Burma - On Jan 28 our forces laid seige to the base at Taung Gyi on the same day paratroop forces seized the rail junction at Meiktila. On Jan 29 Taung Gyi was assaulted and captured. Air Transport Command performed heroic duty in the following days bringing reinforcements to Meiktila to fend off a violent counter attack by British/Commonwealth forces advancing from the south. Rangoon remains in British control.

Borneo - Most of Western Borneo has been occupied. On the east coast of the island the oil fields and anchorage of Tarakan have been seized. In a daring assault our paratroop forces seized the vital airfield at Bandjermasin within the past week.

Hong Kong - Hong Kong was liberated on December 25 (Tokyo Time)

Philippines - Luzon - Manila and Bataan are under seige. Neither location should hold out for much longer. Mindanao - Most of the island has been captured. However resistance at Cagayan was stronger than anticipated and the defenders continue to hold.

Eastern East Indies - The island of Timor has been captured, all of the bases on the island have been occupied however there is an isolated pocket of resistance in the eastern hills. On Celebes - Macassar, Kendari and Manado have been captured. Our progress remains steady.

South Pacific - The port of Rabaul has been occupied and additional forces continue to stream into the area. In addition the anchorage at Shortlands Island is being developed. A number of airstrips along the North coast of New guinea have also been occupied and are undergoing improvement.

Central Pacific - for the first time since the start of the conflict an American aircraft carrier was spotted by our units on Kwajalein. The Americans launched an air raid on the anchorage at the important base. Our forces responded with zeal and managed to inflict damage on the American Task Force. Reports attached:

For the next 10 days a viscious struggle for control of the air around Java ensued.

Followed by airborne and seaborne assaults on Madioen, Malang, Djokarta and Kragen. All except Madioen are currently under Japanese control.

Spence has been very aggressive with the Chinese...here is the current dogfight.

In a bold move a British task force containing the CV's Formidable and Indomitable appeared 180 miles south of Djokjakarta. The Task Force did not go unspotted and the Japanese Distant Cover Force containing the CVL's Zuiho and Ryujo responded and moved to engage the Task Force. Simultaneous strikes were launched by both sides.

Unfortunately neither Japanese CVL survived the day [:(]...On the plus side I now know where the British CV's are and I know one of them has four fish in her side...[8|]

Shame on me for rushing the invasion of Java. Things certainly could have been different had I brought a base force with me to Djokjakarta.

My one complaint about the CHS map - Mountains at Cagayan

This siege has been going on for well over a month and involves two Brigades, one SNLF , one Naval Guard unit, an HQ and most recently an Engineer Regiment.

Historically the battle lasted a week and involved the Kawamura Detachment vs. 103rd regiment of the 102nd (PA)Division 62nd (PA), 93rd(PA) and the 81st and 61st Artillery plus the Mindanao Force. The Kawamura Detachment Was the HQ of the 9th Infantry Brigade and the 41st Infantry Regiment.

I sorta share his pain[:D]...I haven't found a really good map of the part of Mindanao near Cagayan but in a 60 mile hex that part of Mindanao appears to contain some pretty militarily significant mountains. From the map that I have, I really don't see how two divisions could take full advantage of the mountains to maintain a perimeter around Cagayan though. In this particular game I will say that while the option remained available (pretty much through Dec) I shipped in a lot of supply from the surrounding islands. For a time there was over 10000 supply.

Treespider's initial assault wasn't powerful enough though and his reinforcements have been incremental rather than quantum so I kinda think his assaults have worn down his offensive power even as it increased the experience of my troops. But even as I say this I can see that the end is not that far off for the gallant defenders of liberty and justice.

Well we've sorta been neglecting this AAR for a good week or so now. We're up to March 11th, 1942. Here's an update in no particular order:

Cagayan finally fell and the garrison surrendered.

Soerbaya fell a couple of days later followed by Tjilitjap. The initial Japanese attacks on Batavia and Bandoeng were repulsed. But with reinforcements from 2nd Div the forts at Batavia are down to 2 now and the next attack is likely to overrun the place. Bandoeng has continued to repulse Japanese attacks.

Northwestern Sumatra has been completely overrun and most of the Allied forces there wiped out. A small force retreated from Banhka into the swamps. Paratroop drops by small contingents of Japanese have taken several ungarrisoned and minor bases in central Sumatra. Japanese forces (Imp Gd Div) began landing at Palembang 3 days ago and have taken a drubbing from shore batteries, submarines and occasional raids by TIV bombers still based on Java. Most of the Japanese division is ashore now and should overwhelm the small garrison in fairly short order once it gets organized.

In the Indian ocean another and indecisive carrier clash took place between British CVs and the Baby KB (or shall I say "Fetus KB" [:D]. No damage was inflicted on the Japanese carriers this time though their strike aircraft suffered heavy loss. Minor damage was incurred by HMS Formidable.

Meanwhile in Burma Rangoon finally fell but most of the garrison escaped to the Northwest. Japanese forces have come under increasing bombardment from Allied planes based in India. Mandalay and Lashio remain in the hands of the British and Chinese respectively. The Allied base at Port Blair in the Andaman Islands has attracted considerable notice from Japanese Army and Navy Air Forces in the region and fierce air battles have raged over the airfield there for a number of days with heavy losses to both sides. A Dutch Minelayer was sunk by a Japanese submarine near the islands. Bombers from Port Blair successfully attacked a Japanese convoy returning from their base at Moulmein damaging several ships.

In the Central Pacific several Japanese auxilliary cruisers have struck at a number of unescorted convoys damaging half a dozen or so freighters and tankers. One of these "cruisers" was located by carrier aircraft and subsequently sunk NE of the Hawaiian Islands.

RW events have slowed our pace ...but here is another quick update.

Turn 99 was just forwarded last night...

In the SRA - Bandoeng is the last Allied base in Java and it is steadily being reduced. On Sumatra the last two remaining Allied bases are Benkolen and Padang along the south coast. Benkolen is under siege.

In the Phillipines - Manila contiues to hold out. However I believe they are out of supply. Ioloio and three other allied bases in the central Philippines are next.

In the South Pacific - Most of the Solomons and Papua, NG are in Japanese control. Port Moresby is the last holdout in New Guinea.

In China - I finally have my hands around the Chinese dragon and have started to force the Chinese back on several fronts. Spence moved seven corps into Ichang early and has been bombarding the base ever since. I finally have forces in position and have cleared the area around Sinyang and Hankow. I now have several divisions advancing on Nanyang. In addition in the triangle between Nanchang, Amoy and Shanghai I have pocketed about 10 corps in and around Pucheng. This is coupled with a drive from Nanchang toward Changsha.Hopefully when I reach Changsha and Nanyang the pressure at Ichang will be relieved. Nanyang may also force Spence to fall back from Homan.

In Burma - Mandalay is under siege. As my forces infiltrate in and around the Allied bases in Burma I have been subjected to a steady stream of ground attacks by B-17's flying out of Calcutta/Dacca. I haven't really decided to contest the skies over Burma and have instead focussed my Air forces attention to reducing Port Blair. Current recon indicates roughly 17,000 men and some vehicles there although I suspect it is primarily base forces.

Now that they're all safe and sound I can reveal that the last encounter between the RN carriers and the rather scrawny Baby KB was occasioned by the passage of the 7th Australian Division from the Middle East to OZ. Though Formidable ate a torpedo the damage was surprisingly light. The combo of Hosho, Shoho and Taiyo would seem to be a one shot weapon (win, lose or draw). The intel screen indicated that only 8 or so bombers were lost but I guess inclusion of the damaged ones apparently rendered the whole force hors de combat since he retreated away from my vulnerable convoys and although Formidable & Co hung around there was no second day of battle.

The battle for Port Moresby has started. The South Seas Detachment landed (iirc it is March 17, 1942). In a last minute attempt to provide Air support Spence flew some A-24's into the base. However between the bombadment task force parked off-shore and daily attacks from the air the airfield must not be usable as none of his planes flew. The initial bombardment by Allied forces at the base seems to indicate that Spence does not plan to contest Port Moresby.

In addition Japanese forces simultaneously invaded Thursday Island, but have yet to launch an attack.

In other news Bandoeng finally fell , leaving Java solely in Japanese hands.

In China as I suspected the day after my previous post the pressure on Ichnag was somewhat relieved as 4 Chinese corps moved off towards Changsha. In addition, the forces around Honan are shifting position.

Two days after my previous graphic, Manila surrendered...on 3/21/42. The remaining Allied bases in the SRA/Philippines are now Iloilo, Cebu, Tacloban and Padang on Sumatra.

Port Moresby is under siege by the South Seas Detachment, 51st Mixed and a couple of SNLF's. The defenses appear relatively weak.

Japanese units have landed on Attu.

A Japanese destroyer was sunk when the TF it was part of ventured too close to Port Blair after making a delivery to Rangoon.

In the East Pacific a Japanese AMC intercepted two unescorted Allied AK's 180 miles due west of the opening to the second from the bottom channel to Panama. One of the AK's was pummeled and will likely sink. (and no, I have no intention of entering the channel)

And finally.... in a pleasant surprise...remember back in February when Spence ambushed me and sunk the Zuiho and Ryujo? I have discovered some flotsam that washed ashore in the Indian Ocean which indicated that the British carrier Indomitable was sunk from the damage incurred in that exchange.

It seems that the official Japanese communique forgot to mention the glorious invasion of Australia. Some highlights follow.

The Port Blair Campaign!!!

Details of the three week campaign to reduce the Allied 'fortress' of Port Blair.

Our game will be in hiatus for the next three weeks as Spence is on holiday in the Old Country. In the meantime, I will try to update the progress of the war to date.

The Port Blair Campaign....

After a sustained yet intermittent air campaign against Port Blair the Japanese High Command decided it was time to occupy the base. Allied aircraft had sunk a number of Japanese vessels that strayed off-course after making deliveries to Rangoon and were enroute back to Singapore.

Ever since the fall of Palembang and Singapore the 5th ID and 4th Engineer Regiment had begun prepping for the the invasion of Port Blair. While the prep was taking place aircraft flying from Rangoon and Victoria point had been bombing the airfield.

Port Blair continued...

Shortly after the start of April, Combined Fleet ordered a preparatory bombardment to be conducted by the CA's Myoko and Mikuma. The bombardment TF went in on April 6 and shortly blundered into a minefield. The cruisers however were able to inflict significant damage on the airfield,
