Mk stands for Mark, and that's an English word, not a German one. I'll let this go, because there's no point in beating on this horse (or Panzer, as the case may be).

Please show me a German reference that uses the word Mark or abbreviation Mk. I have never, ever, ever, ever seen it in German. I've seen plenty of English references use it, but not a German one. It should be Pz. Kpfw IV Ausf. H.

one hassle is this is not a German game, it is a English version

as I have already said, I am willing to go with either name

to be honest, I am thinking of changeing it to Pz.Kpfw Mk III, just to get a new string going

It's a question of immersion... For me, at least...

okay for what it is worth for right now, the name is Pz.Kpfw.IV

unless I can work out a way to bring more tanks into the units, don't see a reason to make a model or make letter to it

Pz.Kpfw. IV is the official German Version. You might also hear the colloquial "Panzer IV" (or Pz. IV), Panzer being the common German word for Tank. If you´re being grognard, you might also call the vehicle Sd.Kfz 161(=Sonderkraftfahrzeug, literally "Special Motor Vehicle"; practically all vehicles specially produced for the German Armed Forces had a Sd.Kfz number, from artillery tractors to tanks, armoured cars, self-propelled guns etc). But I digress slightly. "Mk IV" is British in origin, a short-hand designation. They couldn´t keep up with all the versions, so they called all the upgunned versions from the Ausf. F2 onwards just Mk.IV Special.

You´re right, there is no reason why the game should identify every single sub-variant of every German tank, there were dozens. Just call them Pz.II, III, IV.

Why did you put in the Mk into the PzKfw designation ??
Just curious.

BTW: Did you get rid of that annoying recon bug when all adjacent a/c would start chasing a plane they could never catch ???

I am at a bit of a loss on this one

why ?

Panzerkampfwagen (Pzkpfw.) -- armored fighting vehicle; usually a reference to a type of tank.

Mk IV means the 4th model of tank built ???

Myself, i think it's a neat enhancement, much preferred to the bland "AFV destroyed" Your a spectator in this wargame as much as a participant and it's nice to see the boys in action. If the issue is "FOW" well what ground commander are you going to tip off? (psst.....Hey, Patton.....com'ere. 12th SS is down Two Pz-Kmpf IV-H.....ATTACK NOW!!!")

Patton: "Hell no.....take out a few more Pz-Kmpf VIe's first.....then come talk to me."

Ah.....well, i've seen alot of references to it but i assume your wanting to see it in a "technical manual"

Thank you Nik

that was the idea behind it

one thing, I am not going to be putting stuff in, that I do not have some background for it
and most times, none of them are going to agree with each other

LOL, yea, I could used the other name for it, but figured how many people would know the difference between the Sd Kfz 161/2 vs the Sd Kfz 161/1

overall, if anything, I would rather go with Pz.Kpfw.IV then Pz.IV

The most comon used name in both english an german is Panzer III, Panzer IV , Panzer V (or just Panther), Panzer VI (or just Tiger) etc. No need to go much in detail with different versions (Ausführungen in german or short Ausf.), it's also somewhat hard to tell from a fast flying plane what version of what tank has been hit.

50 mm PaK 38/KwK39 is a 50 mm L/60 gun, the L/42 gun was the early, shorter version used in Panzer III from late Ausf.F to Ausf. J until late 1941, then they switched to the longer L/60 gun. The Panzer IV used the L/60 in some (or only one?) prototypes based on Ausf.D chassis.

I reckon if you're reporting to the Allied player you should use the Allied designations, and German ones when reportign to hte German player.

And pretty much every tank should be reported to the allies as a Tiger!!  Seriously - especially Mk IV's, since they resember a riger much more thsan the Panther - which has slopped armour.

If you want to be historically you have to make a list of names like Pz. V, Pzkwg V, Mk V, Panther, Pz.Kpfw.V and so on and than randomly each time randomly assigne in of these names to the mesage as they used different names everywhere. While the names where theoretically standardized, every clerk writing reports used the name or abbreviation he liked best. [;)]
For the game just use something short, "Pz V", "Mk V" or "Panther" are much better to read on the reports than "Pz.Kpfw.V Panther". Just make sure that this name is used everywhere.
