I vote in favor of some improvement in Jap night-fighting capacity in 1942. Tassafaronga was extreme but illustrated a consistent advantage of the Japanese. As compared to actual results I would say that the Long Lance is not superior enough and there is no modeling of the effect that even when USN ships used radar properly they hit the larger ships and ignored the destroyers.

It appears that many USN commanders needed to learn a few tactics from their Japanese counterparts? Actually, if you do look at the numbers, most USN TF commanders only have a 4 or 5 when it comes to surface combat, with many IJN commanders averaging 6+. The IJN commanders are also more aggressive, on average, than their American counterparts.
Possibly if someone wants to tinker with either a few early USN commanders, and/or a few early IJN commanders possibly some results could be 'more historic'? Remember, if we 'dumb' down some USN commanders, experience in combat will eventually raise their skills up, so, it isn't permanent (plus many later war commanders should remain very competent).
