RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla

Night fighters aren't really necessary to counter night naval bombing. It's terribly inaccurate.
What's your Strategy?

Mundy: One disconcerting thing is that I got no in-turn cues about mine encounters at Ponape. Several AMs and DMSs took hits and I wasn't aware of it until I opened up Combat Reporter. The report is ambiguous as to whether they took mine hits or the coast artillery lit them up.

Just look at the individual ship info screen and on the right just below the damage list it will say "Last hit by ...." and show the most damaging thing that hit them.
The text says "Most recently hit by" but what I have observed is that it uses the most damaging hit, even if it was days ago when it happened.ORIGINAL: jwolf

Does it show the most damaging hit or merely the most recent?
Edit: Congrats to Mundy for some notable progress lately -- hope you can keep it up!

Just be sure to keep good fighter cover there. Does KS every bomb air bases by night? I have found that bases with many planes are pretty vulnerable to night bombing. Unsurprisingly, night bombing against airbases is a lot more effective than night bombing against moving ships.ORIGINAL: Mundy
I've moved about 480 aircraft there, out of a support capacity of about 550. It is a level 8 field. B-24s at Townsville are in the middle of healing up and upgrading, so I'll move them in later. It's mostly Beaufighters, Beauforts, Mitchells, USN dive bombers and lots of fighters which live there now. Everyone's been moved under 10th RAAF HQ command to lessen any command and control issues.

Can't say I'm much of a fan of using a battleship fleet to guard against this sort of bombardment against forward bases. Just too risky. An IJN destroyer fleet like the one that just hit the air base could really cause problems for a BB fleet if they got lucky and got in close at night if radar fails (which happens far too often). Furthermore, a BB fleet that is in a forward deployment is liable to come under air attack as well. If you ask me, a large Fletcher fleet would be a much better idea here. Fletchers can deal with just about anything the Japanese can throw at you. Might not be able to outright defeat a large IJN SCTF, but simply engaging the fleet and getting it to waste ammo will go a long way to protecting the air base. Save your BBs for bombardments and protecting your CVs, protecting forward air bases is not a role they are well suited for.ORIGINAL: Mundy
KS had tried this about a week earlier, when more PT boats were present. Then, he fought through enough where the bombardment was thwarted. Not so this time. Looking at things after this, the damage turned out much less than what the report indicated, with most of my airpower functional. A battleship group is arriving next turn, and I'll keep them out to deal with these. Alaska, and a dozen more destroyers are also enroute from Roi-Namur. "Ching" Lee is running them.
Only some B-25s are attack bombers. The ones that are not get a bomb load penalty for low level attacks and don't use guns to suppress flak.ORIGINAL: Mundy
I never looked too closely at B-25s, thinking all were pretty much equal at antiship.

In ground attacks against troops or airfields I have found the model with the 8X .50 Cal MGs in the nose (B-25G?) are more effective than the B-25H with the slow-firing cannon. Haven't had the opportunity to use it against ships but a shell like that should be nasty against unarmoured vessels.ORIGINAL: Capt. Harlock

Hint: the models with a 75mm gun in the nose tend to have an edge. [;)]

TBH it isn't the guns that are as important as flying with a full bombload. That being being said, I'm not sure which gun arrangement is better in game. I can't say my attack bombers have flown enough LowN missions to really get a good idea on this. I've definitely seen the .50 cals suppressing flak and maybe even starting light fires on a few occassions but I've never seen a B-25G with their 75mm cannons hitting a ship before because I haven't used that model enough in that role. Would love to see a combat report of a 75mm canon hitting a Japanese merchant ship to see how much damage it could do. If someone has one, could you post it here?ORIGINAL: Mundy
I had read that the 75mm wasn't as popular. Basically, pilots could only get off 2-3 shots with it per run, rather than hosing down the target with .50 fire.
