Axis turn of October 23rd, 1942

At sea a second U-Boat flotilla was destroyed in a month with the demise of the 6th U-boat Flotilla off the coast of Labrador. In the Arctic Ocean, the small German fleet centered around the Deutschland and the Hipper squadrons engaged the Allied navy. The Admiral Scheer, accompanying the Deutschland, was damaged in the battle and the whole squadron returned home while the Hipper and Blücher from the second squadron continued their patrols. On the allied side, an unidentified French Battleship was also damaged.

In Algeria, the retreat and redeployment continue in front of superior US forces.

In Libya, the XVI panzer that was trapped almost freed itself, but the UK I Armor Corps resisted, barely, the combined assaults of German and Italian troops. OKH therefore considers the panzer corps lost as it could not possibly survive a serious attack in its actual shape. Plans are being drawn for a massive retreat in the sector.

Axis turn of November 6th, 1942

The XVI Panzer Corps surrenders to General Wavell after a brief negotiation. It was clear no help could come for the trapped corps after last week attempts at breakout. As the same time, Canadian and British troops encircled Tobruk and started the siege of the city defended by an Italian Mechanized Corps. Rome is assessing the situation and whether or not the city is worth defending.

In Algeria, the Americans seem to be trying to flank the Italians from the South in the difficult mountainous terrain.

Further North, the Hipper squadron made port at Narvik to resupply before been expected to resume its hunt in the Artic Ocean.

Axis turn of November 20th, 1942

All quiet on the Eastern front. Both sides seem content to wait for the winter.

In the Western front, Germany is slowly building up an Atlantic wall in France and Benelux while at the same time trying to beef-up defenses in Germany proper against air raids.

In Algeria, US tanks showed up on the Southern flank. At General Messe’s request, OKH dispatched a German division to reinforce the Italians.

In Libya, the Italian army is trapped around Benghazi but still holds Tobruk. Interpretation of radio traffic seems to indicate some concerns on the Commonwealth side regarding overextended supply lines.

Axis turn of December 4th, 1942

Over Germany the brutal bombing campaign continues, this time with more interference by the Luftwaffe making the Allies pay for it.

In Libya, British troops retreated, having overextended their supply lines. No attack on Tobruk was attempted yet, however the Regia Aeronautica launched an attack on the Royal Navy patrolling off the port, but with no notable success.

In Algeria Germany sent two more corps to reinforce the Italians. Marshal Rommel, with no effective command left, was asked to take charge of those forces as soon as possible.

The Hipper squadron continues its raiding in the Artic, now joined by the Deutschland squadron that came back after repairs in Oslo but is now operating independently.

Axis turn of December 18th, 1942

In Libya, the battered Italian army mounted an attack on the British when it became clear that their supply position is precarious with neither Tobruk nor Benghazi in their hands. The attack failed but it did show that the British troops are indeed in no shape to mount a serious offensive for now.

During the offensive, the Eolo air division and its fame torpedo bombers launched an attack on the British fleet blockading Tobruk and managed to sink the whole London squadron composed of the heavy cruisers London and Sussex as well as 3 destroyers for escort. Only a lone destroyer from the squadron is believed to have survived.

In Algeria the rain put a stop to offensives actions and US troops even retreated a few miles.

In the Soviet Union the Red Army probed German defenses near Kursk and Kalinin but no serious operation was mounted yet. OKH suspects that Stava has ordered a testing of Axis defenses to plan a more serious offensive for this winter.

Axis turn of January 1st, 1943

A second winter on the Western front. Axis troops are feeling the cold once again, while the Red Army of 1943 is not the same one that was pushed aside in 1941. Stavka has ordered an offensive West of Moscow and North-West of Rzhev. Other smaller attempts also took place further south in Ukraine.

North-West of Rzhev, the quality of the German supply lines are very variable during the winter and after seen the battle effectiveness of the 1st PanzerGrenadier been greatly diminished by the Soviet attacks, the decision to retreat closer to the rail lines was taken.

In the Southern sector, things are relatively calm for now, but the commitment of the Red Air Force in the last few days is showing to OKH that the Red Army might be preparing something in this sector as well.

In Finland, the Red Army has resumed its slow, for now, advance toward Helsinki.
