In the transcript, the crew on several occasions ask people to be quiet or to leave the cockpit, and conversations suggest people in or around the cockpit were drinking beer, though there is no indication the crew themselves consumed alcohol.

Cutting defense budgets and not giving due attention to your military will, indeed, do it every time. Although most members of the crew seemed to have behaved in an exemplary manner and finest traditions, it was an uphill battle and a sad chapter.

That reminded me of the K-152 Nerpa incident from 2008. I still can't believe the Indians bought that thing in 2012...[8|]

Mercifully for most in compartments one and two, it was over with nearly instantaneously. From the summary of the event, the H2O2 fires ignited fires that got over 4000F and sympathetically triggered 5-7 additional torpedoes. Poor bastards never had a chance.

How so? Most of the casualties in that case were civilians who, by definition, one might say, could not have been expected to have had the quick reflex responses of military training and constant drill.

In that it was probable malfunction of a system on the submarine undergoing handover / sea trials / drills that led to the loss of life. After the initial typical efforts to blame the problem on externalities (a collision at sea for the Kursk, a crewman 'playing with the switches' on the K-152) and shift blame, the likely real story emerged years later.

Well, accidents do happen. Unless its something endemic to Russian hardware?

If by boilerplate you mean the shortest technological means to a given end, I certainly agree. But whereas you can more or less idiot proof a AK or an ATR, you can't say the same for a nuclear submarine.

The US military runs on maintenance, if not exactly spit and polish. Until and unless the Russian military reaches the same level of proficiency, accidents will continue to happen.

Or you could have went with a Japanase car. You would also get a great meal. Also a good nights sleep, a hakimachi, a cup of sake, a half a tank of gas and a map to Okinawa. But I think they also throw in the floor mats and a lifetime warrenty....for you. So a coin toss. [:D]

Actually the USN's not immune to shipyard disasters. Look what happened to the USS Miami. And there's always the Sturgeon class that sank at the dock because they left a hose running![X(]

The USSR had a long sad history of submarine disasters , usually nuclear related. Except for Thresher and Scorpion disasters our nuke problem has been relatively safe, but our diesels have had their share of mishaps. [:(]
