As your map of northern China looks eerily familiar, I'm going to start training two small fighter squadrons in recon. Just a thought.
I also can't get any offensive missions to fly from Sian. Not sure why not on this.

First a "BTW": the Admiral has been traveling (in the US gathering Intel, no doubt). Might be a turn later but I have visitors coming for a day and a half so maybe not.

Sian in this scenario starts out as a size 1 airbase which I think precludes offensive missions. I'm waiting to see if I can blunt his initial offensive before I even consider expanding the base. Supply is too dear and I have already decided to give up the expanded fortifications at Kukong.

And of course my fighters are pitiful and my fighter pilots, training hard as they are, are barely up to the quality of the pitiful planes. I might bring the AVG into Sian when he starts hitting that base.

You were highly disrupted, 900+ pre-attack casualties, zero forts and out of supply. Looks like you will have fewer units ti supply now.

Odd Wenchow feel so early with so much there. I had until mid-April with a much worse ratio of starting AV. I guess the dice weren't kind this time.

From your map above looks like you have a good blockade around Sian. Any other major x3 defensive setups developing behind Changsha? I find that center undefendable and like to start early digging behind it.

Part of the Wenchow turn of events this time was the adjustment Walter made. After seeing it take so long in so many AAR's and having it take so long in our last game - as he put it due to him bringing too little - Walter brought much more force right away. Possibly some were better units too, Wenchow got immediate aerial bombardment to stymie fortification, significant aerial bombardment overall, some naval bombardment...

I only have a few units at places behind Changsha but others are on the way. Tuyun is reinforced and fortifying, which I think is a significant defensive point. The biggest factor will be pulling back in time. I want to avoid him battering units and destroying their heavy equipment.

• One of the problems with playing the campaign game is a side effect of the time it takes. Our last game was 5 years and 2 months. Now, at the beginning of the beginning (apologies to Churchill) I just don't have any aircraft!

• SigInt shows some AA units aboard ship heading for Cam Ranh Bay. Are they destined for China or Burma?

• Extensive IJN sub activity. They still attack our destroyers as often as our destroyers attack them.

• Tennessee and Arizona are in the shipyard at Bremerton. West Virginia is well on her way to San Francisco. Nevada and Oklahoma must wait 4 more days for adequate escort.

Colorado has an important upgrade starting Jan. 01 that improves her AA IIRC. She cannot do much right now anywhere on the map (because of the lack of air cover and effective ASW and her own crew experience) so I favor doing the upgrade rather than putting her out there. Warspite has enough experience and a few knots extra speed to be somewhat useful if you can hide and protect her.

I looked into that and it seems like (in this mod, Babes 28-C) Colorado was getting the upgrade at game start, which her sister ships became eligible for on Jan 1, '42. She finished up several days before Warspite.

As you say, her AA is rather weak in spite of the upgrade. Not Dec 7th weak, but still weak enough to give pause. I think I am going to get her to Pearl Harbor to stand by for operations. I have no operations presently in mind for the USN old BB's but they can bombard Midway if conquered or perhaps even fight there. As was the case in history I am shying away from deploying them in the broader reaches of the Pacfic due to fuel concerns. For example each of the three carriers at Pago Pago has remained at anchor there since it arrived. I think that is helping the situation so I will be more ready/able to strike when the right opportunity arises. I know that some old BB's protected convoy routes in the Pacific for a time but that was later when adequate fuel could be moved around.

I haven't decided what to do with Warspite. Maybe Australia? Send her across the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean? Operate with the USN? I'm pretty sure the DD's that just delivered Tennessee and Arizona to Bremerton will take over ASW duties near San Diego/Los Angeles while those more capable destroyers on duty now take Yorktown to Pago Pago.

• A slight incursion by KB2, now 1 hex NW of Billiton under heavy rain clouds. A strike against our corvettes on ASW patrol got no hits. The remaining combatants which can leave Java (due to range limitations) are doing so.

• An enemy sub spotted ARD Soerabaja at Banjoewangi after transiting the Madura Strait. Soerabaja has capacity 20,000 tons and is a prime target so the Empire now knows the ARD's are on the move and will surely hunt them with subs.

• An Imperial surface force is 2 hexes NE of Ambon and was attacked from the air several times without effect.

China
• 4 Imperial units are moving on Pingsiang. The terrain is not favorable and we do not have enough to hold that spot anyway so we shall have to start yielding the Changsha area. Keeping heavy equipment will be critical to defending in favorable terrain; keeping heavy equipment means not allowing units to be destroyed or even retreated to the extent possible.

• With the fall of Mergui I presume there will be some movement on Moulmein.

The much more valuable KV's are still in the Java Sea headed for the Madura Strait. Boise and Co. will operate from there to Tjilatjap to hunt the IJN DD's.

• The IJN CA surface force is heading west and passed Kendari, now 2 hexes WSW of there. The RN surface forces are divided into three TF (each with DD's): 2x CA; 4x CL with lighter 6 inch guns; 3x CL with heavier 6 inch guns (one CL has a mixture). The CL almost all have torpedoes. We will sortie all three TF and stand a chance of doing serious harm to some IJN heavies and lights.

• Contact lost with KB2. Perhaps they moved back to dodge subs or maybe they are hidden under weather.

• The IJN DD's withdrawing near Batavia were attacked from the air several times without effect. One of our CL TF's moved to chase the CL Nagara group and had several engagements with IJN subs.

• Happily the Imperials just barely made 1 to 2 odds in their second all out attempt on the direct road to Sian.

A report I distrust is one of the DD's which hit a mine sunk. The upper TF is one ship, the lower TF is two ships. The Dutch squadron is right behind them and the channel they are heading for was just mined.
