Here I am in Oct 05 at Holly Beach, LA, shortly after Hurricane Rita (the one right after Katrina) had levelled the place. It's (or rather, it was) a small beach town on the coast of SW Louisiana. Not a wall was left standing.

Hey! (Ok, ...sorry Sir), I still have an original issue of those 'camies' from 1981 hanging in my closet![:)]
Almost 30 years ago we traded in our O.D. Greens ...for those.
The funny thing was, everyone wanted the new woodland pattern camos - but after a couple years, the old OD's were more desireable because they were 'salty' (you know what I mean).

Carry On! (now that I'm a civi' I don't have to worry [:D])

I have a bunch of them hanging in the closet gathering dust. Now we're on to the digital uniforms. They don't work at all in the woods. You look like a grey, digital, ambulatory blob. [8|]
I just hit 20 years. Not sure how much longer I'll stay in. I really want to grow a beard. [:D]

Well Sir, (Oakleafe---is that a Major or a light Colonel? I forgot now) 20 years? Shoot, if I went to OCS when offered I'd have 29 years now.
Anyway a friend of mine from High School just retired - and did just that...the beard! Hey, he looks like old St Nick now...so don't do it![:D] Stay young!

[:D] My wife likes beards. I'm a Major, promotable. I need a civilian job before I get out. I may stay in for a few more years though. I was offered a job teaching military history, part time, for the reserves. I'd get promoted to LTC. Hard to turn down. That would be fun. A good chunk of it is discussing the Guadalcanal campaign. Geez, get paid to blab about something I'd do for free. [:D]

Mike,
Getting out is more difficult than most acknowledge. It takes a while to mentally hang up the pickle suit.
If you can get a teaching job in uniform, take it. That would be a nice transitional job.
Regards,
Feltan
P.S. If I had stayed in, I would be over 25 now. Hard to believe!

Carry on Sir! You can't see me - but believe me - it was a crisp proper salute![:)]
Man, if I could get paid for that - I WOULD ![:D]
Anyway, now that we are in different worlds - good luck Mike(Sir!).

Yeah, it does sound great. The only down side is the possibility of deploying somewhere. I've been away from home about 5 of the last 20 years...... and that's being in the Guard. I can't imagine being active for 20 years. Those guys amaze me. I don't mind deployment, it's being away from home for a year or more at a time that sucks. I miss so much (as you guys know, I'm sure).
Enough of this. Back to the pics........

Hey, One last thing for you guys to think about - if it wasn't for the bellyaching yardbirds like me - you wouldn't have had the troops to go out there and do what needed to be done...1980 or 2008. Not that I'm anything (which I'm not) but I know there must have been more guys like me who followed...there always are...

I don't post here much, but I'm stoked about the upcoming AE release.
Here's me and my two hellions and the father-in-law....
(My oldest one, the one huggin' me, just loves watching me play wargames and also offers plenty of free tactical advice.)

Just looked, that picture is from 1999. I have a bit more gray now and about 15 pounds heavier, but not much different. I'm fortunate that both sides of my family age slowly. My mother is 83 and her hair is still salt and pepper. She really didn't start to age much until about 5 years ago. My father is 88 and most people figure he's in his 60s.
My SO is the real winner of the youth looking sweepstakes. She's older than I am (by how much is classified), but most people think she's somewhat younger. She's finds it funny when people 10 years younger than her tell her, "when you get to be my age..."

Major:
The transition to civy life is a tough one. However, it beats the heck out of missing family milestones again.
Your family has given much and they deserve to have you around 24-7 Sir. Not sure about you, but when I retired my children were 8, 10 and 12 and I missed my first one being born, my second ones first words and my thirds first steps - not to mention all the other things I missed.
Serving this great country was an honor and a privilage...but it was time for me to replace service to country with service to family.
Very Respectfully,
Whipple

This one was taken just last weekend. I had to show off my new jersey for you guys...
I'm just a couple of months shy of 50, and definitely not as spry as I once was!
