Be careful at Tarawa. It is not as isolated as Baker so you could potentially see the Japanese intervene here. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Japanese start bringing in reinforcements by air. Get ready for a local IJN counterattack in the Gilberts.

29 April 1944
Regarding my damaged ships at Tarawa. LCI-725 wasn't the only one damaged, but is the worst off.
These weren't obvious, and I really had to dig to find them. Something to keep in mine with atolls, I think -- especially with these smaller landing ships. The rest of the amphib ships will retire to Tabiteuea once the remaining 7,000 supply are unloaded. I want to yank the troops out when it's done.
My armor pathfinders reach Patna. and get good odds crossing the river. I'll do a standard attack next turn and then sit tight until the infantry arrive. They're probably five days out yet. A West African division plus artillery and such.
I notice troops at Vizagapatnam are moving east. I may be shaking things up with my action in the north. Once Patna falls, I'll have recovered a good bit of light industry and resources. Anything to help the supply situation.

My subs have been busy again.
That's not counting the couple others that missed.
His subs have had a rougher time. A couple of them decided to tangle with my carrier group one hex off Tarawa.
According to the sound effects, it looks like both are down.
I'm pulling the carriers out of there now. It doesn't look like IJN carriers will be showing up and the CVEs with the landing ships should be able to fend off any unescorted raids from the Marshalls. I doubt the Georges can reach that far. I've sighted a cruiser force about 4 hexes SE of Ebon heading east. I'm going to route my CVs north for a possible shot at them before proceeding on to Pearl.
Last turn, unescorted IJAAF bombers hit my guys at Patna. I put up a LRCAP from Benares of Spitfires, but in return, had to deal with sweeps on Benares itself. The Spits haven't dealt with them very well. I've moved in a bunch of my better fighters to Benares now at a high altitude CAP. I can support 200 planes there now. A bunch of B-25s will also raid his troops at Patna.
Since there's nothing guarding Rangoon yet, I've sent the 29s in again.
I forgot to look, but I'm guessing about 3/4 of the refineries there are toast. Sorta linked with this is that the 20th USAAF and the XX Bomber Command have arrived at Cape Town. The former is headed to Karachi while the latter is off to Colombo, and from there to Trincomalee. The 29s are attached to the XX BC, so I'm hoping their presence will give their readiness a boost.

I worked over Rangoon again. About 3/4 of the refineries are wrecked.
I also dispatched a bunch of B-25s to Patna. I would have bet anything that CF had LRCAPped that base, but the skies were open.
I did a job on them. Everyone's stood down now. I've learned never to repeat anything in this game. I've already pushed my luck with the 29s on Rangoon, but I guess the refineries don't concern him that much. He must be content to ship oil if need be.
The 82nd West African Division and an AT unit also reached Patna this turn and they'll be attacking. I think this will be short and sweet, as the armor alone could handle them before. More troops are about half way to Ranchi, so with luck, I'll grab that quickly too. We'll see if he counterattacks north again after cleaning up Calcutta.
Speaking of...
I suffered an attack there and he managed 3-1 odds on me. However he still took serious lumps doing it. Things like this will always keep the ground war a mystery to me.
My fleet carriers came within two hexes of Mili in the Marshalls. Nobody flew on either side due to the weather. That's fine. I've upped the CAP to 70% and they're off to Pearl. If they have a go at me, they'll probably pay for it. Four CVs, three CVLs, and New Jersey will be a hard nut to crack.
One more B-29 squadron arrived at Aden. Probably my last one for a few months.

Well it's not as mysterious as you make it out to be. AV just corresponds to the number of assault teams (or vehicles) making an attack. When the adjusted AV ratio gets high enough to get a victory, that really just means the attackers have compromised the defenders position forcing them to fall back into disarray. It has no direct correlation with casualties on either side. A defender with greater firepower than the attackers may inflict significantly more damage than it takes even if the assault odds are is in the attackers favor. Furthermore, the majority of casualties a defender takes in being defeated arises in the retreat (or rout) itself. That is why 9/10 times when the attacker has assault odds in its favor it deals more damage than it takes. However, in this case your units are encircled and thus cannot retreat which is why you aren't suffering as many casualties as you would if you had an escape route.
That being said, I think you need to start ignoring the stated "casualties reported" as measure of how much each side suffered. I would not say the Japanese took "serious lumps". Yes, Japan took 400+ disabled squads but only a few dozen destroyed squads and devices. Those disabled squads will heal with time. I would probably qualify Japanese losses in this battle as being light to moderate.

Patna falls...quickly.
It's a level 7 airbase, so I have a bunch of base forces loading up on the train to get there. My rail network is proving valuable here. It's probably the better part of a week until my forces reach Ranchi.
At Tarawa, since my big carriers pulled out, he got a shot at the amphib force.
Her flt is around 85, so I'm not sure I can get her out or not. The rest are pulling out to Tabiteuea. I don't need to stick around for the last 400 supply on board. B-25s are hitting the troops there while SBDs and TBFs are working on the airfield, going for supply hits and getting some.
Troops at Calcutta getting bombarded yet by land and by sea.
P-61s are in production now. I'll be able to populate one of my new night fighter squadrons within the next 6 weeks or so. Dash-3 Helldivers are also cranking out. I think next month is the dash-5 Hellcat also.

Her flt is around 85, so I'm not sure I can get her out or not. The rest are pulling out to Tabiteuea. I don't need to stick around for the last 400 supply on board. B-25s are hitting the troops there while SBDs and TBFs are working on the airfield, going for supply hits and getting some.

Another attack at Calcutta.
The longer I keep them going there the better. I think I'm three days from Ranchi now. I was underestimating the travel time, but the ground is nice and open. Two days 'til another supply convoy reaches Karachi, with another about four days behind that one. Combined for about 140k. More are off-map coming in, and I'll launch another next turn. Colombo's in the 280k region, so they'll keep for now. I'll probably get another going there in about a week or so. In India, I have a number of bases with the yellow exclamation mark, but none in red, so that's good, at least. Patna might still be red. I upped their demand last turn. I've probably added about 50-60 light industry and resources taking these.
I haven't re-spawned killed units in a long time. I seem to recall the wait time being not very long, so I hope this is the case with the Calcutta group.
I'm launching a bombardment mission to Vizagapatnam to wear down some of the airpower there. About 6-7 USN CLs with a bunch of destroyers. As per Ed doctrine, everybody bombards. All the way to the beach if need be.

I'm pulling the carriers out of there now. It doesn't look like IJN carriers will be showing up and the CVEs with the landing ships should be able to fend off any unescorted raids from the Marshalls. I doubt the Georges can reach that far. I've sighted a cruiser force about 4 hexes SE of Ebon heading east. I'm going to route my CVs north for a possible shot at them before proceeding on to Pearl.

Don't be so quick to rule out the possibility of escorted LBA! You need more CAP from CVEs to stop these sorts of attacks. As it is 17/18 Betties managed to drop their torpedoes. Better bring more CVEs for this sort of landing in the future.

Yep...figured that out. I have plenty to throw around at this point. Two more came in over the last week. His escorts had a pretty good reach, which I hadn't planned for. I thought he was topped out at 9 hexes, but maybe tanks weren't accounted for. Some of his bases in the Marshalls don't appear to have fighters present, so I'll start poking them a bit.
One more fleet carrier should arrive within a month. That and all the ones from India are enroute also.
Almost all the assault transports are now bound for Cape Town. I've kept the APAs separate as they have a 16 kt top speed. the LSTs and AKA are on their own. When the time comes, I can probably land on four islands in the Marshalls at once. Amphibious HQs will supervise also. If/when I take them, more options should open up after that.

A Zeke with drop tanks can make 14 hexes one way and then back to base. At that range their loiter time would be nil and the pilots would be highly fatigued.

Love the idea of simultaneous landings! Though 4 simultaneous landings might spread you too thinly. Personally I would probably choose only 2 since you already have positions in the Gilberts that can support operations in the Marshalls. Probably time to start thinking about other amphibious operations in the Pacific such as the Solomon Islands.ORIGINAL: Mundy

He's got lots of air in the area, so I'd like to be thorough. I'd like to have overkill with troops so I don't end up with drawn out affair like with Tarawa right now. If I have to downgrade to three, I have to strike a balance between the two main islands and the eastern ones.
I haven't looked at what's in the pipe for LCUs, but I'd like more yet.

I had to deal with this a day ago.
I was just reaching parity with his forces at that point. Now he has a 168-135 advantage again. On top of that, I'm dedicating some late model B-25s to naval attack to try to catch any others. I'm perturbed I didn't see any warning of this, despite all the search planes I have out.
I'll be returning the favor at Vizagapatnam in a few days. My cruiser force is trying to set itself up for that. There's little to no Japanese naval search in the Indian Ocean, as they're still unseen.
I did a massive bombing of Ranchi with 24s and 25s, but they had to fight through Franks and thunderstorms, so little was accomplished. Sweeps start next turn. My troops took a shot.
I've got another division and regiment enroute, so when they arrive, it should push this over the top. They arrived late, so couldn't accompany this group. I probably should have held up until they arrived. If I take Ranchi, I'll be content with these for the time being. I can probably inch my way east up in the north, maybe cutting off the Kohima area.
I dealt with this near Woodlark Is.
I'm not sure if they're going to Gili Gili (Milne) or Moresby. More search is up in Australia and strike planes are ready if they come all the way over.
I've also been catching transports lately heading to the Kuriles area.

That IJA unit I kicked out of Patna has been sitting in the hex to the SW. My division there just arrived and will kick them back further.
Troops at Benares have finally left the hex, bound for Ranchi. I've been sweeping there.
I'm back to parity at Tarawa. Starvation and keeping supplies rolling in for my side should eventually turn this, like it did at Baker.

CF is going to try to draw out the Tarawa campaign as long as possible. Do you have LBA bombers in the area? Some B-25s or Venturas would be pretty useful right here.

I have two or three squadrons of B-25s at Tabiteuea and they've been bombing Tarawa for the last several days, along with SBDs. I've kept one in reserve for naval attack after his last bombardment, but I may throw them in too.

I left a little gift for CF.
This is probably the third ship up there that's hit my mines. I've been using the RN subs for this mission, as they still have mines in the pool whereas the USN has long been out. I'm starting to seed the shallows just south of Diamond Harbor.
I've landed a USMC defense battalion and some artillery at Tarawa. CF took a shot at my CVEs form the Marshalls with escorted Betties. I was able to beat them off with CVE CAP. A bunch of fighters from Makin will LRCAP next turn to be sure. In addition to the troops landed, another 8,000 of supply will also unload, which helps a lot. An Omaha plus some destroyers killed a bunch of troops with their bombardment, about 250 casualties, split pretty evenly between fighting and support troops.
Ranchi's getting weak in the air. I've got fresh squadrons sweeping next turn, plus a bunch of bombers will strike. I had everyone tasked for Vizagapatnam last turn, but nobody flew. I'll stick to the weak spot.
CF must be thinking ahead, as a bunch of flak is enroute to Saipan, according to intel.
My two remaining CVLs at Colombo are repaired and enroute for Pearl, via Cape Town.
I've moved a bunch of fighter, RAF Mosquitos, A-20s and a CAF B-25 squadron to Patna, as all the needed support have arrived. My division to the south drove off the remnants of his troops from the neighboring hex and are heading back to Patna. A-20s will work on them for awhile. The Chinese will bomb Kohima to see what's there. Two squadrons of recon Lightnings are also there, set at commander's discretion to watch for approaching troops. Once I get troops settled in and secure, I'd like to move east to cut off Kohima and Imphal from supply, killing that part of the map. I've converted one squadron at Delhi from Hurricanes to P-47s, but the pool isn't big enough yet to fill them out. Supply is on the low edge of acceptable in India. About 300k more is enroute waiting to show up on-map. Once my current convoy for Colombo ships off, I'll probably load another for Karachi. I'm trying to keep a conveyor belt going. xAKs from the states have been trickling in. I have lots and lots of ships dedicated to this route now. I'm hoping to grab Addu within a few weeks.

CF put up about 70 Georges at Ranchi, and of course, my bombers went in with no sweeps. They actually fought through pretty good with minimal losses, delivering their bombs, but overall, it's' probably 15% damaged.
There appears to be no CAP at Magwe, so the 29s are going in again. To be safe, I'm sending them at 30,000'. I can judge their effectiveness at this altitude while I'm at it.
I caught another transport new Iwo Jima. Unfortunately, no troops on board.
