I'll try to find somewhere to let the Zeros strafe. It will need to be away from allied AA though.
SSX on defensive patrols in base hexes might be worthwhile. I don't want to use any more of them where they don't have a withdrawal route.
For Burma, Pegu currently has less allied troops than Rangoon and Moulmein so I will definitely look at landing a Div+ there. The 2x orphan Regts from 55th Div will move by ship past Singapore as soon as it is captured and the mines are cleared. They will probably land at Tavoy and walk to Moulmein.
I need to move a few more recon air groups to Chiang Mai to get some eyes on the Burma/China border. I can spare them from Malaya now so will move some next turn.

SUMMARY FOR 28 DEC 41
CrackSabbath lives on W coast USA, while I am on E coast of Aus. His timezone is -18 hours of mine, so quite often one of us sends the game file to the other and the other is able to take actions in game immediately. I can only open the game for up to a few hours maximum each evening, but that seems to be working quite well as I get the rest of the day to think about my next move.
The latest game file was in my inbox when I work up this morning. That created one of life’s big dilemmas: make myself a coffee before running the turn and risk waking up wife and/or offspring in the process, or try and watch the replay and compute what is going on before having a coffee?
I went for option one, ran the turn and saved the file. Being un-caffeinated, I sent the save game file back instead of the combat replay which was of no use. I realised just as I clicked send so followed up with an explanation and the 001 file.

Here is the latest summary of the results. So far we are getting through the turns a lot quicker than I thought possible at nearly one/day, and I’m really enjoying the uncertainty that comes with playing against a human.

Looking at the Int screen after the turn, the final score looks like 7:3 in favour of the IJAAF with a few H81 kills credited to my pilots later in the day. The factories built 4 new Oscars and this group lost 3 shot down, so at least I didn’t go backwards in Oscars today. I will try to rotate these Oscars between sweep / CAP for the next week or so to stay unpredictable here and keep fatigue low / morale high. I will also hold off upgrading my next Nate group to Oscars until I have a small stockpile of Oscars to provide combat loss replacements in this active group. It feels good to finally be doing something offensive in Burma.

33rd Division – it was a 50:50 call while they were at sea passing CRB, but I’m glad I sent 33rd Div to Malaya and not directly to Burma. With their help, Malaya should be clear within the next week, which will let 33rd Div rail to Thailand/Burma, and free up 18th Div and IG Div for other things. 18th Div will either reinforce Palembang, or if it falls quickly move to clear northern Sumatra. The current plan is to keep the IG Div as a theatre reserve / ready reaction force based at Singapore. The main allied moves that I am detecting are into Burma so I may commit the IG Div there in the near future. I am not comfortable at the moment with all Southern Army Divisions committed, as I have no reserve to react to unexpected allied moves. I want to form a reserve based around 1 x Division, but while I have the allies on the back foot now might be too soon. I’ll ponder this some more before committing the IG Div anywhere.

Fusan expands port to size 7 – the resources flowing from CMK to Japan will speed up again as this port can now load larger convoys faster. Fusan will expand to P8 then I plan to buy out a lot (all?) construction engineers and move them to build up ports in Hokkaido, Sakhalin and Ominato.

I would not put the SSX in a base hex which has enemy units at the base since they will try to visit the port. I would put them in open ocean. They will not react but I have had enemy convoys run over them and they have torpedoed ships. They do need to have a patrol set for just that hex, with no patrol set they will try to return to base and only make it two hexes before they have set put up a loin cloth as a sail.

AMc Wa 19 detects Allied Aircraft at 48,91 near Palembang – I have 2 x AMc in separate task forces at Palembang now. No sign of enemy minefields so the assault force will continue. The first wave is half a turn away so should start to unload, with follow on forces also in bound. I plan to get land based Zeroes in the air over Palembang immediately as I’m expecting B-17s to go after the oil fields. I have a few AA Regts in the follow up force so plan to make the B-17s pay a price for visiting.

Looks like I cut it from the summary report, but some Sally “recon” ground bombing shows there is already a Chinese Div at Lashio. I need more recon eyes into Burma but CrackSabbath may have already covered the vacant bases.

EDIT: Here it is. This Chinese "Division" is probably closer to a Bn in combat power, but dropping paras on it in Jungle Rough terrain sounds like something CAPT Risky would do.

I didn't get much of a chance to review the game before work this morning, so was wondering all day HTF so many IJA squads were disabled at Wenchow. Apart from the 50% losses to 19th Division, who I think had just arrived in hex so probably had no field forts, at first glance everyone else looked to be in pretty good shape. Fast forward to Friday evening and I get a chance to take a closer look...

Following orders, COL Takeda threw the 2nd Independent Mixed Regiment at the city walls.

One Bn destroyed outright, two Bns wounded. Not even a single infantry section can be mustered at 2IMR roll call that evening.
Lesson learnt from this (again, because I already knew this!) is to avoid including units that lack combat engineers in assaults on fortified objectives. I can't fault the courage of these 1s and 0s, they just didn't have any sappers to follow.

You've got a lot of troops that will be ground down in Wenchow. While you're fighting and losing squads to disablements there he's digging into x3 territory.

I'd advise pulling out and moving to the centre, leaving Wenchow for the Chinese and keeping it disabled as an airbase. There's nothing he can really use it for anyway.

An easy China is dependent on quick movement, outrunning the Chinese hordes, and suppressing any Allied attempts to jump your bombing runs. As Japan the timing is everything. So to lose this 4 ID plus stack of troops for the next few months isn't going to help you at all.

Even though England gave the Wallabies a rugby lesson, Palembang was captured with no damage to industry!
The Singapore assault force have also established a bridgehead, but have some impressively high disruption and fatigue so they won't launch another deliberate attack until they are both reduced.

The map shows a fast road from Cagayan SE to it, but I want to push forward with my SNLF units instead of spending time here to mop these allied troops up. I will keep recon and aerial bombardment on them with small garrisons in the bases that need them on Mindanao to protect against this allied force taking any offensive action. I will clear them later, with troops yet to be identified.

Following orders, COL Takeda threw the 2nd Independent Mixed Regiment at the city walls.

One Bn destroyed outright, two Bns wounded. Not even a single infantry section can be mustered at 2IMR roll call that evening.
Lesson learnt from this (again, because I already knew this!) is to avoid including units that lack combat engineers in assaults on fortified objectives. I can't fault the courage of these 1s and 0s, they just didn't have any sappers to follow.

BTW, that unit is now prime for 'buying out' (will load on ships). I find such units to be useful in defense of certain island.[:D]
