ORINAL: golden delicious...I dunno. Maybe I'm referring to the fact that the Philippines actually has a relatively modern economy, making the country significantly wealthier than comparable states such as Indonesia (without the latter's oil).

I suppose this is America's fault. After all, they really cut down on child mortality, allowing the population to explode, driving up the cost of food whilst reducing the cost of labour. I guess they really must be evil. How dare they prevent all those babies from dying?

I suppose this is America's fault. After all, they really cut down on child mortality, allowing the population to explode, driving up the cost of food whilst reducing the cost of labour. I guess they really must be evil. How dare they prevent all those babies from dying?

..come on Ben, the place is smaller than England+ Wales, was their only colony and the roads, telephone and the rest stopped at the US bases, after that nothing. We, the English, did at least leave our ex-colonies in a reasonable state, even those over-run by the Japanes, and did our best to ensure that ongoing level of civilisation. The US continued after nominal independance with it's previous methods and attitude, a nausious mix of the miltary and agri-business, and when they were finally asked to stop using the place to park their battleships and planes, they did a real Violet-Elizabeth Bott , stamped their tiny foot and took everything, bat, ball, funding and dockside cranes home with them, where as we, when asked to give back Hong-King did, intact..

..or, a functioning education system was in place across the Indian subcontinent before we left, it took little to expand it, it wasn't till the mid 70's under Marcos, well after nominal independance that schools arrived in the major country-side barrios on Mindanao, and some 10 years after that before they got as far as the tribal lands, where i live..

..as to the US-vaccination, it created a situation where such ideas were not allowed to be talked about, let alone develop leaving a very lop-sided, rich-only ex-dollar funded ruling system..btw, how's Tony Blair, still trying to marry socialism with anything he can think of ?

..i thank God that now i see EU flags on EU funded projects, boring basic stuff, like roads, sewerage etc that should have been there in 1945, but these at least get done, however i still weep, albeit privately, when i have to teach the basics of soil fertilisation to people, younger than me, and at least as intelligent, for whom, given their rural background, it should be second nature..

Nonsense. Cutting infant mortality may not be space age- but it requires a fundamental change both in social policy and the understanding of disease.

To be fair, they were only in charge for forty years, and about half of that they were fighting a major guerrilla, whilst the other half they were trying to transfer power to the natives. Furthermore, whilst it may be the size of England and Wales, it has rather more impressive mountains and jungles, not to mention being an archipelago rather than a single mass. I imagine that most movement was done by water- hence the lack of roads.

Well we had agreed to do so well in advance (though we were actually given the island, and only leased the mainland portion, but never mind).

Anyway, obviously compared with the British Empire, any colonial power is going to look bad. However you might consider the effects of the Marshal Plan and the Japanese and South Korean recovery as the American legacy.

..however Mindanao is also an American legacy, perhaps the only real one, after all the other's had other nations involved, even during the US silliness in Vietnam, the Phils were a purely US concern..so why do we have to pick up the bits ?..i thought they were the only Super-Power and us Euro types were past-it nations...
