I think the enemy overestimated the time it took to replenish our carriers and get them into range again to strike at Marcus. That's the advantage of the situation now, we are close to our main bases and the enemy has to move all the way to Pearl which is the next major naval base.

But even with these losses, he can bring just more and more and more.[8|]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Nov 21, 44

Four days later and KB has arrived where it was planned to go two weeks ago before Allied shipping showed up in numbers at Marcus Island which provided us with the chance to strike. The carrier groups were able to avoid all enemy subs and 2/3 of the IJN has taken position West of the Marshalls to strike Roi-Namur. People might wonder why striking Roi-Namur in late 44 with a carrier force being three times as big as the one that has hit Pearl Harbour in 41. Well, the screenshot might answer this even though we are not after all those small oilers but the subs being based there.

After taking Kwajalein and Roi-Namur and failing at Wotje and Maleolap the enemy has still turned Roi-Namur into his main USN sub base. It's a known strategy for Allied players to get the subs closer to the front as the way to Pearl is a long one but doing this without having secured all of the Marshalls is quite risky (or overconfident) as a level 4 airfield at Kwajalein and a level 1 airfield at Roi-Namur is definately not enough to keep the IJN from attacking the base.

The plan is to unleash two heavy cruiser groups against Roi-Namur, clear the spotted PT boat squadron and bombard the base. At the same time KB will move to a position four hexes NW of the atoll and launch 500 bombers escorted by 300 Sams to bomb the anchorage. Roi-Namur is only a small atoll with a stacking limit of 6000 and while it's overstacked I don't expect to face a lot of flak and the cruisers should suppress it anyways. Roi-Namur also doesn't have that many fighters (two Corsair squadrons were identified in the past) so that leaves CAP from Kwajalein which will most likely leak over, consisting of P-47 and Mustangs last time we attacked there.

According to recon there are nearly a hundred ships anchored at Roi-Namur and we expect up to two dozen subs being there. Enemy naval search has picked up our cruisers but I doubt the enemy is aware of what is planned, worst would be seeing the anchorage being empty tomorrow and two dozen enemy subs flooding the area KB is moving into.

Will post a screenshot from my next turn, but it won't be spectacular at all. IIRC I don't even have a double ace, best pilot with 9 kills and he was KIA. When it comes down to aces it's most likely the worst PBEM I've played so far but if you have 850 fighters on your carriers each one gets fewer kills than if you have only 300 [:D]

the bigger task force comes in for it's bombardment and again the anchorage is pretty much left alone with more damage to the airfield... so we have a 6000 stacking atoll, 15,000 troops according to recon (so around 7-8000 on the atoll), surely not the level 6 forts we had and now look what this number of ships can do with a full load of ordnance fired against the atoll... compare this to the stupid effects of the LCI (G) with their firework rockets and then try to make a sane comment that due to a different and totally idiotic routine this would be all realistic... while the LCI (G) completely whiped out the garrison, our two cruiser task forces with all those DDs firing thousands of shells, times more ordnance than those LCI (G) weren't even able to destroy a SINGLE gun in those two bombardments...

it's not that these two bombardments are utter broken, but the LCI (G) effects surely are and when I think about them again (soon to see again for sure) I can only deny the yay sayers any remaining sane sense or knowledge about WWII, intelligence aside...

a different routine, what a totally silly explanation for a silly outcome... the routine is different for sure, but that doesn't make it work correctly nor realisticly nor is it bringing up a near sane result...

and here's KB's strike against the anchorage... what is near impossible to achieve against even huge convoys with hundreds of spotted ships in range perfectly works in a port strike, 100% of the available bombers launch for the attack... the CAP is leaking over from Kwajalein, the ordered sweep of the IJAAF with Franks is of course later to show up, could as well not order these at all... we have a big escort in a perfectly coordinated strike from two carrier groups with about 1,100 aircraft and the Sams perform very well against the enemy fighters as they had the never ending dive against both Thunderbolt squadrons but were hit by the dive from the Mustangs... while the Sams tore through the Thuds, the Mustangs shot up the Sams in return... the dive, fixed!

none of the CAP fighters got through to the bombers and the dive bombing began hitting the anchorage at Roi-Namur... I really wondered and got a little upset during the replay as it felt like every second dive bombing run was against a crappy YO, all of them were fuel loaden and are a kill after being set afire with the first bomb... the main target and reason of this attack, the USN sub fleet, wasn't hit as hard as expected as we sink "only" eight subs in this strike... most likely weren't as many at Roi-Namur as expected but what really surprised me was the number of ARD, not only the smaller ones that are perfeclt suited to repair subs or smaller ships but also ARD ABSD-2 which is a 50,000 ton dry dock... the bomb hits probably weren't enough to sink it but the damage will be most likely enough to put it out of action with no hopes to get it repaired at Roi-Namur... don't know if a damaged ARD still works in the game though...

like I've said before, this is my kind of late '44 Pearl Harbour strike and while I expected to sink twice as many subs I still consider it a success... only the Sams suffered a little and we will lose a DD due to the collision so if nothing serious is going to happen I'm okay with the outcome of the operation...

with a full Corsair squadron being destroyed on the ground at Roi-Namur's airfield we pretty much get a 1:1 in air losses today which is perfectly fine... two dozen Sams were lost with not even a dozen pilots KIA/WIA and all bomber losses were ops and literally no crews lost... only damage to the bombers was due to balloons over the anchorage, flak fire was minimal which was surprising... flak from the units at the base was suppressed from the cruiser bombardments but I expected that number of ships at the anchorage to contribute more...

after yesterday's strike against Roi-Namur we have ordered the carriers to retire West and I f*cked up... one carrier group had all bombers back to nav strike and ASW but the other carrier group had only one bomber group's orders changed witht he rest being still on port strike... me f*cking up orders and the carriers refueling some escorts meant that instead of being out of range the Graces were still in range of Roi-Namur but there were no escorts and 64 bombers fly into their doom... amazingly enough 52 of the fast bombers were able to get through CAP which was absolutely surprising and I thought we would get away with it but there just had to be also attacks from the CAP after the bombers had released their bombs, resulting in no less than 41 Graces lost today including a big number of experienced bomber crews... this leaves the whole operation in a different light now, not as much a success as the day before even though as with SS Croaker we get a 9th sub today that wasn't hit yesterday...

we had constant sinking sounds the following days so I expect dozens of enemy ships being sunk at Roi-Namur, perhaps we even get the 50,000 ton ARD...

usually I check orders for my carrier groups two, three and sometimes even four times during a turn BEFORE an attack, in this case I must have been too careless the next turn as one carrier group didn't have the orders they should have...

I was thinking about staying a second day and bomb the anchorage again to bag everything that was still afloat but I decided to retire with the carriers as there were at least halve a dozen subs in range to engage our carriers... opting for a second port strike would most likely not have resulted in these bomber losses as we would have had all escorts available then and we would have knocked out everything that was still afloat at Roi-Namur... but it would have put our carriers at risk of sub attacks... in the end, probably a wrong decision... I should have just not f*cked up orders, my fault... [8|]

Hello just out of curiosity who are your highest scoring pilots and the amount of planes they have shot down sorry if its been posted already

Will post a screenshot from my next turn, but it won't be spectacular at all. IIRC I don't even have a double ace, best pilot with 9 kills and he was KIA. When it comes down to aces it's most likely the worst PBEM I've played so far but if you have 850 fighters on your carriers each one gets fewer kills than if you have only 300 [:D]
