January 1st 1944

I-15 finds a damaged New Mexico near Pearl Harbour and adds a torpedo to her. She will have made the yards at Pearl okay.

Some N1K1 Rex fly into Truk and exchange 6 for 6 Liberators and 1 Mitchell lost to air/flak/ops.

Looks like the marines at Truk have recovered and may attack again soon.

Large numbers of Yusen N AK enter the yards to get more AA fitted.

January 3rd 1944

Liberators hit Miri at night. A6M5d-S trade 5 lost for 4 Liberators downed but lose 34 oil wells.

An Allied task force strays close to Cocos Islands and Nells put 2 torpedoes into the AK Allioth, on fire, heavy damage but no sinking sounds.

Allied paras take Mataram against no defense.

No Allied bombing of Truk (have my N1K1 Rex scared him off?). He could be resting them before an attack on some other base.

Heavy radio traffic at sea near Kavieng. Probably an amphibious task force I spotted near Ndeni a couple of days ago. Will it stop at Kavieng to re-organise and recover from disruption or continue on to attack somewhere, such as Woleai?

January 4th 1944

Liberators hit Miri at night again, I had added some Ki-43-IV to the defense. 9 A6M5d-S, 3 Ki-43-IV swapped for 2 B-24D1 downed. 1 point of oil damage. The A6M5d-S does not seem to be performing well so I will split the group in thirds, convert two back to the J1N1-S and leave just one flying the A6M5d-S. The P1Y2-S is what I plan on being the navy main night fighter but not expecting that before May.

Allied forces landing at Saumlaki. A few Nells from Koepang armed with bombs strike at 1000 feet (they only used 1x250kg and 2x60kg bombs, I had expected 2x250kg). Score 1 60kg hit on an AM.

I-182 finds a transport force near Kusaie Island and sinks a YMS.

Good to see that you're fighting the good fight on Truk. If the Marines are as battered as the combat report would suggest, they might be out of action for a couple of months as they recover. That's the big risk for the Allies for those sorts of operations - it requires your best troops, but a bad roll on the auto-shock attack and they're out of the game for a couple of months.

It must be the Allied flak that put the navy off their aim. 7 D4Y4, 4 G3M3 lost[:(].

I-176 was run over by the Allied invasion force heading for Madjene and sunk[:(].

I-8 torpedoes AKL FS-165 (probably fatal, 1 VP) East of Hawaii and is lightly damaged in return (6/6/0).

Mandatory bombardment at Madjene shows the Allies fairly weakened, they took heavy disablements in the landing, but the likely Allied bombardment will probably trash my defenders. Will try and see if can get some air strikes in.

Also, sighted carriers and an invasion force just off Aitape. If he attacks Aitape I don't care but if he carries on towards Sorong or turns North for Woleai it gets more interesting.

Massed Allied forces are attacking across the river at Prome. Reports of 90000+ troops, 1500 vehicles, etc. Opposing them is just a division and a unit of 6 28cm Howitzers behind level 4 forts. I'm going to stay and see what kind of effect I can have just to get a feel for future defense. He is attacking from a hex with a 40,000 limit so I wonder what the effect of his over-stack is?

January 6th 1944

I-122, I-171 and RO-106 are lost tangling with the Allied forces around Madjene. I-171 put a torpedo into APA Hunter Liggett (already hit by an 800kg bomb) but no sinking sounds. If she sinks (30 VP) it might have been worth the loss of 3 subs.

Heavy Allied bombardment at Madjene. Concentrates mostly on the port and does some damage to the base force there but no damage to the naval guard unit defending.

Liberators pound Ruteng into the ground. As there are no forces there and the base is unoccupied this may have been a routing error. Or he may have back tracked the direction arrows from yesterday's attacks and guessed the wrong base.

Some Helens try and hit the Allied troops at Madjene but the jungle is enough to protect them against significant damage. May try again with the dive bombers and 800kg bombs, he seems to have little flak present.

The Allied carriers have moved on past Hollandia and look to be heading for Sorong or somewhere in that area. In strike range of B7A2 at Sorong but fail to strike. He was also in range for the Army bombers at Boela and they would have been chewed up as they have little escort.

He is now in range for a run in and naval bombardment.

Another carrier force is detected near Aitape.

No initial bombardment from air or sea so I don't know if he had bad intel from somewhere or messed up some orders. One thing I have been doing to try and confuse his intel is split units, makes some difficulty guessing how many troops at each location.

Numerous planes are sent from Sorong to strike at Allied carriers near Biak. Torpedo bombers approach first and 4 G3M3 and 7 B7A2 get through CAP to launch torpedoes at carriers[:)], all miss[:@]. Army dive bombers come in next and all are slaughtered.

54 Ki-43-IV, 4 Ki-43-IIIa, 20 Ki-48-IIb, 18 Ki-48-IIc, 13 B7A2, 9 G3M3 for just 12 F6F-3 losses.

Co-ordination wasn't too bad with each type of bomber coming as a single group. So I think next time I try and use LBA I will just have D4Y4 and escorts present.

I send some fighters in at 27,000 feet to bomb his troops approaching Prome. Hope to use up AA flak with some safety and maybe cause some disruption and fatigue amongst some units. Doesn't work well as 10 Ki-43-IV are shot down by flak to score just a few hits[:(].

Bomb his troops at Madjene with bombers at 2000 feet and dive bombers, hoped the 800kg bombs could do some damage, no such luck[:(].

Allied liberators flatten Makassar airfield, just a few support troops there.

Allies clear the minefields at Rabaul, there is no supply left for the guns.

So what are the Allies up to?

Landings at Biak, Saumlaki, Madjene suggest a push towards either Yap/Ulithi area or Mindano. However, none of the landings involve significant forces (carriers can be re-located easily) so it could all be a big feint.

The landing at Truk suggested a push towards the Marianas but I expect he has been disappointed at the poor progress there so may be looking at my defenses in Marianas and been scared off.

The landing at Eniwetok doesn't make sense as an attempt to capture the base but could make sense as trying to drive away my float planes from there, but a bombardment would have done that better. So this could also be some sort of feint or misdirection.

His carriers are pretty well placed to move quickly towards Sumatra so he could be planning on covering a landing to isolate some of my forces in Burma or to strike at North Sumatra.

Or he could be trying to draw my forces South and then launch a hammer blow against the Home Isles. This seems the most likely explanation so I think KB will stay at home.

From what I have seen in the combat replay, the Marine divisions don't look all that battered, it is the armour that has been trashed. I'm pleased by the defense they are putting up. I'm fairly sure a big contribution is the naval fortress, some of those guns have serious damage potential.

Not a small island so not been any shock attacks.

I have noticed that the Lilly IIb and IIc are very fragile planes for whatever reason. They suffer exceptionally high losses in A2A and against enemy Flak.

They have armor and a high durability but very weak in guns...not sure why they suffer so much.

Liberators hit Miri at night, there are J1N1-S on CAP and they do very well, 4 J1N1-S lost for 9 B-24D1 downed (7 in air-air)[:)]. However, the J1N1-S runs out of ammo overly quickly and there are none left for the last strike that manages to knock out 13 oil wells with just 4 bomb hits[:(].

At Eniwetok the Allies continue to land and get this unusual result:

I doubt a 12cm AA gun does much damage to a ship[:D]. During the replay some message flashes up about a landing force wiped out.

Allied battleships bombard Rabaul heavily. Supply is gone and the troops suffer badly.

Biak is captured by the Allies, auto-capture so I don't know what he has landed.

Troops at Madjene are bombed heavily, the naval guard unit in defense is disrupted badly but losses are light.

It is a pity I pulled the LRCAP from the base as he sent no fighter support[:(].

Forts at Yap reach level 6. Engineers are being transferred to Rota and Mindanao to bring the base back down to the stacking limit.

Something Allied sinks (best guess the xAP I damaged at Saumlaki).

January 9th 1944

A night strike from Babeldoab tries to target the Allied carriers but all planes stray due to night.

Allies night bombard Rabaul and Madjene.

Hellcats sweep Madjene in the morning and clear the LRCAP out the way for the bombers. A deliberate attack by the Allies gets a 1::1 result and reduces forts to 1.

Thunderbolts sweep Samarinda in the afternoon.

Over the two combats: 37 N1K1-J, 9 Ki-84a, 5 Ki-43-IV, 4 Ki-84r for 15 F6F-3, 8 P-47D2. Not a good ratio[:(].

22 pilots KIA and 24 pilots WIA.

Carrier planes hit Sorong. Allies lose 10 TBM-1C and 4 SB2C-1C to ops and flak, I like that even though it closes the base[:)].

Overall for the day a 57 to 40 air loss is okay.

My disruptions are mostly in a division that had not unpacked. Losses favour my force and, with luck, the disruption from the river crossing will delay an Allied attack long enough to complete unpacking. However, forts reduced to 2, main Allied losses are in engineers which are easily replaceable, really want to destroy vehicles and guns.

Rabaul is being given a pounding.

Madjene is swept and bombed and the deliberate attack does a lot of damage. Disruption is out of control for my defenders.

Allied carriers are heading East having established the base at Biak.

January 11th 1944

Allied carriers move back towards Biak. Planes find two of my subs that I had tried to move out of the way. I-183 is sunk and I-38 is crippled and will be lost on the morrow[:(]. I also lose I-166 trying to attack a troop convoy near Aitape[:(]. Do Allies get some sort of boost to ASW efficiency in 1944, seems to have been a recent step change in their effectiveness?

Allies hit Samarinda airfield in daylight but it is a bit of mess up for the Allies[8D]. Spitfires and Lightnings sweep first and the defense does well enough. Then a 100+ Liberators attack and it is a disaster as aircraft are unable to penetrate defensive fire. Fortunately, lots of fragments of Liberators arrive and heavy losses are inflicted on them. Finally, Thunderbolts sweep but only a single plane is left in the air for them to shoot down.

26 N1K1-J, 10 Ki-84a, 9 Ki-43-IV, 9 Ki-84r traded for 28 B-24D1, 9 B-24J, 10 Spitfire VIII, 8 P-38G, 1 P-47D2[:)]. A nice overall result but the airfield at Samarinda is devastated and there are very few planes flightworthy.

Means I will need to abandon Samarinda and Balikpapan which also means will not be able to get much fuel out of there unless some can flow to Tarakan[:(].

Try to send some Helens to bomb the Allies at Prome. Flak is murderous and I lose 13 Ki-49-IIa[:(].

Army dive bombers come in next and all are slaughtered.

I have noticed that the Lilly IIb and IIc are very fragile planes for whatever reason. They suffer exceptionally high losses in A2A and against enemy Flak.

They have armor and a high durability but very weak in guns...not sure why they suffer so much.

I think they were slaughtered because there were 200+ Hellcats on CAP and only about 20 fighters escorting[:D]

They are quite a bit slower than the D4Y4 so maybe have longer engagements? Also, at the moment the IJA pilots are mostly just trained in NavB and a bit of NavS whereas the IJN pilots are mostly pre-war pilots and have much better defense and experience.

I send some fighters in at 27,000 feet to bomb his troops approaching Prome. Hope to use up AA flak with some safety and maybe cause some disruption and fatigue amongst some units. Doesn't work well as 10 Ki-43-IV are shot down by flak to score just a few hits[:(].

I get the impression that the game uses the same mechanism for resolving AA against ground attacks as against installation attacks. Even though the troops should be spread out across a wide area. Still, the game penalises the Allies but not allowing for effective low-level attacks by fighter-bombers so it is all just part of the game abstraction.

He has 3 of the Indian Heavy AA Regiments and one AA Brigade so that is probably a lot of guns there.
