Looking at PzB's training program over China, it looks like it is severely reduced. [&o]

Unless the cost to you is much more than I can assess from the combat reports, I don't see how you have much of a choice in not seeing the invasions of Iwo Jima and Bonin through to the end. You need to get bases close enough to the Home Islands to use your heavy bombers. You have taken out KB, so that threat is gone. He has a few BB's and CA's left (how many of them you know of?).

The question is that now that Wake has been taken, how long to repair and upgrade the AF till your heavies can take over the suppression of Iwo and Bonin??

How many more divisions and support troops can you scrap up to land on either one of those islands??

Which island will be priority one?? Once you take one island, the other will fall shortly afterwards![:D]

This battle will determine if you have any chance of doing any significant damage to the Home Islands before '46 gets here.

USN 0
USMC 1600
British 600 (1 x 16 plane Corsair Sqn only)

No other tye is available for use on carriers

Frames

8 Hellcats (144 per month) Most of my fighters but sqn strength is 50% or less
172 F4U1D's (100 per month) - 5 Marine Sqns on CV's and 2 on CVE's and 6 USN Sqns on CV's
722 FM-2 Wildcats (120 per month) - 3 on CV's rest on CVE's
916 NF Hellcats (144 per month [:@]) - 6 Sqns depolyed and in action only CAP and Sweep
532 Corsair IV (80 per month) 1 x 16 plane Sqn
350 Hellcat II (50 per month) - No Sqns
1360 F4U's (150 per month) - 3 Marine Sqns Operational all on CVE's

I have 1 56 plan FM-2 Wing with experienced pilots
and 22 Hellcatsd in a VR wing on Marcus without pilots the others are empty.

Basically the cupboard is bare

Intrepid has full strength sqns and is 15 sys on west coast - Lake Champlain arrives in 20 days and together they will head tot he sound of the guns

The key is to get Marcus to 4 or Wake to 5 and then my Army bombers can keep the AF Suppressed - it will take time but it can be done

Hi.  I have been playing WitP for over 2 years now and following this AAR for quite some time but have never posted in this particular forum.  Mostly play AI or head to head in 44 and 45 scenarios or modded 43,44,45 scenarios.

It seems to me that Japanese production of airframes may actually be about right for the period, however, Allied production is woefully inadequate.  Until bombing kicks in on the HI you can count on Japanese production being about 1500-2000 planes/month; oddly, the same as Allied production...but, I think that one has been pointed out before...

I would say that your looking at about 75% Jap production of fighters in their mix at this time, and your opponent looks pretty sharp plus he has India so I might guess he could be up to 2000 to 2500 fighters/month.

Seems like you are clawing down 200-400 planes/day on average in the Bonin Islands area.  In other words, in about maybe 8 days of fighting you take out his monthly production.  Reading back through your AAR, losses have frequently been up to 500/day for the IJA/IJN.  He has to have eaten pretty heavily into his reserves - agreeing with previous commenter that China training program seems to be less active.

If this is the case, you are making about 1000 CV capable frames/month but maybe only 1/3 the necessary pilots for those frames and in particular you are short Hellcats, but I note you are switching to Corsairs and particularly USMC Corsairs as much as possible which is good.  You also have land based fighter production and Army Air Corps pilots when they get into range.

Ok, all the obvious done.  You are in a serious battle of attrition.  PzB is accepting it and the result is you are both taking heavy losses.  Historically, most armies (nations), even when winning a battle of attrition pulled back early and allowed the other side (smaller and losing) time to regroup and then the process started all over again.

Citing an example from US History - A lot of military historians/analysts like to deride Ulysses Grant from the American Civil War as being wasteful of men, unimaginative, etc versus the more romantic portrayals of Robert E Lee for the South.  However, in the West in 1862/1863 and in Virginia in 1864 through 1865, Grant decided to apply brute force and despite tactical losses and high casualties, knew he would eventually gain the upper hand and continued to attack.  Ultimately, as Lee's veteran troops were replaced and his sources of production (Sherman, et. al.) and supply interdicted, loss ratios evened out and even began to favor the Union, who furthermore, had more mass than the South.  War over.

Right now as a practical matter, I think you have to stay in the fight in the Bonins.  You may see your CV TG's down to 4-6 full strength carriers in a month's time, your repair yards in Pearl and the West Coast will be full, your air reserves will be zero, but, you will have also eroded PzB's air reserves to zero as well.  Then, and I think this time is soon approaching judging by China ops, he will have only his current monthly production to sustain him and you will be in a position to start cutting that down.  He will start to only be able to field smaller airgroups, fragments, etc piecemeal and he will not be able to withdraw from the fight because you will have the ability to hit his HI bases.

So, you have to bring Marcus up to strength to allow P-38/P-51 attacks on the Bonins.  You have to bring Wake up to high enough AF levels to allow B-29, LBA attacks on the Bonins.  Then you have to seize one of the Bonin Islands to kill the other and start hitting his production.

You have cut off his oil supplies, soon you will have Russia in play and will cut off a goodly number of resources as well.  Now you have to hit his a/c production and then you can pretty much go where you want.  His fleet, well, looking at the last few days, has to almost be dead.  I count 15+ Destroyers killed in one day alone.

You may end this down to just a few CVs, BBs, escorts, and fighter groups, but once you have him totally down and attrited, your pressure will not allow him to regain his strength b/c and your strength will continue to grow as your supply sources/replacement sources will not be subject to attack.  Get the Bonins and he has almost no place to hide.

Just my thoughts.  Hate to see you pull out of this now.

donnie very well put !!! thanks

I agree with you I actually doubt the Bonins will ever fall now to many troops to much forts BUT I am breaking his pilot pool as much as he is breaking mine

Give me B29's on Wake and B24J's on Marcus (P38's don't have the range Marcus to Bonin unfortuantely which is why I am using Black Widoes) and I will shut the AF's

In the meantime yes it has cost me but I have destroyed his fleet, damaged the surface threat and killed off large chunks of his airforce I don't like attrition but that doesnt make it doable.

Also what else is now vulnerable ? Okinawa, North Japan I made a mistake going for Iwo I should have waited developed Wake and Marcus and then went in  BUT only one Corps is ashore.....I have many more the Aussies are going for India but I have many full strength Divisons ready to try something else in the meantime I will keep up the pressure on Bonin and Iwo until Marcus hits 4 and the Liberators join the party.

Hey andy havnt posted in awhile but have been following the ARR. Just out of currosity is there a house rule against stacking your fleet CVs with nothing but USMC corsairs? If not how many free USMC sqdns do you have? Can you sit your hellcat sqdns on Pearl in training mode while your USMC Corsairs give it to the PZB? That way the only limiting factor is fleet sys dmg and not frames/pilots

Edit: in reagrds to your comments above andy they will fall if you can attrit his supplies there and stop new supplies from araving. The more eng he has on the islands the more supply it eats up in repair and if he doesnt have enough engs you can bring down the forts with your own

I agree...if you are down to 8 reserve Hellcats and no Navy pilots, then I cannot imagine how putting Marine aircraft on your carriers is in any way more gamey than Chinese pilot training.

Also must say that you need to maintiain the pressure...remember that in a battle of attrition the side that loses is the side that believes it has lost. You are doing fantastic and mostly irreparable damage to PzB at this time. Yes, you are taking heavy losses yourself, but those losses are bearable at this time.

Remember also that when his pool of China trained pilots is dry then his 30 xp pilots will be facing your 35 xp pilots and you still have the better airframes.

As of 1/45 when the allies put Marines in History on carriers I am free from restrictions I am trying to limit myself to 10 Sqns that historically were deployed and I am desperately looking for F4U sqns that have not upgraded to spare the F4U1D pool.

Re stacking there is no agreed HR on this but I have been trying not to have more than 4 USN CV's in one hex but I admit thew last few days I have had as many as 6 as my TF's contract and carriers with damage need to be protected the number has increased

Andy.  All good thoughts.  I agree as well with above that you could be posting low XP pilots versus his low XP pilots at some point.  However, your airframes are 3x as good it appears.  You have to find a way (bases!) to be able to bring your superior Army air (LBA, short range fighters) into play and go after specifically his aircraft production - targetting fighter plants with LBA.  If you can find bases (not carrier!) from which to bring your air forces into play - you will have your own China training command, except it will be operating against the HI!

You have one corps on Iwo.  It has served a purpose at least in wrecking his surface fleet and a lot of his transport assets.  Thoughts of trapping his forces on Iwo by simply leaving them there are good ones.  What are the Bonin Island defenses like?  I noted you hit quite a few mines there.  Do you have any sweeping assets left?  My guess is you might find your limiting asset to be MSW at some point more than anything else.

Getting Marcus and Wake up will help you keep the Bonins supressed which is a necessity for striking deeper into the Empire (Formosa, Okinawa).  Formosa would be a better gambit in my opinion.  More bases - plus land routes which will allow for Japanese retreats.  Okinawa mountains plus only two bases from which to position LBA.  Long supply lines unless you can bring in supplies from Malaya.

Other option appears to be N Japan - Hokkaido.  Only problem there is lots of Japanese militia start to arrive in 1945, even if PzB doesn't have armament points they still come in free at 1/3 strength.

How much lift do you have in the CPac.  How many divisions can you assault land (LS ships) and how many can you follow on with (AP, AK)?  Your already ashore on Iwo, but it is Lvl 9 fort and mountainous.  If you can assault land on Bonin and get about 6-7 divs ashore then transfer the corp from Iwo to Bonin to back it up, that may get you the island.  Then you can thrust to Formosa-Ryukus or north.
Heading straight for Okinawa or Formosa is an interesting thought.

Yup the deep again thrust is making mew think

I have 5 Divisons on trasports at Marcus I have not committed them because I am not sure they will make a difference I could assemble about another 8 or 9 Divisons for an attack without stripping the West

In the West I have about 17 Divs in or about Singapore........ half to India half to SEA overland was the original plan !!!

Bangkok here we come !!!

Ah no 3 Sqns of normal COrsairs (72) are on CVE's I am aiming to have a USMC 5 x CVE Ground Attack Group so I will switch out the 3 Sqns of normal corsairs for FB variants currently on the fleet carriers

I have a further 11 Land Based USMC and 4 RNZF Corsair Sqns but they are in the West 3 of the Marine Sqns are making there way to the front where they will replace the F4U1D's

I want to have 5 USMC Sqns on CVE's in FB's for on call CAS and 5 Sqns in F4U's supporting the carrier hellcats in A/S role
