I've also had this problem with McAfee in the past, and I gave up using Symantec stuff years ago, so I've never had it installed on my current computer. I use ZoneAlarm Security Suite, which seems to work OK although it requires some attention from time to time: you can't just install it and forget about it.
Our company stopped using McAfee's Symantec because of all the problem, and previous to that they stopped using Norton. I have to check and see what we are using now on our compooters.
For my own personal compooter I am starting to use some of the suggestions posted here.
