No significant rain in the foreseeable future for this area. They said they are looking at a two week firefighting campaign. Having said that it looks like they are on top of things at the moment with no inhabited areas currently under threat so with a bit of luck it will stay that way.

We are the designated relief center for the area and the local show grounds are full of campers and caravans. Hopefully they will have somewhere to go back to afterwards.....

Oh Good Grief.......

I was planning to travel to Queensland this week as my father has been ill and what do I see on the news, ex-tropical cyclone Oswald is off the east Australian coast generating mini-tornados and extensive flooding in my home town. My family are all OK but apparently the garden took a thrashing.... It will probably be over (maybe) by the time I head up the later in the week but if experiences in the past are any indication the road network will have taken a beating.

Edit: If you see the roof off my uncles shed, please let him know as it has gone and there is no sign of it anywhere..... [X(]

Australia is certainly a land of extremes.... One minute you're dodging bushfires and the next you are dodging floods!! [:(] Looks like it will be be a fun trip across New South Wales...

Hopefully it will help the bushfire situation down here in the southern states. For your info the weather change that came through this week was milder than expected and the fire authorities successfully contained the fire within the containment lines and no more damage was done though the fire is still burning in the mountains. The final cost was 21 homes destroyed and one life lost but it could have been far, far worse without the efforts of the firefighters. Flood is devastating but nothing is as frightening as a big fire!!

I was talking to a local dairy farmer last night and he said the fire passed down his boundary fence but didn't come onto his property so he was fortunate that he didn't lose any stock or property. However, the electricity infrastructure was burnt out and it was three days before the they could bring in a diesel generator to power the dairy and milk the herd. They said the poor animals were fit to explode and they will probably have veterinary issues for a while.

Goodness, isn't life interesting!!!

This photo was taken earlier today where Bundaberg is undergoing the worst flooding ever recorded (WITP link - the previous record was 8.92m in 1942) and it isn't finished yet!! It isn't expected to peak until 10AM tomorrow at up another 0.8m to 10.0m. They had to helicopter evacuate the northern part of town as it went under today and the hospital patients are currently being evacuated to Brisbane.

I own a house 3 blocks off the bottom the photo below and no one can tell me if it has been flooded as they can't get over to the other side of town. [:(] And here I was saying everything will be fine as floods never reach that part of town!! [:@]

On the plus side everyone in the family is fine though my brother who is an emergency worker had to be choppered back to town after he got cutoff by flood waters yesterday.

This will probably all be over by the end of the week but the cleanup will undoubtedly take much longer.... [:(]

Hey, gosh and golly, the Eastern Euro folks among us might like this one. People in the Western world might like it too. A nice honest to gosh classic german cheesecake. None of that New York flavored cream cheese crap.

Ingredients:
For the Crust:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
A pinch of salt
2 teaspoons vanilla-sugar
1 tablespoon finely grated lemon rind
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 stick (7 tbsp/3 1/2 oz/100g) butter

For the Filling:
3 egg yolks
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla-sugar
3/4 stick (7 tbsp/3 1/2 oz/100g) butter, very soft and at room temperature
6 oz. heavy cream
17 oz. (500g) Quark - A light yogurt type cream cheese* (see note below for Quark substitutions, if needed) [frankly, I used Farmer's cheese, and it was good].
1 1/2 tbsp. cornstarch
3 egg whites
Pinch of salt

Instructions:
For the Crust:
Sift the flour, stir in the baking powder, salt, vanilla-sugar, lemon peel and sugar, then rub in the butter and knead to a smooth consistency with the egg. Place dough in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 C). You will need a 9 or 9 1/2-inch springform pan.

Roll out the dough on a well-floured work surface, then form it into a ball again and roll it out a second time. (This dough is the worst behaved of any I have ever had to deal with, but the double rolling helps tame it, and the end result IS worth the hassle). Place dough in bottom of a 9 or 9 1/2-inch springform pan, pressing it up the sides almost to the top. Set aside.

For the Filling:
Beat the egg yolks with the sugar and vanilla-sugar until pale and foamy. Add the softened butter and beat well, then add the heavy cream and beat again. Add the quark and stir until the mixture is smooth and throughly combined.

Whisk the egg whites with the salt until very stiff, then very gently fold in the quark mixture, also adding the sifted cornstarch a little at a time. Pour the filling into the crust shell and gently wobble the pan back and forth until the surface is smooth. Trim the dough, leaving about 1 inch (2 1/2 cm). Bake in preheated 300 degrees F (150 C) oven for 50 to 60 minutes (longer if necessary) until well risen and golden - it resembles a souffle at this point (It will sink in the middle quite dramatically - don't worry, it's supposed to do this). Turn the oven off, and let the cheesecake rest in the oven for 15 minutes; then remove it from the oven, cool for an hour or so at room temperature, and refrigerate for several hours before releasing sides of pan and serving. (I make mine the day before I need it). This cheesecake is very nice served with sliced strawberries, or a raspberry sauce. Keep cheesecake stored in the refrigerator, covered.

Ah, thank you! So a bunch of guys in the neighborhood got together for a game of football...and ended up beating one of the top teams in the country.

So does this mean that Bradford goes up to the top league now? And how did they end up playing each other anyway? Theoretically is sounds like a far gone conclusion.

I wouldn't call Villa a top team. [:D] It's just how the cup competitions work over here. They pit teams from different leagues against each other so it's not unusual to see lower level teams playing against Premier League sides. The cups are completely independent of the league competitions, success in a cup has no bearing on a team's position in the league.

I'm not sure how things work over there and whether you have separate cup competitions? It's my understanding that a professional sporting competition has one league (MLS, NBA etc) and that's your lot? As I understand it, your leagues are split along roughly geographical lines but to all intents and purposes the MLS Eastern and Western divisions are, by design, effectively on an equal footing. I assume things are the same for hockey, basketball and rugby with pads as well?

Wish I had time for an AAR on Guadalcanal, but when Chickenboy comes back there is the campaign and it AAR to do. So when you add that up, with real-life thrown in, there is not enough time. [:(]

We also have several lower tier leagues in baseball and basketball, but -AFIK- only in soccer do we have an Open Cup where teams from the various leagues sqare off against each other. The Seattle Sounders won the open cup three years running, but were dethroned by Kansas City this past August.

I'm right in thinking that your leagues are not all part of the same structure though? The teams finishing bottom of the MLS conferences are still playing in the MLS the season after and the lower tier teams stay where they are even if they win their league?

Latest update: Looks like the water isn't rising any more though I don't think it quite made it to 10m. Now comes the wait for the water to recede and the hard work of recovery.....

I found a webcam about 500m down the road and there is no sign of water so it looks like my house is OK.
That was quite a shock finding that picture yesterday as it has NEVER flooded in that area before....

I was talking to my brother this afternoon and it appears that the water is so high now that the flood current is no longer restricted to the river course and is cutting cross country sweeping all before it. At least one house in the North Bundaberg has floated off its stumps and has been swept away. It appears that the evacuation yesterday was a very wise decision by the authorities.

There isn't a major highway in South East Queensland open at the moment end even when the water recedes the damage to the roads will be horrendous. I grew up in the district and have seen this many times when I was a kid so I have no illusions as to what it will be like. It looks like my trip to visit dear ol' Dad is off for the moment even if he is a bit ill. I'll try again in a couple of weeks when the road gangs have had a chance to put temporary repairs in place (and its still going to be be pretty rough...)

The other issue is that Bundaberg with a population of 60,000 is currently supporting 7,000 evacuees. Accommodation will be at a major premium and a lot of the family have taken someone in. The state manager of a major grocery chain came on the radio this afternoon and after a major recovery effort said they only have two branches still closed and guess where they are... I think it might be better not to impose on anyone until they have had a chance to recover a bit.
