No, I do not even eat pickled herring and that is almost the national dish in Sweden. Eaten at almost every holiday. Surströmming, on the other hand, is not eaten by most Swedes. Although, you are right in that some Swedes like it very much indeed.

In April 2006, several major airlines (such as Air France, British Airways, Finnair, and KLM) banned Surströmming, claiming that the pressurised cans of fish are potentially explosive. The sale of the fish was subsequently discontinued at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. I always did like pickled herring. Some people have said that pickled Northern Pike is better but I have never had it that way. But it is better to eat the smaller pike which is less than 2.7 kgs or 5 pounds plus the pike are better from cold water. I have never had codfish (lutefisk) boards either.

The Swedish word gift literarily means poison when translated into English.

I checked it in google translate and apparently "gift" in Swedish also means married. So yes, I guess that married and poison should go together in Sweden. Where my paternal grandparents come from, they do not mean the same. The word "poison" would be "strup" and married would be "poročena" which are not the same. My father sometimes referred to me as "hudič" which was not necessarily polite!
