I guess it happened... So way cool Dixie!

I'm glad I was stood where I was, the band and (especially) the guys by the flag would only have heard the Lanc getting closer and closer and not be able to do anything about it [:D] I think she ended up about 6' away from the flag pole, the two Spitfire pilots thought it was close.

We had another moment today that I'll look back on in years to come when OC BBMF asked who wanted to have a look at Gibson's cigarette case. Worth £20k apparently, it's got his initials engraved in it and the serial number of his Lanc as well as the code words for the night (Nigger and Dinghy). Pretty cool I think.

I'd have liked to have talked with Les Munro or Johnny Johnson last night, not particularly because of the Dambusters but because every vet has something interesting even when they don't think so themselves. Les Munro has actually said he felt uneasy in taking part as his aircraft was damaged and he had to turn back.

Johnson is still with us? I am very pleased to hear this.

<edit>

I must be misunderstanding, as the gentleman I know of by that name has in fact passed.

Anyone up for being filthy rich. It appears that Termi doesn't want to share in his good fortune. So here's the caper.....we smuggle toilet paper into Venezuela. We'll be rolling in it in no time. The Charom Cartel. Capital idea.

Smuggling Charmin? Too much work. I'll settle for the Powerball win this weekend. $600M. True story: I win, I'll fly all THREAD brothers stateside for a party. At Steve's.

He's only half kidding. Saturday at 5:30pm. Let me know if your coming so I can load more beer and booze in the cooler. Theme is Cold War Victory party, dress (if you choose) is 1962 (think Mad Men) or your favorite character from "DR. Strangelove". [:D]

There are three surviving members of the crews who went out on the raid:

Les Munro (pilot)
George 'Johnny' Johnson (bomb aimer)
Fred Sutherland (Rear gunner)

All from different crews iirc.

P.S. Has anyone seen the angry comments on the Daily Mail website because Chris Evans got a flight on the Lancaster? Sometimes I despair for the state of this country. [8|]

What's baffling you? The Daily Mail is a Brit newspaper that basically seems to hate everything. Slightly xenophobic, possibly racist, definitely anti-Europe, I think the only thing they do like is pre 1950s Britain. They tell the middle-class of Britain what they should be outraged at/scared of this week.

Chris Evans is a DJ on Radio 2 who does the Breakfast Show, as part of the 70th anniversary he spoke to some of the BBMF guys and flew on the Lancaster for his show yesterday. Rather predictably the DM are angry about this and so are a lot of the people on the website. "He only got to fly on the Lanc because he's rich and famous" "he shouldn't be getting paid for flying on the Lanc" and "there are more deserving people than him, a normal person should have done it" seem to be the common themes.

He flew on the Lancaster because the BBC were doing a show about the Dambusters and he does the Breakfast Show.
He was getting paid for it because he's on a salary for doing the Breakfast Show which is why he was flying on the Lanc
There probably are more deserving people than him. And I bet that most of the complainers put themselves in that category. If you let one 'normal' person fly on her then everyone will expect to be able to.

I'm in a bad mood today and I feel terrible, so my patience is thin. Sorry for the rant
