No. Kirkenes was occupied by Germany and actually an important German base during WWII. And since you mentioned the bombing I did a quck search on it and found out that it was indeed bombed alot.

"Reportedly Kirkenes keeps a second place after Malta on a list of european towns experiencing air-raid alarms and attacks, with more than 1000 alarms and 320 air attacks." from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirkenes

This is the only part of Norway not occupied by Germany during WWII. It played an significant role during WWII and Germany sent about 200 bomb missions here. Any idea on what part of Norway this is?
Since I got so many answers so fast I will give you another hint.

It had the British codename "Island X". During most of the war the station here sent an updated report every 3rd hour. All around the clock. It was these reports that Germany tried to stop with their bombings but after about 200 bombings with no success they abandoned their efforts in silencing the radio reports.

Not Spitsbergen?

gasp.

FAIL!

Well I give up.

@FroonP. uh no, it's actually written as Spitsbergen, with an "s". Not that it's important though.

From 1943 to 1946 USA had a base here as well called "Atlantic City".

Edit. A picture of the remains of the main Norweigan base during WWII.

Good question - I've just looked it up - I've read about that place a hundred times when reading about the Russian convoys but didn't put two and two together - well done [:)]

Indeed. [:)]

Jan Mayen is the correct answer. The meteorological intelligence from here was a big help for the artic conwoys as well as many other aspects of WWII, including operation Overlord.

So, in "ORP", "RP" must mean "Republic of Poland".

Does "ORP" mean "Of the Republic of Poland" ?
