On the 14th the Allies fly only a few Hurri sweeps and one by Spit VIII. None do well. I'm surprised by how well the defence has handled the Spit VIII in particular. This airframe is usually among the toughest. Maybe the RAF pilots are not as strong?

The current scene in Burma. He still looks to be moving into the jungle hex just outside of Rangoon for a shock across the river. We'll see.

Almost caught up. Only about five more days to go over to get to the present turn. It's a lot of the same right now, the Allies trying to wear down Japanese defences. I've kept the bases being attacked to a strict limit of CAP for a few reasons. I could flood Sapporo with 500 fighters, but I want to both encourage continuing sweeps and continue to get close to 1:1 in losses. Over our bases this should mean we are winning the pilot quality battle as well, as Allied aces go KIA/MIA in enemy territory. Managing the low CAP seems to work better with smaller numbers, somewhere between 200-300 planes. More than that and the big bad Corsair sweeps really accumulate more losses.

I also want to win the airframe battle, but it'll be hard for the next few months. I won't be able to field only Franks and Georges to deal with what the Allies are using. Oscars and Tojos have an important place as low CAP, and they have larger pools right now. I am completely out of Georges after adding to depleted groups this turn, and Franks are near the end of he pools, but I have the 90 Frank Ki-84b that have just come online and I've just fleshed out my first group of those, so this should keep me flying Franks as top of the low CAP for a good while. The J2M5 is also producing, and once those are more plentiful, I'll put those in the middle 7k band and/or on the top 9k band of CAP.

The next and last edition of the George, the N1K5, will begin production in late September I am predicting, so about a month from now. That'll double George production (up to 240) and fill in nicely as we wait for the Ki-84r that will arrive in late Nov or early Dec 44.

On the 15th the Allies sent the sweeps again. Corsairs are tough!! Luckily he sent Hellcats and Lightnings too. The Allies win the day, but only 118-95. How long can we each sustain 70-100 fighter losses a day?

In OZ the Allies move on Katherine and take it easily. They'll have Darwin within a few weeks. Then what?

A lot of sweeps again at Sapporo and a few more at Rangoon. Corsairs continue to do a lot of damage and the other airframes struggle. I'll switch to trying some high CAP to get above Corsairs soon, but then the P-47 and P-38 will do better. Always a compromise!

Sweeps continue. Shocked still at how well the Japanese are handling the Spit VIII. In one sweep the CAP at Rangoon took out almost a whole 18 plane group.

Corsairs pick off a lot of A6M8 I forgot to limit range on after moving CAP out of Sapporo. Silly, but it happens. The 4Es suffered a lot from Flak taking on Shasukotan. Not bad overall, getting 5 4E and 29 Spit VIII altogether.

In OZ the Allies move quickly to take Fenton. I might have to fly in a garrison unit to Darwin just to hold them off for a while. Delay, delay, delay.

Today the high CAP was tried at Sapporo for the first time. It didn't do badly against Corsairs, but did suffer more as expected during P-47 sweeps. On the day though it was a huge success, as the Allies decided to try a limited bombing strike there, using mostly RAF Libs. The almost intact CAP that didn't lose it's strength fighting the gullwings decimated the Hellcat escorts before digging into the bombers. A few were shot down, a few more damaged and then killed off by Flak, and the strike got almost no hits against the base.

If not for 25 Judys lost on the ground in the Kuriles the Japanese would have had a big positive in air loss points, but still do well where it counts. I'll be counting up airframes soon to see what Allied pools might look like now, but I have to think he'll be running thin on Corsairs, Hellcats, P-47s and earlier P-38s by now.

Very little progress has been made in strat bombing VPs over the last month as defences have stiffened. On July 28 the total was 2508 compared to 2526 on Aug 18. This gives me hope that a tough Japanese air defence can fight off the one base kitchen sink landing at shizuoka and at least make him take some risks to extend that foothold, creating some opportunities for Japan.

Corsair sweeps hit the CAP hard to start off on the 19th.

The CAP is still strong as the bombers arrive, and the escorts are whittled down to the point that the 4Es are hit before the bombing runs.

The second B-29 run is really hit hard, with quite a few being shot down and many more damaged and more susceptible to Flak and ops losses.

Back to the grind on the 19th. Amazing this has been going so long. Knowing Dan, and having read many of his AARs, I would guess he is interested in "attriting" the Japanese air force, but it feels to me with the average losses being nearly equal over the past 8-10 days, the Allies will be hurting more than the Japanese at this point. One indication is seeing 400+ auxiliary aircraft at Shikuka, and fighter numbers dipping below 600 (from a previous 850). This means a lot have been lost and a lot are being patched up (many of the auxiliaries, and probably lots of 4Es in that number too).

Today the Allies went for Kushiro, and again the CAP was strong, lasting through the Corsair purges to strike the main bomber formations hard. Of 32 B-29-1 sent out today, about 11 were destroyed or lost to damage. [&o]

The Allies did hit the resources, getting 250+ strat VPs, but there was a big price in airframes, and he used P-47D25 groups to escort which were crushed for almost 40 lost. A very good day for the defences! [8D]

There are still numerous TFs protecting Shikuka. I counted at least 3-4 cruiser TFs, 2-3 DD TFs, 1-2 BB TFs, and a bunch of PTs. The notes scroll off the page though, so I have no idea what I'm missing.

He has sent a few 2 DD TFs to Para to interdict ASW ops. I've now put those back away since subs have been reduced significantly through air and seas efforts.

As for the big guns and CVs, I have a feeling they'll show up when the damaged CVs are back in action. He may not want to risk another effort without having the full DS. Dan is a kitchen sink guy.

Alternatively, he could be moving on Sumatra as I write! [:D]

I have vacated most of my ground and air forces from the DEI, so if he's noticed, and cares, he might consider that an opportunity. I think it'd be risking a lot to leave the troops at Shikuka for that long. Especially since his fighters are now being worn down. I'm curious how long he'll keep up these efforts. I have a good reserve on Honshu, and the KB is resting, so soon there may be an opportunity to get them back in action. Managed to upgrade CAs and a few CVEs and BBs during the lull. [:)]

Now that the KAI Dinah is online I have two more IJAAF night fighter groups I can use. I've just upgraded them to the NF line from recon, and now they will head back to the HI to defend rear areas like Nagasakie and Fukuoka.

The AA has been more evenly distributed now, and most bigger bases are fairly well defended with NF in range, day fighters at base, and AA for all altitudes.

I'm also building all bases that I can afford to a port/airfield combo of 7 to activate balloons, and getting forts built up as well to make more balloons active. I'll burn through a lot of supply, but I've been conservative so far on airframe factory changes/increases and RnD builds. There have also been a lot of periods of relative inactivity over the years, so I think I'm in a position now to make crisis decisions and use some of the reserve for necessary Home Island defences.

I won't be doing any more building farther South than Formosa or Iwo Jima. Most bases that need them have had forts built and are only there now to delay Allied advances.

Ok. I wasn't able to post until now. Too many turns to do and too much travel.

The B-29s hit Sapporo at night for a bit of damage, but NF and flak have their say too. This kind of strike will quickly wear down his numbers, as about another 7-8 are destroyed on the night.

Other than this the only other action is a lot of island bombing at Onneketon-Jima, with a lot of damaged 4Es, and an Allied attack that failed at Darwin. It won't be long though, and then what?

On the 21st the Allies hit Urruppa-Jima, and again, not much else. The island bombing is slowing some fort building, but everything is still steadily moving upward. All of the middle Kuriles are approaching forts 5, and while the NE and SW edge bases are approaching forts 6, with Para going for forts 7.

Some tough sweeps on the 22nd at Sapporo, but the CAP weathers the storm.

On the 23rd I move some fresh groups in and they perform really well. I also set some CAP on the millruns in the Kuriles, and catch some nice fat 4Es. [:)]

I'm wary. Stuff is on in North Australia, so something will likely come there. I just can't do much about it right now.

Hokkaido/Honshu: This would be tough for him, and would release an invasion package as well as activating kamis. Sapporo just reached level 9 forts. Bihoro is nearing level 8. The rest have good terrain and at least 6 forts, and there is about 5k AV on Hokkaido, plus a lot of CD guns.

Fighter base islands: This is entirely possible, but again, those are Home Island bases, and would release the package plus activate kamis. I'm building all nearby islands up now with forts at around 3-4 and troops installed. If he came close I'd start flying more to Sadagashima and others. He'd have to really commit to get some, but I could make it messy.

Clean LOC: This means Kuriles. This is what I'm planning and hoping for really. They are ready. If he has 7-8k of invasion troops at Sakhalin, to take them quickly he would have to commit 3k AV to Para, 2k to most others. These are now more well defended than I've ever gotten the Marianas. Helps to be close to home!

Korea is building along all coasts. The Eastern bases are in tough terrain, and have very good divisions installed. More could rail to wherever a landing took place within a few days. it's also close to lots of Japanese bases. I'd say this is not high on his list, but I've been wrong before.

Thailand Malaya: Yes. This makes complete sense. I would have done it last month, but maybe the troops aren't available, at least if he was planning for stage two in the North, maybe everything is up there. It would probably still be tough, and LBA could be transferred quickly to help out.

This is a good day i the air for Japan. The Allies send massive strikes on Sapporo and Pegu in the North and South. Both are met with a persistent CAP that lasts through sweeps and hits bombers hard. The tough combo of canon mounted fighters and big gun flak decimates Allied 4E and 2E!! [&o]

This should but a damper on the bombing efforts for a while, but unfortunately no B-29s were involved. He did get to the HI in Sapporo, but the price is too high for the 60-70 strat points gained.

On the day nearly 250 Allied planes are shot down and about 75 4Es lost. [8D]

To top it off a Chinese unit walking up the mountains decides to try to open a river bedside and shocks into 1,000AV of well entrenched Japanese troops and tanks. It's not going to make it back.

The Chinese troops coming from india are slowing flooding up and into the Japanese lines. This was the first attack by any of them, and if more come this way, I have a feeling it won't end well for them.

There are some spots where they've moved around the rivers, but are still facing well fortified Japanese divisions in x3 terrain.
