Is it just me or do those hexagonal gun positions seem like great target indicators? They just pop right out to the eye, don't they? Real accommodating of the designers to set them apart from the other architecture that way.
They are distinctive, I suspect that the form is designed to minimize weaknesses in the reinforced concrete, they are probably several feet thick - medieval almost but great protection from most naval ordinance these days.

Good point. The 'shoot-me!' factor on them is high, too, which makes one wonder if there's some sort of deception involved with them. Then again, when you're working with fortifications build on pilings I guess you need every advantage you can get!

Nice video. Shows for the first time YJ-83K carried by J-15s engaging a target ship.
Also, looks like the PLANAF allows their pilots to "customize" their helmets now.[:)]

The Missile Defense Agency and Navy continued testing the versatility of the SM-6 missile with a salvo of two missiles fired at a ballistic missile target in the “terminal” or final phase of flight early this morning off Hawaii.
The Pearl Harbor destroyer USS John Paul Jones fired the defensive missiles after a target missile was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai just after midnight.

I'm working on a SCS Spratly Island Scenario titled "Great Wall of Sand".
Appreciate the comments on the new island defenses. Do people think it's likely or at least possible that there are or could be missile CIWS such as HQ-10 as part of the structures?

Yes, he really is like ha MiG-29K, but there is no landing hook, and an infrared detection system (near the main landing gear).

U.S. Navy Announces Need for 355-ship with More CVN, DDG, SSN, Amphibs & Auxiliary Vessels
The U.S. Secretary of the Navy announced the results of the 2016 Force Structure Assessment (FSA), a year-long effort which began in January that was conducted to evaluate long-term defense security requirements for future naval forces today at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
The new fleet goal calls for 1 more aircraft carrier, 16 more large surface combatant, 18 more attack submarines, 4 more amphibious warfare ships, 3 more expeditionary support bases and 5 more support ships. The number of LCS (including the Frigate variant) and aircraft appears to remain unchanged (despite calls in the US Navy to reduce the number of LCS and procure more Super Hornet fighters).
The 2016 FSA recommends a 355-ship fleet including 12 carriers, 104 large surface combatants, 52 small surface combatants, 38 amphibious ships, and 66 submarines. The assessment will be one input to the Navy's FY-2018 30-year shipbuilding plan. The current proposed Navy budget is seen as a bridge to this larger Navy, with shipbuilding on an upward glide slope towards 308 ships.

Kinda a funfact;
it seems that the "SHOOT IT" and "Shoot Them!!" helmet writing on those J-15 drivers are a homage to the VFA-27 video "Shoot 'Em If You Got 'Em" released in 2014.

It seems that the PLAN has watched this video and widely circulated it amongs its pilots and carrier-personell, making it kinda a "goal to be strived for" for the fledgeling PLAN Carrier Aviators. This is in line with the notion that the PLAN Carrier Programme uses the USN experience as benchmark and example for its efforts.

ESG likely to be based in Darwin as well. Definitely makes sense for US foreign policy and maybe AU's too depending on how they view Chinese aggression[;)]
