KB is groping its way through thunderstorms, Westward, hoping to
find USS Lexington in the muck - three days after she sank two tankers.
This escapade saved PH from being attacked again - with a view to sinking
damaged ships under repair there.

Allied cruisers bombarded Kwajalein for the second day in a row, and
wisely left just as a submarine arrived. Presumably they are low on
ammunition. Two other surface TFs to the East of the atol disappeared
- as did USS Enterprise TF (or maybe it is under track - NE of Kwajalein
and SW of Midway??) I think it is Lexington we are tracking - but neither
is reported as a carrier. Still - now we know where to hunt heavy warships -
this is obviously the priority mission.

We got revenge on another of the ships of Asiatic Fleet that hit Sorong a few
days ago - never mind a tricky maneuver to hide Marblehead in a bay. The mini-KB seems to be a good idea. Even its seaplanes got a sinking today. It has six small carriers in 3 flavors - CVL, CVE and CVS. These operate 12 squadrons of aircraft - 3 fighter and 3 bomber - plus five or six flights of seaplanes on cruisers - in a team - including even one night detection scout plane. [RN has a similar capability on its CVL - the Swordfish there have radar - and the British commander believed they could attack at night.]

It is still consolidation time in Malaya and Luzon - strung out units waking into
position for the next round. It is also still mopping up time for the many small vessels that fled South China - but the surface ships are doing more than the air (at least
in bad weather). Weather also saved the cruisers that raided Kwajalein from any air strikes. The airfields are fine - surprisingly so. Bombardment of Wake was very effective - but bombardment by more and heavier ships didn't work on Roi Namur.

AMC have linked up with, and protect the tankers - and provide a different point for
air recon to originate from (with both longer range and higher operational %

I dont recall jap AMC w/search planes....is this new?

It was probably a German idea. One German raider, needing a replacement scout plane,
was given one when refitting in Japan. Nevertheless, it was not popular with IJN. Only the
two "real" raiders had them - the other AMC were not really raiders - but more like escort
ships with 5.5 inch guns - more to protect than to raid. The Hogoku Maru and her sister
Gogoku Maru were unique in more than that. They carried 300 torpedoes between them!
To arm submarines. Almost every one was lost when they were sunk too - a disaster the
IJN never really recovered from. They could dish it out - with guns and torpedoes -
and even could find the enemy - with their scout planes - but they could not stand up to
real punishment.

This last turn I created a montage of all what I think is the more important action.

1. South China sea the IJN has spread out to kill the chinese junks headed to Singers. All this south of Hinan Island.

2. A IJN SCBB TF is now located near singers in an effort to slow the transport action in and out of this port. ElCid now probably has a view to my intentions.

3.The Marblehead ran into something it wished not found near Tenerate. Tried to hide in port but most recent reports indicate she has been sunk.

4. At roi-namur a heavy CA Tf fires a bombard mission into the airfield. oddly Elcid did not turn on the torps so this will be success unless found by what looks to be a retiring KB from the NE.

The Boise hopefully will get away , but time will tell, ElCid is a dangerous opponent.

Note how the damaged Marblehead get behind(NE) the IJN CV TF.

I would love to save the dry dock, maybe someone has a good idea to get it out of the PI.

Around hawaii the fleets are in transition.. I am sure ElCid will try to track my moves. Not sure forward deployment of all my CA will help the BBs at pearl.

The Battle of the Central Pacific continues,
and seems to be turning into The Battle of the North Pacific.

I adopted a trick from Japanese naval theory re carriers:

divide KB into three divisions and spread out, so as to get searches
going from more directions, while remaining within mutual supporting
range

I also used the Advance force per Fleet Submarine doctrine - a doctrine
only IJN still tried to use by the time the Pacific War began. RN had stopped
building fleet subs after just one class, concluding that high speed was not
enough and the concept would not work. USN still called its submarines "fleet
boats" and continued to build them with high speed as well as long range,
but it elected to use them independently - not combined with surface forces.

Whatever force we are chasing Westward across the Pacific - AI now reports it
is but one ship of unidentified type - it is the submarines that have it in view -
and the submarines that are in range to strike it - so many it almost does not matter
what it does? It is likely to be engaged tomorrow. But the TF is still out of range,
and still reported on a NW course - while we are headed due West into it - we could still not engage tomorrow unless it turns directly at us.

This force is not a great concern - we are between it and any possible bases - and submarines are now so numerous around it we are very likely to keep track of it - even if we fail to score on it. Sooner or later it must turn E or SE to get somewhere there might be fuel? It probably cannot go due South - due to the distance and the lack of fuel down there - but also that puts it into the long range land based detection arcs out of the Islands - and we can go after it if needs be - at least if we had fuel.

On the other hand, the tanker TFs in the North Pacific - with aircraft carrying raiders attached - report a TF is dogging them - to their SE - which is NE of KB. This is alarming - it implies he is tracking the main tanker TF (a minor one has "escaped" and will return to Japan to get some engine repairs - it steamed through the last day at full speed - and its leader disobeyed orders and ran for home instead of the tanker force link up point. He reported being sighted by enemy aircraft, and may have been prudent.

It is therefore possible we have both Enterprise group and Lexington Group - or possibly Saratoga group out of San Diego - under track - but not properly identified (except the force to the West DID attack one of the tanker units with carrier planes a few days ago - so that one may well be Lexington as I think it is).

I have decided to find out about this other force chasing the tankers. The tankers will make a radical course change, come to full speed, and run into KB - which in turn will do the same thing - putting the tankers right in between the mini carrier task forces - itself probably effective protection as enemy planes will prefer to fight carriers - covered by fighters. IF he can indeed track the tankers and follow them - he will suck this force right into carrier striking range of the entire KB - which will reveal what it is - and whatever it is - we should sink it. Meanwhile we will let the subs track and engage Lexington group (if that is what it is) and, whatever it does, it should remain a hostage of position - unable to go home because we are between it and home. I feel like Admiral Nelson chasing the French all the way to the Caribbean - and the distance is already similar - and then back again - finally to engage at Trafalgar. But we have the carriers, the fuel, and the planes - and one or both of these forces should be a carrier - so it is worth the hunt.

The fact remains, he is hunting our tankers! Impressive this early in the war, at the odds involved. It does not matter if he does so with cruisers or carriers - I am impressed.

I tried a reinforced (and ununified) division scale attack at Clark - only two infantry regiments available - well supported by artillery and two recon regiments with very light armor - and a HQ - and surprisingly reduced fortifications in spite of the massive number of opposing units. This eats his supplies. I will change tactics tomorrow now we know the details of what he has. We need time for more units to reach the scene, and to undo the demoralization effects of an attack at such poor odds - which were not severe but will become so if the troops are not given a break. We might wait for more troops to arrive - or we might pin this force and take the rest of Central Luzon - returning here in force in a week - after still more troops land. There are 100,000 supplies at San Fernando - we will restore any casualties fast. We took Iba - the unit sent to attack didn't have to - it surrendered to its mere presence - and there is nothing feeding this huge enemy force save Bataan and Clark hexes, and Manila. Manila is not well defended - perhaps we should take it - exploit its supplies and airfields - depriving him of its "food" at the same time???
before reducing this corps size force. Regardless, it will not last anything like the many months of history I predict.

The Boise hopefully will get away , but time will tell, ElCid is a dangerous opponent.

Note how the damaged Marblehead get behind(NE) the IJN CV TF.

Marblehead was trapped and sunk Yesterday - hiding among the arms of the island NW of it -
and we stopped chasing the ships to the South - preferring to go after the Dewey Dry dock instead.
We have one damaged squadron from one of Big Red's fighter traps at Ternate -
and we lack the fuel for a long chase like the Kiddo Butai is engaged in. On the other hand,
the Ni Butai is now supported by a heavy task force - if it runs into cruisers - the cruisers not only face
torpedoes, but what I call "very heavy cruisers" (= BB).

This last turn I created a montage of all what I think is the more important action.

1. South China sea the IJN has spread out to kill the chinese junks headed to Singers. All this south of Hinan Island.

2. A IJN SCBB TF is now located near singers in an effort to slow the transport action in and out of this port. ElCid now probably has a view to my intentions.

3.The Marblehead ran into something it wished not found near Tenerate. Tried to hide in port but most recent reports indicate she has been sunk.

4. At roi-namur a heavy CA Tf fires a bombard mission into the airfield. oddly Elcid did not turn on the torps so this will be success unless found by what looks to be a retiring KB from the NE.

There were plenty of Torps turned on - and two entire Air Flotillas of bombers actually present - but they mostly failed to engage - and those that did missed entirely. Fighters also failed to deliver bombs. I am not happy about the performance of land based air the last two days in this area.

In the South China Sea, I think it was a mistake to run over the top of Borneo - exposed to TFs coming in to INVADE, not hunting minor craft. Had he gone down the East side of the Island, the island would have sheltered the vessels from such attacks. The landing at Miri demonstrates my intentions.

The KB is NOT retiring - it is hunting - and simply not risking engine damage to do so at high speed vs targets that might change course. We have enough assets and a position that means we need not be in a hurry.

The Battle of the Central Pacific continues,
and seems to be turning into The Battle of the North Pacific.

I adopted a trick from Japanese naval theory re carriers:

divide KB into three divisions and spread out, so as to get searches
going from more directions, while remaining within mutual supporting
range

I also used the Advance force per Fleet Submarine doctrine - a doctrine
only IJN still tried to use by the time the Pacific War began. RN had stopped
building fleet subs after just one class, concluding that high speed was not
enough and the concept would not work. USN still called its submarines "fleet
boats" and continued to build them with high speed as well as long range,
but it elected to use them independently - not combined with surface forces.

Whatever force we are chasing Westward across the Pacific - AI now reports it
is but one ship of unidentified type - it is the submarines that have it in view -
and the submarines that are in range to strike it - so many it almost does not matter
what it does? It is likely to be engaged tomorrow. But the TF is still out of range,
and still reported on a NW course - while we are headed due West into it - we could still not engage tomorrow unless it turns directly at us.

This force is not a great concern - we are between it and any possible bases - and submarines are now so numerous around it we are very likely to keep track of it - even if we fail to score on it. Sooner or later it must turn E or SE to get somewhere there might be fuel? It probably cannot go due South - due to the distance and the lack of fuel down there - but also that puts it into the long range land based detection arcs out of the Islands - and we can go after it if needs be - at least if we had fuel.

On the other hand, the tanker TFs in the North Pacific - with aircraft carrying raiders attached - report a TF is dogging them - to their SE - which is NE of KB. This is alarming - it implies he is tracking the main tanker TF (a minor one has "escaped" and will return to Japan to get some engine repairs - it steamed through the last day at full speed - and its leader disobeyed orders and ran for home instead of the tanker force link up point. He reported being sighted by enemy aircraft, and may have been prudent.

It is therefore possible we have both Enterprise group and Lexington Group - or possibly Saratoga group out of San Diego - under track - but not properly identified (except the force to the West DID attack one of the tanker units with carrier planes a few days ago - so that one may well be Lexington as I think it is).

I have decided to find out about this other force chasing the tankers. The tankers will make a radical course change, come to full speed, and run into KB - which in turn will do the same thing - putting the tankers right in between the mini carrier task forces - itself probably effective protection as enemy planes will prefer to fight carriers - covered by fighters. IF he can indeed track the tankers and follow them - he will suck this force right into carrier striking range of the entire KB - which will reveal what it is - and whatever it is - we should sink it. Meanwhile we will let the subs track and engage Lexington group (if that is what it is) and, whatever it does, it should remain a hostage of position - unable to go home because we are between it and home. I feel like Admiral Nelson chasing the French all the way to the Caribbean - and the distance is already similar - and then back again - finally to engage at Trafalgar. But we have the carriers, the fuel, and the planes - and one or both of these forces should be a carrier - so it is worth the hunt.

The fact remains, he is hunting our tankers! Impressive this early in the war, at the odds involved. It does not matter if he does so with cruisers or carriers - I am impressed.

I tried a reinforced (and ununified) division scale attack at Clark - only two infantry regiments available - well supported by artillery and two recon regiments with very light armor - and a HQ - and surprisingly reduced fortifications in spite of the massive number of opposing units. This eats his supplies. I will change tactics tomorrow now we know the details of what he has. We need time for more units to reach the scene, and to undo the demoralization effects of an attack at such poor odds - which were not severe but will become so if the troops are not given a break. We might wait for more troops to arrive - or we might pin this force and take the rest of Central Luzon - returning here in force in a week - after still more troops land. There are 100,000 supplies at San Fernando - we will restore any casualties fast. We took Iba - the unit sent to attack didn't have to - it surrendered to its mere presence - and there is

This is a look at the truk raid. Note the numbered screen sequence of events. Mission is to raid truk and cause the KB to retreat. Did not stay because might not survive the reaction. If a stay command had been given this would not be like in real life.

Refueling operations are a probem for the allies early because of no ASW trained air. so ElSid has staked out my major refueling sites w/ Iboats. Already took a torp into the Pensacola at Xmas island. This is probably an IJN doctrine violation. Note both Dutch Harbor and Tahiti are covered.

On the China road ElCid wants to open a move to the north but not happening until he sends reinforcements. I would think operations in winter would cause casualties if the unit tries to move. I understand the mongols would be drinking horse blood to stay warm.

Down south above Hanchow the little jap armored company ran into a 300AV chinese stack this turn and attacked across a river. We will counterattack.
