Castor,
I think the damaged a/c issue up at PJ/OJ has to do with weather. These are actic zone bases and it is January. In my PBEM we are in August of 1944 and my P-47 at Adak are getting dinged up without even flying missions.
the problem is that this not only happens up North due to arctic weather, but also in the SRA, in Japan, on Makin, Truk, etc... everywhere... [8|]

still seeing occasional flak fire... but it´s not enough to really influence our training runs here. And it´s still safer to do those training runs from one hex against occasional flak fire than to do it from two hexes against an undefended target. Three bases here in one hex range of the target, one is already built up to level 7 (max), the other ones are at 4/4 and 5/4 while 200 engineers are working at both bases to max them out.

I guess we will have something like 1000+ high experineced fighters in total when the enemy will launch his next major offensive. And this will mean that we will be able to really hurt the enemy again if he choses a target of high value for me where we can employ both LBA and carriers, just like we did it in the Gilberts. And in expected five months, we will start producing the Frank (if the R&D is succesful which I expect with 400+ R&D already) and this won´t make life easier for the Allied. I´m not sure about the effect of our land based Type 13 radar sets as I haven´t seen more than one aerial engagement under friendly radar coverage so far but the one I´ve seen wasn´t impressing. We are getting hundreds of aircraft as reinforcements the next weeks and my training bases will fill up to the maximum again, while we will be able to move out dozens of daitais/sentais that have reached 80+ again. Amazing and the first time that I enter 44 with an airforce that has a higher average experience than it had at the start of the war. [:D] There´s one bug that I´ve discovered though as the Type 13 radar set has a replacement rate set in the editor of 30/month but we have produced 200 already and all our base forces are equipped with it already. This is strange so to say...[&:]
I guess it was the right choice not to engage the enemy if it wasn´t 100% necessary while concentrating everything I had when I had to. India, Northern Australia and especially the Gilberts come to mind. (while the enemy didn´t engage our invasion forces in India). The rest of the time nearly every aircraft that wasn´t in reserve somewhere near the front was doing training runs and with all the reinforcements I will get, the number of high exp daitais at the front should even go up the next couple of months. We will be ready in mid 44 and I doubt the enemy will be able to field nearly the same number of carrier based ac (not to talk about the quality) than we can in the next 6 months. Of course the hr about max number of carrier based ac per hex is helping the Allied now as I can´t put all my carriers into one hex. LOL, it has helped the Allied in the early stages of the war, it was equal near the Gilberts with more or less equal forces and is now helping the Allied again due to me having more carriers than the Allied. The hr was intended to "help" the Allied until 43 while it should help the Japanese from mid 43 on until the end of the war. If we see a carrier clash until the end of the year than we are not helpless, there are advantages for both sides. Our biggest advantage is the fact that we now have the Jill, with a torp range of 5, max range of 6. While the Zeke has a range of 6, the Judy only has a range of 5 so we probably won´t attack from further than 5 hexes if not 100% necessary. Also an advantage is the fact that we have higher exp pilots (at least at the moment). This of course doesn´t mean we should underestimate the enemy ability to hurt us hard as there are more advantages on the enemy´s side IMO. Allied sipborne flak is a killer and could/will take out lots of our bombers again. The Hellcat is superior to the Zeke and will probably achieve a 2.5:1 on Cap and perhaps a 1:1.5 or 1:2 on escort if the exp of the Hellcat pilots is high enough. The Allied ac are far more durable than ours and therefore many more ac will survive. The Helldiver is available already and IIRC it will drop 1000bl bombs at 4 hexes and this definetely is a problem for our fragile carriers. Which leads me to another big advantage of the Allied: their carriers can absorb and amazing amount of damage and if you don´t put five torps and some bombs into them you can´t be sure that they will sink. Put three or four 1000lb bombs into an IJN carrier and the chances are high to see it sink if not near a major port. It will be interesting in any case if there will ever be a carrier engagement in this campaign. The basic strategy hasn´t changed though: do not engage the enemy carriers with your carriers without having big LBA support. Even after having let 1000 land based ac loose against the Allied carriers near the Gilberts, we still lost CV Junyo (and nearly two CVEs) to an already trashed enemy carrier air arm. But trading Junyo for half a dozen Essex class carriers and some CVLs, BBs etc. was nevertheless a dream for every JFB. No matter how many epic victories we achieved so far, we should not get overconfident, I guess this is what we should bear in mind. As long as we´re cautios we will be able to achieve more than we will achieve with a hooorey style strategy.
CV Taiho has arrived and the airgroups will now be doing training runs for at least 1,5 - 2 months. CV Katsuragi will also arrive within the next two weeks. Shinano is out 9 more months and will be ready for front duty at the beginning of 45. By then, all our CVs will be completed except CVL Ibuki which I don´t care much about. Also four CVEs are still in the production queue but I don´t care about them either (they´re all crap) and as soon as I can stop them I will do that.
All in all, we´re looking at a very nice strategic situation at the moment. Even for 42 we would be in a perfect situation but we are already in 44. [:D] While I´ve always said that we can´t "win", another disaster for the Allied like they suffered near the Gilberts would give us the chance to really win! lol...
I can tell you my biggest fear at the moment though: in mid 44, some 150 B-29 will arrive each month and this means the enemy can trash everything in 24 hex range of level 6 airfields (min airfield size by hr for B-29).

at the moment we have a 1850 aircraft capacity at all our training airfields and they are filled out nearly to the max, some 1800 ac I guess. An airfield is considered a training airfield if it´s one hex away from the target. With the possibility to further increase three of the airfields we will have a max capacity of 2150 as soon as all of them will have hit the max level, but this will take at least 4 more months as I have only dedicated 2x200 engineers to build them up.

Here´s the newly arrived CV Taiho stripped off it´s airgroups that are heading to Clark field for enhanced training. CV Taiho is the best carrier at the moment and will be part of KB which I hope to see as consisting of:
CV Taiho
CV Shokaku
CV Zuikaku
CV Unryu
CV Amagi
CV Katsuragi
CV Hiryu
the four Kongo class BBs
BB Ise (converted and carrying two dozen float planes)
5 CLs (with their upgraded AA suits)
8 DDs Akizuki class
togheter around 450 carrier based ac. You may wonder why I haven´t Kaga and Akagi in KB and the reason for this is simple. The three Unryus all carry Type 13 radar sets while Kaga and Akagi don´t (nor do the other carriers in KB). I´ve also got CLs with good AA values (for Japanese terms) and radar and this enables me to include the Akizukis with their 3.9 DP guns in the TF instead of the radar equipped Yugumos. The radar equipped Yugumos will be included in "baby KB" (lol) which will be full of fleet CVs and CVLs lead by Akagi and Kaga. Having 7 CVs and 5 BBs in KB also gives me hope that if the enemy will get through my Cap (which he will for sure) then damage will hopefully be spread out between those ships. AA value of KB will be around 8000, which is a hell a lot for a Japanese TF. I guess an enemy CV TF has around 15.000 if it comes along with 5 Essex classes, one or two modern BBs and escorts.
Planto use the carriers is the same as near the Gilberts as soon as LBA has worn down the enemy. Send in KB, followed by "baby KB". The only thing that went wrong near the Gilberts was the fact that the enemy carriers attacked baby KB (that was one hex further away from the enemy than KB) instead of going after KB with a higher number of fighters on Cap. This resulted in Junyo sunk while it otherwise could have resulted in either no damage or only light damage to one or two carriers within KB.

I´m sorry guys, the game is just as boring as it has been since the Allied defeat near the Gilberts... can´t blame the Allied that there´s nothing going on and I´m not really tempted to do much more in an offensive way than the upcoming ground war against the Chinese... should I invade the West Coast??? air strike out of the Aleutians. I hovered over Attu and Kiska and Attu showed an airbalance of 3000+ [8|]. Well, I would have bet my arse off that there are not the allowed 250 ac but FAR more. So I´ve stated in my email that I´m not "happy" about it when I´m sure that bigbaba keeps deliberetely ignoring the most important hr in this PBEM: STACKING LIMITS! [:@] At least he admitted that there were far too many ac and he moved them out. He told me that half of the ac seemed to have been damaged... [8|] any reason why this should make me feel better? He didn´t care about stacking limits when he took over from Miller again and I accepted it to some degree as he had to regroup all his aircraft according to his plans. But this has been long ago and when I´m now sure that he bases something like twice the allowed ac at a front base I could really tick out. If I would be sure to find another opponent (which is hardly possible after bigbaba has thrown away all of his CVs near the Gilberts) I would tell him that if I´m just once again thinking he would ignore the stacking limits I would bail out.
Attu and Kiska are now back to "reasonable" ac numbers (according to the airbalance numbers) but there are lots of other bases where I´m 100% sure that there are probably twice (if not more) ac than allowed. Airbalance numbers aren´t telling you 100% exact ac numbers but if you get used to you can easily find out if somewhere are 200 ac or 400. [8|] At the moment I´m sure that a base some 10 hexes East of Attu received all the excess ac from Attu and Kiska and is now far above allowed numbers, same for the Fidjis and New Caledoina (Noumea for sure). So what to do now? Asking again: "could it be that you have absolutely ignored our stacking limit at Suva?" [8|] "And perhaps also at Noumea?" [8|] "And at x?" [8|] "And y?" [8|]
This is getting annoying. Either you follow hrs or you don´t. If you don´t, then don´t expect your opponent to accept it forever... [:o] Especially if he knows how to read the airbalance numbers... [>:]

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!
three hexes South of Chungking, a lonely, understrenght and out of supply Chinese Corps is kicked one hex back... our adjusted av looks horrible once again, but so does the enemy´s adjusted av...
the situation in China is stable again already. The enemy seems to now dig in at Chungking and Kweiyang and not going further on the offensive... he lost the initiative anyway after being able to kick out my fully supplied troops from both towns with his out of supply units... now it´s too late, reinforcements are in position and we will soon finish the Chinese once and for all...

the remaining Russian troops (several divisions) are obviously starving and they will starve to death. The will suffer the same faith as the US troops suffered at Manila... they are obviously completely out of supply and as soon as they hit 1200 av I will move out one of my divisions... with my experience of fighting out of supply Chinese (that kick my arse) I won´t be too self confident in keeping the out of supply Russian honest...

if the Allied commander isn´t coming up with a bright idea how to wreck my airforce then it will really be game over for him. I´ve already got at least as many high experienced daitais around like I´ve had before the epic defeat of the Allied carrier force near the Gilberts. And with all the training I´ve ordered the number is steadily growing. And there´s nothing else my airforce has to do... It´s nearly February and with the R&D of the Frank that we´re doing I expect to see this ac in June. If he isn´t able to knock out my IJAAF fighter sentais before that date, then he will have another huge problem. And seriously, I can´t see much he could do to knock them out as I won´t get into an attrition battle if I don´t need to...

something is going on, we have spotted three TFs going to PM, no idea if this is a resupply, a reinforcemt or evacuation (doubtfully) attempt. No reason to alert my airforce though, there are hundreds of Allied fighters at PM (Corsairs, Spitfires, Thunderbolts...), so it wouldn´t be worth at all to try something.

one of the now seldome 4E strikes up North. The increased activity lately has alerted me to some kind and therefore all my important bases up North received reinforcements. It´s winter and therefore I don´t fear much in terms of an Allied invasion as winter alone would account for horrendous losses during an amphibious operation but I didn´t want to see spring and my bases not garrissoned like I would like them to have. We also have more than enough aircraft in Japan (something I always have) and also enough ac in nearby (Russian) training airfields. I don´t fear much up North and it´s doubtful if the enemy will really show up. But I guess he was up to something as he completely overstacked Kiska and Attu (until I told him I wouldn´t tolerate this).

the good news of the day: CV Katsuragi arrived today! Another Unryu class carrier that will aid to the might of my carrier force. The daitais will be stripped off the carrier and will be sent to Clark airfield for two months (at least) of training. The daitais arrived with exp below 50 and are therefore not usable... but we don´t need the carrier now anyway, I can field far more operational carriers (with the creme de la creme of IJN aviation in regards of high exp pilots) than the Allied can. It´s still more or less unbelievable what my opponent all did wrong near the Gilberts. There was just no reason to lose all those capitol ships.

Yesterday I had 150 Tonies on LRCAP in the Gili Gili area to protect this barge convoy. Well, it was more to knock down a dozen of the Aussie Beafighters on nav attack. Unfortunately yesterday all bombers from PM attack the lonely AK at Thursday and none went after my barges. Due to fearing a massed Corsair/Thunderbolt sweep today, I´ve moved out all my Tonies and the barges were helpless... one is lost, I guess we can afford that... [;)]

Baker is still on my list of potential Allied targets and it´s one of the few logical targets. But I guess the Allied won´t do anything that is logical anymore... [:D] While it´s a potential target (and the Allied would do well attacking it, as this is one of the ways they should - and could - go), it´s a target of only third class for me. Not even the Gilberts were a high priority target for me and I didn´t want to defend them at all costs. The only reason I sent in KB was the fact that I had a fair chance to inflict "some" damage. Would the evacuation have been done like I would have done it, I wouldn´t have sent in KB nor my LBA...
