A foot in a half of snow makes me want to shut my face in a car door at work...so difficult in the transportation industry.

Mainly it is people not being man enough to drive on dry roads that half the snow already cleared off... [:@] Their kids have off of school, so they should have off of work too.

The tagging of railroad cars can be very interesting. It is my understanding that the taggers (vandals to the railroad and the law) like to have a place to put their "mark". The larger, the better and railcars can be quite large (nearly 90'x14' with some cars).

I hunt trains for a hobby. You may ask how you "hunt trains", well you follow their tracks! [:D] Some railfan humor there. I have seen quite a few very interesting "tagging" of railcars. Some quite humorous, and most making you scratch you head wondering what the vandal was trying to convey. The railroads, for the most part, only clean off or cover back over the critical parts of the car (Railroad ID and car details such as capacity and such) instead of the whole car as it is not economical to do so.

There is a big debate in the model railroad community as to if this aspect of railroading should be modeled as it promotes what is a crime. Many are on both sides of the debate.

The "taggers" also love the idea of their work traveling all around the country on the side of rail cars for everyone to see.

I grew up in Upstate New York, in the Finger Lakes Region (150 inches, 380cm of snow a year). Usually, with my front wheel drive Dodge Grand Caravan, I can get through up to a foot of snow at a time without difficulty. I do find it amusing that others in the Middle Tennessee area where I live now, panic with a light dusting of snow on the road. Good luck finding anything perishable at any grocery store even though the white stuff will be gone off the roads in one day or less from just the variable temperature around here.

We have had some snows that drifted over five feet and lasted for five days or so, that was some difficult times, but it has happened once in 30 years and still counting... I was a fire chief at the time and had a Dodge Ram Charger with a five ton winch on it. I ploughed through those drifts with that truck to deliver generators to medically in need persons in areas without power. Lots of fun and lots of white faces on the nurses in the passenger seat. [:D]

Ice... Now that is another story... I don't care who you are, Ice doesn't like anyone to be on the road.

We got 5" of the white stuff last night. The plows hadn't come through our side street, so off I went through the snow in my Honda Civic (I've got good snow tires). No problemo. Snow is pretty straightforward to drive through. Patch ice or glaze (black) ice: Not so much.

Possible inch tonight. No prob.

Black ice the worst nightmare scenario.

Once it snows here, it is here to stay. Anywhere from 5 months to 8 months. October to sometimes May.

We got 6-8 inches of the white stuff. They plow furrows on farms very well here. Roads? Not so well. [:(] I get by find with my little Hyndai (front wheel drive with a standard transmission). But for some reason ,almost every vehicle you see in the ditch here is a 4 wheel drive SUV ? [:D]

That happens here as well every year when the first snow comes. It is as if the 4WD SUV drivers think that just because they have just 4WD, they're immune to skidding off the road. To my pleasure, they're wrong [:D]

I've been off the road once since I recieved my drivers licence some 31 years ago. First winter, I seriously overestimated my driving abilities in relation to the speed and the state of the road and so went off. No injuries and the car could be driven from the place after the tow truck pulled me up. I've never done that mistake again [knock on wood] [:'(][:)]
