The great IJN sub massacre of Oct 7th leaves the IJN short five subs. All others will now head back in for a bit. A defensive posture will be adopted everywhere.

The minelaying run to Para was interrupted, so I have to redirect and send them back in. I've got some there but now want to drop as many as possible into the Kuriles.

The Allies took a day off of the bombing runs to Para and other Kuriles air bases, but the P-38L sweep that did arrive did extremely poorly again the low CAP at Para. Almost 30 P-38s lost on the day! [&o]

The Allies go big at Paramushiro on the 8th. The direct approach does work this time, but he again loses a dozen or so 4Es on the day. The Japanese though will have to pull back after most surviving CAP are grounded for maintenance.

It seems certain there is a plan to invade the Kuriles. The Allies are only reconning a few HI bases and have every Kurile base from Etorofu out lit up and well observed. The persistent bombing can only mean an effort to suppress possible fort building and destruction of supply. I feel that even the base stuck at level 5 forts will give a good account of itself, and there is still a possibility of getting up to 6. Paramushiro is very close to forts 7 but needs about 5-7 days without air strikes to get there. Not sure it'll happen.

Although it can get the bombers through, as in this case, the use of the best Allied airframes as escorts has also led to their pools being hugely reduced. It'll mean he will get through to some industry eventually though, so I have to try to take out as many as possible before the strat bombing starts in earnest again.

The 9th brings big sweeps over the Kuriles. Only Ketoi Jima is hit though, and only by 6 Libs for a few runway hits and one downed 4E. [:)]

On the day the Allies lose 5 4E and 3 2E, which has become about standard with the big bombing runs on troops in Burma and the Kuriles bombings. That steady bleed will certainly have an affects it just about equals overall production at this point.

The two very slow repairing Sam R & D factories have finally shot forward. Only (2) 28 now on the one still yet to start producing, and after that the plane will move quickly toward production. I'll probably have it in 3/45 now. The sucks, but it's better than I'd thought considering the factories still both had (10) 20 about a month ago.

The Frank "r" is predicted for 11/44. Only a few more weeks! [&o]

Something new today! Another attempt at Marcus Island! Invasions here have been some of the most devastating for the Allies throughout the game. This looks like the third attempt, if indeed the allies stop here.

I had some Jakes on low naval strike here and they hit one APA and two LSI. That should add to the disruption of forces at the least, and might even sink these. I'll move some Judy D4Y1 in to Pagan, which could just barely reach Marcus at range 18. I don't see any CV/CVE in the search rollovers here.

So, the Allies are going for Marcus, they're ready to pounce in the North, they're squeezing Burma as tightly as possible, and throwing all of the available airforces at the Japanese positions everywhere. I need a few good days to slow the deluge, but he's been good at keeping pressure up. Sometimes at the expense of his forces for a day, but he does know the higher service level of Japanese planes reduces their operational availability.

I'll keep trying to conserve forces for the next big landings, and get some CAP traps or other surprise appearances ready.

The Okinoshima takes two fish from the Tullibee but still, amazingly, is operational. I'll drop these mines at Para, assuming she doesn't get sunk on the way, and load up more and keep dropping as long as the pool and/or ship lasts. [;)]

The Allies jump right in at Marcus. They don't bring any BBs (or haven't used them yet) and have only a few cruisers here to offer fire support. They did have some LCI(G) and one SNLF unit suffered as a result of those, but other units were untouched.

The Judys do fly and get to the amphibs, but only land 2 x 250kg bombs on APA Clay. One down though at least. Hellcats appear out of somewhere, but not many, and this looks like one CVE lurking somewhere. The KB might have been able to streak down for tomorrow, but I think the risk of a sub hit would outweigh the gain. I do have a few ships on the way though. [:)]

In the end they get a pretty poor result for dropping an entire Aussie Engineer Corps, a tank battalion and a Marine regiment on here. Marcus Island!![&o]

This is the image today of Marcus. The red TF moving in is Ashigara and Tone, fresh out of the repair yards. They sprinted from Yokohama, and will try to get in amongst the APA/AKA here to do some damage. Not much, but it's a try anyway.

The night begins with some say pickings. As usual Dan has pickets out. He is meticulous about those, and I'd hoped the previous days some of the Judys and Jakes would take a few out, but they didn't go for the small fry.

Next up are two DEs. This, surprisingly, is the fateful trying point of the night. As in the war, the USN just has better equipment at this stage of the game. The battle starts in close at 5k yards, close enough that the DEs launch torpedoes and immediately get a hit on Ashigara. This is the decisive hit in the series of battles that come next, even though both DEs are sunk and the cruisers continue on in.

They find a Commenwealth cruiser TF next, one that would earlier in the war be overwhelmed by two IJN CAs. Not at this point.

The IJN fights a good battle, likely sinking the Caradoc, but also takes some hits. The DDs are left burning and the cruiser damaged enough to retire before getting to the transports. Damn.

I'd set a bunch of Es to patrol the retreat lanes out of Marcus in the hope of clearing a path between Allied sub patrols. They met with the subs alright, but the Flasher sinks two Es before taking some damage herself. Another TF sinks the Aspro, but ...

... on the way out the Tone is hit with one fish by Robalo.

The Allies throw some DDs forward, which could have been excellent CAP traps. No Allied CAP showed up though, and after severe flak losses and a bunch of misses, the IJN DBs finally get in some hits. Most were 250kg bombs, but they also got a couple of 500kg hits form Judys, maybe even one 800kg hit, so a few could go down. Not quite sure what happened here and why those were there.
