It was sort of a dilemma. I was assuming the surface group I formed would head off any of his.

It looked like the lead carrier group that everyone else was following would enter a new hex first, right before the other two groups, and that's when they got caught.

Lowest numbered TFs have the first chance to be involved in combat.
If your CV TFs are lower numbered than your SCTF, swap the ships between them (using Escort as the TF mode while doing so).

I don't know if it could have been done differently - the game engine is reading a database and typically any program accessing a database starts with the lowest index number and moves through. Not sure if that can be randomized without missing some of the database entries.

Something to watch for in the future.

Quiet all around. I'm putting some of the longer ranged recon planes at Roi-Namur on max range naval search to try and find the TFs I encountered before.

Indefatigable has arrived at Aden. Unusually, she's loaded out pretty good, with 30 Avengers and 48 Seafires. Two RN CVEs are enroute also, from Cape Town, mostly carrying TBFs.

I can get a little more daring in the Indian Ocean.

13th October 1944

I was looking through the kill counts of my fleet carriers.

VF-8 is tops at 125. Pretty good with this being their first combat tour. Several other squadrons in that TF are in the 40-50 range. The other TF didn't seem to rack them up as much.

15 October 1944

Still quiet and will probably be that way for awhile.

Calcutta seems to be repaired up, but no planes have moved in. I'll jump on them the moment they do.

I've been reviewing supply convoys to Cape Town, as I'm bottlenecked there right now. Over the next 76 days, about 800K of supply should come in, which can jump things in India a bit. It looks like convoys stop after 1945, so after that, I'll have to manually push supply in. Two of the three convoys will arrive within 25 and 46 days with most of the above amount, so I'll be shipping again before long.

Troops are prepping at Pearl for Eniwetok and Ponape. I'll probably take them one at a time and overload battleships and rocket craft on each. I've started recon on Wake and that may be on the short list, too. Either way, I can push recon out further after that to cover the Marianas. I'm a couple hexes short right now. If I take Ponape, I can start massive Jug sweeps of Truk like I've done in India. I figure when I finally deal with KB, I'll try to deny them any free cover from bases like that.

16 October 1944

My bombers in India are recovering nicely. B-29s at Madras and Tanjore are paying the port at Calcutta a visit next turn. Need to cull MTBs, plus do additional damage.

The first of my two fleet carrier TFs is back at Pearl. I went through the squadrons before disbanding. Looks like Avengers really didn't suffer many losses. Not sure why they didn't fly much when they were out. Most of the dash-3 Hellcats are upgrading to dash-5. I couldn't do this for VF-1 for some reason. I'll try when the ship's repaired. None of my carriers needs more than 4 days in the yard. My late-made surface group is back also. New Jersey will need 14 days at portside. It's weird, 'cause if I put her in dry-dock, the time shoots up to 34 days. Weird.

King George V arrives at Aden next turn. More muscle for the Indian ocean.

My subs have been missing a lot lately. Probably 5 misses in the last three days. I might have to review leadership.

Two USN fleet carriers arrive in about 40-ish days. Then it's dry until at least Feb '45.

As mentioned, troops are prepping for Ponape and Eniwetok. When my invasion TFs get back, I'll get a division and a half going for Wake. Recon shows about 6,000 troops and a few search planes there. I only plan to hit one at a time right now. I may double up Wake with one of the other two, but I'll play it by ear. I think Ponape's rated as up to level 3 airfield, which means I can probably get it to 5. This will spell bad news for his various bases in the Pacific when that happens.

Does New Jersey have a destroyed device like a radar or gun turret that needs to be replaced? When the repair time shoots up in drydock it is usually because of that - the damage can't be fixed pierside so there is no time estimated for it then.

If VF-1 won't take Hellcat-5s, see if you can get it to take Corsairs! [:)]

An amphib reached Diego Garcia. That didn't go well, and I'm pulling everyone out. It turns out the IJA 4th Division is living there, and I won't be able to deal with them with the troops I sent. Fine... If you want an entire division to rot there, I'm okay with that. Of the 9 subs I just dispatched from Colombo, three USN ones will cover that base. I'm also relocating some B-25s to Addu, to ensure they never get supplied again...ever. The RN subs blockade Calcutta and the rest of the USN ones cover the DEI.

My damaged ships will probably make it back. The unfortunate part is that about 100 squads of Africans are stranded there right now, about half of them disabled. I'll need to organize a destroyer heavy rescue mission for them, if they survive that long.

Imphal is getting reduced slowly. I need to rest a day or two, as fatigue is factoring in.

I have an odd thing at Pearl. All my carriers are docked there, but they don't show up on the tooltip, nor can I find them on the "create task force" screen. I know some of them don't need repair, but I can't access them. They do show up on the ship finder screen on the top menu. I'm hoping I don't lose them. There's tons of ships in various states of repair at Pearl right now.

Ouch! Did you have a separate SCTF to guard your invasion fleet? Probably wise to always include a destroyer SCTF to guard against MTBs and other surface threats.

Also, I'm a little surprised you didn't notice a full division at Diego Garcia before. I would think recon missions would alert you to the rough number of troops while bombing and bombardment would have told you exactly which units are present. And with an isolated atoll like DG, there's no downside of taking the extra time to bombard the base before attacking. No way Japan is going to send carriers that far west in late 44.

No, I assumed this would be a milk run and he would have no significant land forces there. It does seem a waste to have a big high powered division camped on the netherlands. I guess that's one less for me to deal with in India.

At this point, I'm content to let them rot here. I'll have air and sub coverage on that island, so I'll hopefully prevent any more supply from coming in. It looks like he probably won't need any for a while anyway.

The African's surrender and are probably being cut up into afernoon snacks for the garrison.

IIRC the B-29 requires at least a level 7 airfield to take off with a full load. That should mean level 6 is a half load situation and level 5 is half load with increased op losses.

That is very interesting. I know I have had hundreds of ships in a single port before and never noted any issue, but then I was probably moving the whole herd out at once (start of the Marianas scenario) so when I started making TFs the numbers dropped below a hundred. It might be a good idea to query this problem on the tech forum. I would offer to do it but MichaelM would probably want you to upload a copy of the turn that had the problem.
