BTW , if any Threadsters are in the Omaha Nebraska area next saturday we're hosting our 1st annual "Cold War Victory Party". [:D]
Dress is "party like it's 1962....think Madmen". Or come as your favorite Dr. Strangelove character. Blini's vs. Burgers, Stoli vs. Budweiser. AS Yakov Smirnoff used to say "In America you can always find a party , in the USSR the party can always find you".[:D]So don't disappoint the "party" . Let me know if you'll be in the area. [:)][:D]

1962 is a lot more "exotic" to most of the younger folks we know. The late intrest in everything "Madmen", "PanAm", and similar movies and TV shows. And a lot of people think the most dangerous time in the cold war was the Cuban missile crisis. Frankly I think 1973, 1983 and 1986 were just as dangerous, just not well publized.
Also, 1962 was in many ways a more refined era. People wore suits and ties to parties, and behavior was more....well regimented. The people who seem most interested in this party are actually youngsters (20-30 Year olds). For them 1962 is as exotic and far away as 1922 or 1862. I'll probably be the oldest one there , and I do have some memories of the time (I was only five). Everyone else wasn't born. And of course a lot of this parties theme revolves around "DR. Strangelove".

The sidewalks are safe for a few more days. Alex didn't have one of the forms from his school that he needed to bring, so he'll try again this Friday. I still got a half day out of it. [8D]

Good morning! Back from my enforced Star Fleet Universe hiatus to WITP:AE. Had a deadline to meet.
Got down to 39F last night... Lots of plants covered on the way to work this morning. Should be up to 68F and sunny today.

Was 25F. Sunday morning. Stayed cool the whole day. Got some yard work done on Saturday and two turns done that evening. The 1st Filipino Regiment is in San Diego. Feeling a little mean streak in me. Thinking about sending them to the Aluetians.[:'(]

I couldn't agree more. Plus there was "near parity". In different fields, one side or the other would hold an advantage , but overall they cancelled out. And both side got very adept at keeping the "close ones" out of the press. EVERYONE has heard of "The Missiles of October", but how many people realize how close we were in 1973 (Yom Kippur war), 1983 (Able Archer) or 1986 ("Submarine races" or the Pershings in Europe vs. the Soviets moving in shore the large number of SSN's and SSGN's to show their "displeasure"). [:(]

IIRC, in James Mitchner's novel
Texas he talked about something that immigrants to Texas in the 1800s had to learn about the hard way; a weather event that I think he said was referred to as a 'blue norther', where a dry front would come through and the temperature would drop by more than 100F in less than a day.
We're fortunate that weather is relatively stable most of the time. But sometimes it ain't! [:D]
