Engineers were moved from Rota to Guam, and there are at least two more trips worth. The stream of combat troops withdrawn from Guam is just beginning to reach destination bases.

Kaimana airfield is size 3, port size 1, with fighters and recon in place. As Babo was auto-occupied a short time ago, we will send tankers there to pick up oil in the next few weeks. Kai-eilanden is size 1 airfield and size 1 port, with fighters and naval search in place.

Our unit there is still weak and has lousy experience, but the terrain is good. 4,239 AV at Chungking. After leaving them there for a long time, our forces attacked a trapped Imperial unit at Paoshan. I had hoped they would be weak enough to be destroyed, but they retreated in good order, although they must be completely devoid of supply now.

4th USMC Div upgraded its combat and assault engineer squads and is moving back to the battle hex for the next attack. Along with the other units moving up, that will be 963 AV adding to the 2,465 AV there at the moment, for about 3,428 AV at attack time. It will take the moving units at least two but at most three days to be in position, and attack the following turn.

Suffolk's and Repulse's TFs arrived at Ramree Island without being spotted. There are still convoys at Tavoy (where KXVIII is trying to limp away to safety), but no more covering forces far out at sea.

Dispatching more ships from the Pacific to increase the East Coast -> Aden cargo run for supplying India. I also transferred 3x B-24J squadrons from Babeldaob to Ledo. For supply reasons they will transfer again and operate out of Diamond Harbor. I have plenty of 4EB squadrons in Pac and SWPac compared to the frontage to operate them from, so these transfers will put more metal on target. There are three more B-24J squadrons (previously transferred) arriving at Aden in the coming 14 days.

CVE Corregidor collides with CVE Suwannee at 106 , 95

Suwanee 2-13(10)-14(13)-0, Corregidor 3-8(8)-4(4)-0. They are heading to Truk, and possibly to Pearl Harbor after that. Indiana has finished her upgrade at Pearl harbor and is making for Truk to refuel.

Here is a look at the first day of recon of Ternate, Manado, and Talaud-eilanden. The last is empty while the former two show 7,500 to 10,500 troops each. Succeeding days of recon will probably increase those estimates.

All units have arrived at the battle hex SW of Toungoo and the attack is ordered for tomorrow. 3,510 AV will participate. We've brought in some bomber groups that are still training, reassigned a P-39D group, and brought on line the three B-24J groups that just transferred in from the Pacific.

An IJN task force is at Iwo Jima, seen to consist of mine layers and heavy cruisers. We are sending a modern CL TF but it will take at least two days to get there, so likely the Emperor's sailors will escape.

Guam airfield is increasing in size 14% each day regardless of bringing in more engineers, so I might have hit the upper limit of how many can contribute. The field stands at size 6 + 73%.

Loads of PT, a bunch of DE, and the carriers Lexington and Saratoga have all applied their January '44 upgrades. Those two damaged CVE arrived at Truk and have been ordered to Pearl Harbor for their repairs.

IIRC, the IJN CMs can haul troops and cargo - perhaps it's a fast transport convoy you spotted. They unload pretty fast
so you are probably right about them slipping away.

However, I'm betting it is minelaying, so if you send the CL group, you might want to consider sending some minesweepers along and letting the CL TF follow them into the void. It would be shameful to get there, find them doing their dastardly work and have 2 CLs clear mines the hard way. Not a pretty prospect.

With Guam AF building so nicely, are you ready to make the jump to Tinian/Saipan soon? The Mariannas crumbling at the start of 1944. Wow, I am amazed at Admiral Wa's restraint regarding the KB. I felt he would commit them wholesale to prevent this, but nary a sighting of them in the area. I am sure he is aware of the strategic bombing menace to the Home Islands that results from the fall of the Mariannas. I wonder what trickeration he has up his sleeve? He is much to devious to passively forego the opportunity (now pasted) to engage the US CVs and invading forces outside LBA range.

Although I would "like" Guam to be fully built out first, having the airfield fully built out will be enough. And the travel time of trips to/from the troop staging areas will already cover that. Guam is over stacked with mostly just engineers right now, but not too bad. I could put a division or some other units on there if I have to. Rota (also SL 35,000) will be just a bit under stacked when SoPac HQ (prepared for Saipan) gets ashore this next turn. So basically it's down to transit time for 1) ferry the second wave into Guam and Rota, 2) bring the first wave in direct with the second wave ferried in right after. I should have enough LST to make the ferrying of 2nd wave very slick.

I wasn't too surprised about the IJN carriers' restraint in the Marianas, but I'm closer to it and have more of a feel for this particular contest. First off the IJN carrier force was still significantly dented at the time. We had virtually the full USN carrier force available - minus one CVE taken by a sub - to cover the invasion. By now I'm sure that some new platforms have arrived plus repair time completed on some others. The key was to get in before the IJN carrier force again became a major threat to the USN CVs.

I'm not even sure about Iwo Jima, but with the additional passage of time and the proximity to the Home Islands the chances are greater. The Philippines will trigger intervention, as would a jump right to the Okinawa area or Formosa.

Well, as I see it, you get stronger and stronger relative to his CV force. You covered very well and executed a very nice landing. However, I really expected him to make a big move. The deterrent value of a fleet in being is reduced as more and more US CV/CVLs arrive on the scene. We shall see. Well done regarding Guam and Rota!

Various convoys have completed their delivery of units from Guam and are now heading toward pickup of units for Saipan. One convoy picked up units to invade Aitape and will deliver those on the way to pick up Saipan invaders. Guam itself has gone to 88% toward size 7 airfield, 15% better than yesterday so that appears to be the maximum daily increase we will get. the airfield will make size 7 tomorrow and then take about 6 to 8 days to max out at size 8.

I see you tend to overstack a lot in every attack. Don't you find that the distruption levels get too high when attacking in overstack? I've had horrendous losses when overstacking like that...losses that I'm not so sure the allies can really efford considering their pitfull replacement rates (especially for artillery pieces and british squads)

I don't do it for every attack, but a) where overcoming the defense requires it and b) where supply can be had to support it. In this hex disruption gets down to single digits up to low teens, varying by unit. That's as high as I want to see.

I'm getting in the supply, but without doing the math I could see that the last attack just sucked in supply like one of those jet powered vacuum cleaners. Supply "required" went up too at least 2.5 times after compared to before.

I'm close to calling off the attacks there. I much prefer to break that hex, as it will cause the fall of Pegu-Rangoon. Anyone who says that the current land model allows the Allies to roll through Burma too easily... [:D]

That attack was a mistake committed by a now extinct member of DAW HQ, as was the shock attack in Burma yesterday. If this keeps up all the assistants in DAW HQ will be raw recruits.

Burma itself was quiet as our forces near Toungoo recover. Air attack are being kept up, of course.

4,198 AV at Chungking and the aerial assaults there were very effective today. There are only 141 Imperial AFV at Kunming, perhaps 20% or even less of the total that was there when DAW HQ tried to seize the base. When they show up at Chungking, that city will fall.

The B-24 groups switched to Pegu today and scored 7 supply hits. Tomorrow they start hitting Rangoon, where presumably there is a cache of supply to be destroyed. There is a small(?) IJN TF standing out 3 hexes from Tavoy. With a CL and DD sighted they are probably guarding the arrival of convoys. Several FB torpedo armed missions against them were turned back by weather.

It looks like about a week or 8 days until Guam airfield is maxed out at size 8. The roundup of units for Saipan continues without incident. The Wotje invasion force will finish loading supplies tomorrow and head to Makin to rendezvous with the CA and CL TFs.

I think this attack went in our favor, or at least as much as any battle at Chungking can at this point. I also think this was an armored unit-only attack. Another Imperial unit is seen entering the city from the west. 4,055 AV at Chungking now. To the east of Kunming our P-47 pilots hunted down some George fighters LRCAPing the area. 7 out of 10 believed down for no losses.

The B-24 groups scored a total of 5 supply hits on Rangoon. BB Queen Elizabeth has made it to Colombo. I don't see bringing her forward until more mass is available. A total of 6 British destroyers are undergoing upgrades right now, and 6 others plus two Dutch DD are also due (or overdue) for theirs.

Submarine Dorado hit a mine at Iwo Jima and will head directly to Pearl Harbor for repairs. Shuffling continues for the Saipan invasion. It looks like we will be able to land at least 5 divisions in the first wave, plus most or all of the supporting cast, and maybe even all 6 divisions. Using a number of LST to ferry troops from Rota is the key, but still not sure about that last division. There is plenty to do so the invasion won't be for about 2 weeks, probably a bit longer. Two separate AK convoys are loading up supply, so along with what the troop convoys carry the units will probably have close to 200,000 supply piled on the various beaches. Based on the bombardment results I think the fortification level on Saipan is quite high, so they will need every bit of it.

The landings at Aitape were unremarkable except that there was no bombardment from the Imperial defenders. Recon puts enemy strength at 1,100+. Our two Bns will attack tomorrow.

BB Colorado has finished yard work at Alameda and will head to Pearl Harbor, where she will await her February '44 upgrade.

Air strikes on Chunking destroed dozens of squads! 4,062 AV there now. An enemy unit has arrived at Tsuyung from the west (one of the cut-off units) and will be attacked at once. Bombing strikes will try to keep the unit to the east from arriving tomorrow and spoiling our attack.

We got whumped in the air over Rangoon. Our P-51A sweeps, two squadrons, showed up first each squdron alone and got badly mauled. The three P-47D2 squadrons showed up at the end of the day and got a handful of defenders for no losses. In between, the B-24J groups came in and wound up losing a total of 15 for the day. They made a total of 3 supply hits (plus some other hits of course). The P-51A pool is basically dry after refilling one group (they have to wait a week to take the other two aircraft), so one squadron has upgraded to P-47D2. That does drain the P-47 pool to single digits, but they are much more survivable and more deadly. See the air losses for the day at the end for the carnage.

3,161 AV in the battle hex near Toungoo and the attack is ordered for tomorrow. Also, long range recon of Tavoy (from Calcutta!) starts tomorrow. Two small surface TF (CA plus escort and CL plus escort) are staging to be in position to bombard Moulmein. As there is a lot of IJN traffic near and south of Tavoy, let's see what this stirs up.

It looks as though the USA divisions about to take part in the Saipan invasion will have time to upgrade their infantry squads during the remaining time reuqired to shuffle everybody into position. Anti-armor will remain at 55 but anti-soft will go from 22 to 25. The USMC division will not be able to likewise upgrade as there are not enough USMC '44 infantry squads yet built. USN PBY-5 now have drop tanks and those on search duty (as opposed to training or awaiting deployment) will start using them.

The Wotje invasion goes in tomorrow. Overnight the CL and CA TFs will bombard, both with their escorts and at a range of 10,000 yards. Tha tankers are at Babo without being spotted. Ternate airfield is empty except for what looks like search planes and damaged bombers. 30+ fighters and bombers have shown up at Kendari over the last couple of days.

Three of our subs got hit hard, with Tinosa sinking. In return our subs got an xAP and an xAKL. IJN E class ASW vessels are making life more difficult for our subs, perhaps due to recent upgrades?

Our 4EB hit Koepang again, the airfield now showing 84% damage. Likewise Ternate was hit again and brought to 37% damage in spite of fighter opposition.

We slipped this surface action group into position for an attack on shipping into Iwo Jima undetected until today. They were attacked several times by Betty bombers that appeared to fly from Iwo Jima. The xAP mentioned earlier was at Iwo Jima, so perhaps we can hit that convoy tonight? If not, it seems likely that we have disrupted the Emperor's shipping timetable!
