I just learned on the Doonesbury website of all places, that the first known use of the acronym OMG was in a letter written in 1917 by Jackie Fisher to Winston Churchill.
Whoever knew that the "valley girls" were in such august company?

No. But someone should take a deep breath and think this through. In the unlikely event this incarnation of the Thread gets locked, whats the absolute worst that could happen? We start another. Frankly I don't think that Joe, Erik, or any one else at Matrix is that petty or anal. They are decent, down to earth , very reasonable people. I just don't see a pretty girl in a bikini as that big a deal. T's toe on the other hand should be classified as a "digit of mass destruction" and should be addressed, and banned , by the UN. [:D]
No - the worse that could happen is that the Thread gets closed permanently.
The deal was: we were allowed to have this thread/Thread to talk about stuff unrelated to gaming on this GAMING forum PROVIDED WE KEPT IT CLEAN. They were originally adverse to having this happen and we probably all remember attacks on the Thread from people not posting here how this is not related to the "core statement" of the forum... and from the responses of the forum members, it struck a nerve.
So, if someone got sufficiently annoyed, they
could close the whole thing down... i am not saying that they will, but realize you are playing with fire here and you/we might get burnt.
Personally, i have no objection to scantily clad animals of any form on the Thread EXCEPT THAT IT MIGHT GET THE THREAD CLOSED DOWN.
OK, you've conviced me. We should refrain from posting anything with girls, animals, sports, politics, religion, news, or any thing of importance that might somehow offend someone, somehow ,somewhere. So lets go back to the usual mindless drivel, stay with wishing each other "good morning" or "good day" , or "How's the weather". Surely no one will be offended by that. We might even occassionally mention the game. [8|]
Oh, come off it... nothing was said about most of the subjects above, though there is supposed to be a "ban" against politics and religion... mostly i notice the ban against politics is enforced only when certain people decide the subject offends THEIR politics.
Again. personally, i have nothing against photos of any kind of the forum - but we DID agree not to post them.
As far as it being inoffensive to post the photo in question about it being "inoffensive" - well, i've seen photos on billboards in Britain that would quite frankly get you arrested over in the USA. This forum is, for better or worse, run from the USA so, alas, we must conform to local standards.
As far as hypocrisy - i have no argument about that. But as long as we agreed to the rules, i think it is best we stick to them, lest we find the Thread consigned to oblivion.
Of course, the members can in fact ignore the agreement, and there may (or may not) be consequences. Just stating the obvious risks here.

Simple fact is this:
- The picture is not offensive in any way shape or form.
- Just as important, the comments posted on the thread concerning the picture were not offensive or demeaning.
- There was essentially a few harmless comments made in a spirit of fun. Nothing for anyone to get uptight about.
- One person made an issue of it. The same person who - while deciding in his infinite wisdom that the picture of the young lady would get the thread locked - quite happily took part in a political discussion re Libya just a few days beforehand on The Thread.
- This "discussion" quickly turned nasty and that person made the following delightful post - "There's not one square centimeter of Libya that's worth one drop of European or American blood. So no, Hortlund, (you stuck-up, holier-than-thou git) I don't care."
- So political talk, abuse of another threadster for daring to have an alternative opinion, and (mild) swearing is okay but not that picture? Double standards per chance?
Anyway, I was drawn to The Thread because it was supposedly a place "where people who do not take themselves too seriously" could hang out and post whatever came to mind. There are some good guys on here, but frankly I get too much grief from one individual to make it worthwhile.
Hortlund is not a Threadster but a passerby. Those two have had run-ins before. You would be wise not to judge about that of which you know nothing.

Mynok - that comment is unworthy of you.
Firstly, the fact that they have history is - as you well know - not the point. Even if they "have history" the language used in that post, and the tone of the comment, is not up to forum rules and standards. Nor indeed was the nature of the political discussion in the first place.
Secondly, I assumed from USS America's oft repeated refrain about this thread being open to anyone, that a "threadster" was anyone that took up that invitation and joined in the fun. If that is not the case, and instead there is an elite group that can verbally treat "non-threadsters" or "passers by" in a way that breaks forum rules then so be it. Is that what you are saying?

The OED just adopted a number of computer jargon acronyms this year. OMG was one, as was, IIRC, LOL and IMHO. No word yet on ROFLMAO or STFU. [;)]

STFU? Chickenboy do you want this thread closed down or what? [:'(]
Why would the acronym for "Standard Terminology For Urbanites" get us closed down? [:'(]

This is why we voluntarily ban politics.

No, but there are some individuals out there who knowingly will come in here to bait certain other individuals. We know who they are.

Another bad translation of another bad Russian joke:
Gepetto is dying. The villan (who is inexplicably called Stromboli in the Disney version) is at his bedside attempting to finally get his secret out of him.
-Tell me before you die, old man, how did you manage to control a wooden puppet without strings?
-Wi-Fi.

IMO there's nothing wrong with that pic too make it family unfriendly, certainly no worse than some of the avatars and sig banners out there on the forums. It's another symptom of the world we live in, too worried about offending someone, somewhere. I also realise that it's not my forum and someone else makes the rules and sometimes that is going to involve some compromise on my part.
In fact, in my opinion it show that we are in a world of hypocrisy.
We should not show a nice girl unclad. We shall not let thought about love or sexual pleasure.
We shall also not speak about politics subject.
We shall hide everything and anything.
But the entire world lie: politician lie to their people or people of others country, they sell weapons in secret, they give power to great industry to polute our world, to poison us, they admit a financial crisis that lead people to starve, to die of disease, to work for too few money, to look at their children diying of lack of food; we are in a world were a simple word about religion can kill, or where young people in gang kill to sell drugs, or kill just for the fun.
We are in a garbage world.
But we shall not show a girl in bikini.
I hate this world
In this case Eric, you should be glad that you live in your country, where it is okay for a child to see a woman's bare breast. In the US it is okay for children to see murders and violence portrayed on their televisions, but not the beauty of the human body. [:(]
Obviously, we made have made a conscious decision about which is more dangerous. Not really surprising considering that whole Original Sin bit. [:-]
[Disclaimer: the above is meant strictly in humorous terms, lest someone get offended.]

The person in question (and I say this as someone who at one point publicly defended him as being unfairly maligned by thin-skinned people who couldnt counter his arguments and turned to attacking their source) is an exception, not the rule here. Said person is incredibly knowledgeable both about this game and history in general and could be an invaluable resource to the community. Instead, he is rash, abusive and generally disliked not because his arguments are so powerful, as I had previously thought, but because he is apt to fly off the handle into verbal abuse at the slightest provocation, and often no provocation at all save the one in his mind. At this point, I have absolutely no pity for him as he is his own worst enemy and I refuse to excuse that.
On the topic of the picture, when I posted it, I specifically selected one that was both attractive and completely unsuggestive of anything that might even remotely be taken as nudity. The form of dress exhibited by the young lady on the picture can easily be found on a billboard, a TV commercial or a magazine ad and I cannot fathom how anyone would find it objectionable. Of course, such things are in the eye of the beholder.

Sorry Bob, but I've seen billboards with women wearing less in the middle of NYC and to my knowledge not one concerned mother had filed any complaints that her child is now mentally damaged because he caught sight of a partially exposed boob (which this young lady does not, by the way).
As I said in the other post, I feel that there is nothing objectionable about the picture other than what an impartial observer might read into it.
