I am trying to learn how to make better screen shots for my AAR's and thought I would do an example of the basics of attacking. This will also help some of the new players I hope.
First a look at what I am up against in Belgium.
this is the basic build of the Belgium forces. The main thing that worries me about this unit is the anti tank gun, so i don't want to use armor against it if I don't have to.

now a look at my objectives .
My primary is the City of Antwerp but to attack it properly I need to hit it from two sides. So I need to take my secondary objective to be able to take my primary objective.

because of the anti tank gun I dont want to use armor and i want to hit it from at least two sides so ill move some infantry into place and prep the target with an arty attack.

then I can attack my primary from these positions.

I have moved two Infantry units into place and am prepared to attack notice the attack stack info written across the bottom of the picture. it says ATTACK STACK 91/100. you want to keep the first number as close to the second number as possible. this prevents crowding and helps to keep your losses down.
This pic is right after my arty attack.

I only lost 1 heavy infantry and they retreated.

now I have moved my units into position for the attack on my primary.
notice that their are a lot of units in Antwerp defending and you would think that you need to hit it with everything you have to take it. But this is a mistake and ill demonstrate it for you.
in this pic I have selected all my units capable of attacking now notice the ATTACK STACK totals.
307/100 is way out of line and if I did this attack i would take antwerp but I would also take heavy casualties.
so lets get that number as close to 100/100 as we can and then attack. If the first attack fails then we will do it again until we succeed.

ok we have selected two infantry units and our ATTACK STACK numbers are now inline. also notice the CONC BONUS is 10% this is because we are attacking from two sides and we get a combat bonus of 10% added on top of any other bonuses.
we prep the target with artillery and then we attack !.

and this is the attack results
as you can see we won with only two Infantry units attacking and we have captured Antwerp.
Primary objective achieved.

and the combat totals for both of those attacks.
These attacks where just about perfect you cant expect better results than this.

next we will attack Liege. This is a little different because we have no artillery available to prep the attack , but we are able to attack this from 3 sides.
Once again notice the ATTACK STACK numbers are about even and that the CONCBONUS is now 50%. This is 50% because we are able to attack from 3 sides.
Also notice that once again he has several units defending.

and the results for all three attacks.
so there you have it. A small guide on conducting attacks. Remember that results will vary due to so many variables in the game but that is the basic way to attack.
Hope this helps some folks.

we attacked Amsterdam twice and failed. we are only able to attack from 1 side and as you can see this makes it a lot harder.
this is the second attack.
you can see our arty unit that we used to prep for the first attck.

and a look at our ending positions.
I could attack more but I am going to wait a turn and let the enemy units suffer from no supply making them easier to take next turn.

and scrolled down
we encountered some of the enemies new generation of fighters, but our 109's performed well. We will need to start research on improving our planes asap or soon fall behind.

a look at the ending positions in the Balkans
west.
we are attacking that city to the west across a river ,from one side only and without artillery prep so our losses have been high and we haven't taken it yet as you can see.

and center.
around Belgrade we where able to open up a supply line to our airborne troops and get some reinforcements into that battered airborne regiment.
