Today is last day of the year... and it is +18 degrees Centigrade (64.4 degrees Fahrenheit)... sunny day just like late Easter in spring... and normal for this time of the year is around 0 degrees Centigrade (32 degrees Fahrenheit)...

I know this is no comfort for all our Thread brothers across the big pond who suffer big freeze (and few Europeans in the North as well)... but to all of you I wish you nice New Year's Eve!

It is a pleasant day for you, but I can't help thinking the people of Ukraine without power can sure use that! I hope it reached them.

Hard to believe it's 2023 ... I still recall in school penning 1975 and looking forward to 1976 since it would have been our 200 year celebration, now in just three more years 250 years ... my how time flies.
In 1976 I built a scale model of the Alamo for the New Jersey state history fair. I received 2nd place out of 1000's of entries. Proud moment....GP
Oh that is really cool. I remember back in the 70s and 80s going to the local county fair, there used to be a section that had modelers displaying their dioramas (you don't see that word much any more lol), everything from hot rods to WW2 and Civil War models of all sizes and shapes, I'd spend hours in there looking at them as a kid. Fascinated how all my 1/32 (or was it 1/35) scale Shermans, Stuarts, Lees, and a few Panzers never looked like the 'pros' lol, I even got a block of wood once and tried painting it green and springing dirt and stuff on it lol, but it never took lol.

From there I got in to board war games in the 70s and my mom would take me to hobby stores and let me play with "adults" who played war games. Things were so different back then.

Good Moring Folks btw!

Good evening, gentlemen ! Ladies too, if there are any.

It’s weird, in fact. I know a lot of girls and women who play boardgames, video games, RPGs, but none which play real war games, let alone as obsessively detailed as WitP. And it’s not that they can’t be competitive or aggressive in games (ask my sisters…). Is war gaming the last « gendered » hobby ? :?:

I think there are few women who play these games. And fewer still who play WitP.

With that said, I think we treasure those few that do, and would like to see an increase of their numbers.

I totally support that last part. But while I have successfully introduced RPG’s and boardgames to many representatives of the fair gender over the years, I never managed to interest one of those to war games. Maybe it’ll take another generation or two…

I have yet to introduce anyone, successfully, to the world of boardgames. Discounting a few relatives that play boardgames with me once a year. That doesn't feel like a success to me.

However, I had the honour of playing a war game, by email, with Lady Rhondalynn a few years back. Although she left us far to soon. May she rest in peace. And, I am sure, where there is one, there is more.

It feels to me that this hobby is shrinking, so I am not sure that waiting a generation, or two, solves things. My guess is that increasing its appeal, and accessibility, might be a good approach.

You’re right, I did not think about that. I have had far better success introducing people to boardgames and RPG’s than to true wargames. The closest I managed to, were to games such as Game of Thrones, Mega-Civilization or Axis & Allies, and I’m not sure they qualify as wargames.

Where’s that geezer thread ?
