I was wondering if they were bound for Wewak, but the strikes spotted about 12,000 troops at Manus, so it looks like KS is trying to build up that base a bit.

I was getting these reports for the last day. An apparent strike with no real action, until I realized that he's dropping mines on my port. Three AMs are enroute right now.

My LRCAP over Cooktown shows up during his mining raids, but there's no real encounter as a result. I don't know if I need a base with a radar to effect an interception or not. My minesweepers there have probably pulled out 100 mines by now. I did lose one of them, and I sent another group over.

After a short break, antishipping strikes hit Manus again. He's basing fighters there now, from the looks of it, with LRCAP probably adding more. I've taken the SBDs off their external tanks for now.

Supply at Pearl is an issue right now. Despite about 280k in supply, I still have a yellow exclamation mark there. Probably because I have twice the stacking limit parked there right now. I'm moving a bunch of troops to Nauru, west of the Gilberts. Some combat troops are along, in case it's occupied. High capacity islands are hard to come by right now. I'm looking forward to taking the Philippines just to ease my overpopulation situation.

Why are you trying to take Howrah anyways? Even if you're still planning on taking Calcutta, Howrah seems like a side show. Too much blood spilled for an insignificant base. Japan is really making you bleed in eastern India...

Well you'd have to take Marianas to move on to the Philippines. That's a long ways away. Probably should look into more alternatives for staging bases in the meantime.

Howrah's right next door and I don't have to cross a river to get in. Either way, he can easily reinforce one from the other, so it's a horse apiece. I'll hold for now. Keeping a good chunk of the IJAAF there just helps me elsewhere.

For my next move, I have troops bunched at Ponape and Kusaie. Both are well supplied, plus I have over 200k at Roi-Namur. Amphibs are already prepositioned at both, along with at least 60 rocket ships. This should kick off within a week or two. Truk only has fighters based there right now. There and the previous two islands will serve as staging points for my move on the Marianas. I'm hoping to take Luzon by end of year. I have ARs and ARDs at Ponape and Kusaie and Roi-Namur, so I can quickly move them forward.

19 February 1945

A couple of TFs are sighted SSW of Calcutta, heading in that direction. One shows a single AM, while the other is unknown. Not sure what he's sending up, but my planes are ready. No fighters are present, but I'll sweep in case he surges them in.

At Cooktown, A division and a bunch of base troops and supply are loading up for Lae. It appears nobody's there, but I'll bring troops just in case. 18 CVEs will escort in case aircraft at Manus try to interfere. I'll probably have to deal with that island next, unless I can isolate it. He's got about 40,000 troops there right now, plus a bunch of combat planes. I don't know if Manus can interfere if I move on westwards towards Wewak and the like. Other troops are prepping for Buna, but maybe I can simply starve them. Once Lae is mine, there's no way he'll be able to run ships there. Milne's sealing that off as well.

Milne Bay finally has an airbase and port, so I moved two squadrons of Spitfires and one of Beaufighters there. I kept the Beaus' range a couple hexes short of Rabaul, so they don't get into trouble. I'll probably start sweeping there pretty soon and maybe pound the airfield eventually.

I'm probably 10-14 days from Kicking off the landings at Truk. Shangri-La will arrive in time to join all my other carriers there. This will be big, and I'm bringing lots of ships to pound the beaches. I had excellent results with them last time, so hopefully that continues.

Probably a good idea to grab a number of bases 10-12 hexes from Rabaul. To win the air war you're going to need a lot of sweeping fighters and its too risky to put them all in one base.

Pretty much my plan at this point. Manus will have to be dealt with also. I need another base up there to stash fighters sitting in Australia. I want my heavy bombers move up also.

Lae invaders are proceeding, about three hexes SW of Milne now. I'm not too worried about air attack, with nearly 400 fighters along on the CVEs. 18 of them are along. Two more are escorting more base forces to Milne.

I grabbed Nauru this turn. Another island to stash troops on. Losses were pretty heavy as I did this on the fly without proper prepping. One base unit was there and they were quickly killed.

KS has some cruisers and such lingering about 7 hexes south of Calcutta. Not sure why my planes aren't flying out to hit them. Richelieu, two CLs and about 20 destroyers are sortieing out from Madras to try and catch them. We'll see.

Lae's invaders will land tomorrow night. I have enough base units along to get the base up and running.

Warships have arrived at Ponape. Some, like California need about 8 days to repair sys damage. At that point, I'll kick off the invasion of Truk. Troops at Kusaie will load up a few days before this so as to rendezvous with the Ponape forces. Onwards from there.

I've had turns where Yamato has been seen at four different bases at once. Everyone has Yamato on the brain.

I wouldn't delay an invasion because of sys damage to an old battleship. At this point you can't afford to delay invasions because of minor things like that. Also, KS might catch wind of your plans keeping big fleets with patrol plane range.

I've moved all my carrier fighters up to max altitude for next turn. Also, two squadrons of Stangs and one of Spitfires have transferred over, for extra muscle.

At Kusaie and Ponape, invaders are loading up for their move. Lots of ships are going with this one. The amphibs are split into about 5 different groups. I made sure some of them were landing ship TFs to get to odd rocket ships included. 15 CVs and 4 CVLs will provide overall cover, with another three CVEs tagging along. I also have about 3-4 groups each of ASW and Anti-mine groups. Surface forces under Alaska will guard against the surface threat. My second CV won't make the party, as she's still enroute from Pearl. 5+ divisions are involved with at least that many armored battalions. This will all be babysat by an amphibious force HQ, to minimize unloading casualties.

If I pull this off, things will get uncomfortable for him south of here.

I've had ups and downs with Richelieu. I got careless and went too far east, where she ate a couple of air launched torpedoes. The next day, I met his cruiser force. It's amazing when I outnumber him 2-1 that he seems to have twice as many shots as me.

For the coordinate challenge, this is three hexes NE of Manus and 6 hexes NW of Kavieng. They've moved NE from there as the pic shows. I guess I know where KB is. We'll see if he still want's to play with them. I think the captain of Triton has earned the MoH with an oak leaf cluster.

My transports at Ponape went SE to rendezvous with the other group and they're now near Ponape.

He's still sweeping Lae, but I had my guys landed and training. I moved an Australian PBY unit there to help keep track of KB, though they're already near max range. I've maxed the range of the search planes at Ponape, so I'll probably still have coverage.

It's going to get interesting, I think.

I think rate of fire is partly tied to crew experience, so the IJN cruisers and DDs with their 70+ crew experience really pump out the shells. In 1942 they have about twice the rate of fire against Allied cruisers but that really should diminish as newer ships come in and crews get some experience to partly catch up with the IJN.

03 March 1945

After hanging by Ponape, waiting for the stragglers, the invaders are now heading for Truk. They should arrive inside a week.

After lots of thinking, I didn't go charging my carriers off to catch his. Odds are, they'd just park next to Truk where it's extra 200 fighters would help cover them. That's about all that's based there right now. I am wary of leaving my transports and having him surge some bombers in. I figure I'm carrying at least 900 fighters on all my ships. I've re-organized to where each CV is carrying two fighter squadrons. A VF and a VFB.

I'm getting transports forward based to Roi-Namur, to help keep new bases supplied from there. No matter what, it's still all about logistics.

I was looking at Triton's skipper to see how she breezed pass the escorts without shooting at them instead. Naval skill and aggression are both in the 70s there. I thought maybe a lower aggression value lets them go through the escorts better, but I guess not. Pure luck, I guess.

KS has some surfaces parked in the hex NW of Truk. Can't tell if carriers are present or not. I may start sweeping from Ponape to work on them a bit. I've a few months yet until the 47N shows up, and I'm eagerly awaiting them. P-80s should seal the deal. I'm also eagerly awaiting cutting the Russians loose in August. Troop count at Truk right now is about 34,000. With all the planes there, a good amount of them are probably base forces.

I also think crossing your "T", masked many of your guns and allowed the maximum number of Japanese guns to bear, which may account for being out shot.

I think that's your problem.

Honestly, Japanese CAs are just beastly and so difficult to beat in surface engagements even when they don't get the tactical advantage like that. The result of the battle was exactly in line with my experience.
