this maybe should be moved to it's own thread, as it may take over this one..... but, Attacking Malta had been the origional plan. Panzerarmy Africa was supposed to halt afer Torbruk fell, and the assault to take place in early July (I think).  I know the Germans had deployed a para Div for the operation. Pushing for permission to chase the 8th army is probably one of the few major mistakes Rommell made in his campaign

it was the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions and Bittrich commanded the Corps HQ controlling those two Divisions. Off hand I think it was the II SS Panzer Corps but I could be wrong.

I'll agree with John 3rd. In the 'movie' they show Bittrich's HQ as the 1st para are jumping into Arnhem when he quotes this. Whether it is correct to the book or a fabrication, I am pretty sure it is Bittrich. He commands the panzer division sent to Arnhem to rest and repair (10th 11th or 12th Panzer - I can't remember that).

I just watched Kelly's Heroes and I gotta admit, if you haven't seen this classic comedy war movie its worth watching. I always loved war movies with a comedy twist, but this movie takes the cake being authentic and a classic comedy.

I taught my kid to say that (he's 2). His teacher wasn't thrilled.

"Excuse me while I whip this out!" Movie is a classic. Madeline Kahn was the funniest woman ever IMHO.

I was thinking mostly of the scene where Cleavon Little as the sheriff takes himself hostage ending with him saying "O baby, you are so talented and they are so dumb". [:D] Great film. One of Mel Brooks great films. In terms of war films I have to say the end of Gallipoli was very poignant.

Bittrich commanded the II SS Panzer Corps (consisting of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions). The movie turned his command into a single Panzer Division.

Braveheart. When Mel Gibson and another warrior are squating down behind shields facing the English battle line.
The guy next to Gibson looks over and says, " The Good Lord says I'm going to make it , but he's pretty sure that you're focked".

Another from Braveheart I like is where Longshanks orders his archers to engage and the squire says something to the effect of, "But, sire, won't we hit our own men?" And Longshanks replies, "Yes, but we'll hit theirs as well."

A few from "12 O'Clock High" that I like. I'm recalling from memory so may not be exact but the 3 scenes I like best are:

1. In the opening credits Harvey Stovall pedals out to the deserted Abercrombe airfield and begins to remember as he walks the runway. You hear the engines of a B-17 startup and then the grass begins to bend from the propwash. Classic!

2. The general is riding in his car to Abercrombe to take over and just before he gets to the gate, he tells his driver to pull over. The driver opens the general's door. The general gets out and casually says, "Cigarette, Ernie?" They light up and take a few puffs then you see the general visibily shift mental gears for the distatseful task ahead. He throws his cigarette on the ground and turns to his driver and says, "Alright, sargeant!"

3. The group has just completed its first raid into Germany and the general sees the chaplain and Major Stoval sneaking back to the barracks from one of the bombers. He stops them and first reads the chaplain the riot act and then dismisses him. The general then turns to Major Stoval and makes a comment about having to write that letter to the major's wife if the major were killed. He then relents a bit and asks Stoval if he hit anything. Stoval replies, "I don't know, general, my glasses were fogging up but I think I got a piece of one." The general replies, "Ours or theirs!?"

So many good lines in that movie.

In The Professionals, near the end of the movie, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan and Woody Strode are waiting for a pickup at a train "station." (With the stunning Claudia Cardinale as their prisoner). They are there because Burt Lancaster has been left to hold a pass aginst the Mexicans. In the distance there appears a swirling dust cloud and I believe it is Strode that asks what it is, a whirling dervish? After checking it out with a pair of binoculars, Marivn snaps them off from around his neck and utters, "That, gentlemen, is the whirlingest dervish of them all."

Of course, it is Lancaster coming in safe and sound.


Another great scence is the final shoot 'em up in The Wild Bunch.

Or what about the scene where the boss (General Pritchard played by Mitchell Millard) for General Savage chews him out (for not turning back) so that the 918th is the only bomber group to make it to and hit the target?

I always liked the scene in Ruthless People where the guy in the clown suit asks "Do I look that stupid?"
 
And Judge Reinhold emphatically answers, "Yes, you do!!"  Classic.

This is in response to Borners BRIDGE TOO FAR film queery----2nd SS Panzer Corps ( 9th HOHENSTAUFEN and 10th FRUNDSBERG SS Pnz Divs) who were refitting in the Arnhem area. Bittrich was in command of this unit.

Movie was Major Dundee. Charlton Heston not John Wayne. They were chasing an Apache warrior whose name i forget. Senta BErger was amazing as the eye candy. Movie was based on the diary of the bugler in the cavalry unit. Recurring line of the movie?" Till the enemy is taken or killed." After the Apache was taken Dundee and Harris's character were to fight a duel to the death. Not a bad way to spend a few hours.

I am surprised nobody mentioned the love for Napalm in the morning! Or even better the Ride to Valkyries from Apocalypse Now!
