Bump...(I didn't read anything, just bumping this to the top of the list for Cap's update)

Chickenboy sent word that he had conceded the match based on a declining chance to close the net point deficit.

We both had large point advantages as Allied player but this was a mirror game, of course, so it it the net points that matter.

As Allied, I went for Pagan first, without changing the prep target. The Pagan garrison is small, however, so even with the disruption, the attack succeeded. Pagan was useful as a base for LBA.

I made the mistake of attacking Truk with carrier air. A JJ counterattack got through and put one of my carriers out of commission and mos tof the air complement had to ditch.

The second landing was at Guam, which went well but it took a week of attacks to defeat the garrison. The third landing was Saipan which has evil naval guns which I never completely suppressed. I took to landing supplies by LCT and just taking the casualties in lost LCT's. Saipan did fall, which was the game winner.

My Tinian attack was 2 d out when we called it.

With me as IJN..thing went poorly at the start. Zuiho got torpedoed by a sub. Chickenboy landed first at Guam. His D-Day force was small so I ortdered a shock counterattack on Day 2 but, by then, he had a large force ashore and my attack was crushed ..losing 1/3 killed. The garrison did not last long after that. He then went for Tinian, which he captured quickly. The Saipan garrison was the strongest and well protected with naval guns, holding out till the end. I had flown in some troops from Pagan to bolster the garrison and the forts were up to level 4 or 5 as I recall.

My only real naval success as IJN was a raid by 3 DD's at night on Guam. The swept past a CA and sunk 3 or 4 CVE's with their planes.

I tried an IJN surface raid East of the Marianas but was caught by LBA and had to abort with nothing to show for it.

Neither one of us had any success with IJN carriers or BB's. They were basically point liabilities and I spent most if the time trying to hide them from USN carriers.

I would say, if the Allied player knows how to make proper landings and uses mutually supporting carriers at the start, he will win by a big margin in this scenario.

This tournament started so long ago that the director has lost all track of where we are and where we go next.  Or perhaps this was the championship match?  Anyhow, I do have a prize in mind for the ultimate winner, so let me know if that's you, Cap.  If you need another opponent, I'll have to go back and dig through the archives to find out who's left.
