What you may be talking about is wireless internet. It has coverage similar to cell phone in some areas, but you can get speeds on par with slower DSL. I believe the cost is about the same as cable internet.

We live in a small town on the fringe of the Portland, OR area. There is a wireless provider in town. I've heard coverage is spotty because of all the hills around here. A friend looked into it and he said they were kind of flaky, but he's also kind of pessimist to begin with. I loath the local cable company, but we have cable internet. The download speeds are terrific, but the upload speeds are only a couple of times dial up speed. It can take a while to send an e-mail with an attachment, or upload data to my website.
