Likewise.  Surprising what you can miss.  I guess I must have tried it with irregulars at some stage (which does make sense) and was then over-taken by Redcoat-blindness!

"Cautious advance," "movement to contact," or simply "probe," one of several movement "postures" available in HttR. According to its manual, probe is just like attack except that the thresholds for aggression and losses are lower, giving a higher probability that the force will break-off its attack when met w/serious opposition, i.e., anything considerably bigger than thumbelina!

But back to BoA: After getting my hat handed to me once again -- after all the great work Pocus has done fine tuning the AI -- I'm having better luck as the Colonials in the Alt. scenario. However, the game has become frustrating; I occupy a fort in defensive posture and get hit x2 w/overwhelming force by the Brit AI, which despite suffering terrible casualties on its first forray, somehow manages to muster itself and attack again in the same turn, shattering what's left of my defenders. I have lost many generals in this manner, including Washington, who apparently doesn't get replaced with another overall Colonial c-in-c.

Most times, trying to retreat from this precarious postion in passive posture and forced march only gets me whacked outside my defenses. Whatever happened to "skirmishing" abilities.

If this keeps up, I'm going to refer to BoA as SoA: "Stillbirth of America"

"In the same turn" Each turn represents a month so several attacks seem fine in that period of time, why is this a problem?

Retreating from a besieged fort - I don't think this move is to be recommended!

Realistically, it isn't a problem, but game-wise I don't get reinforced more than once per month, and then only if I'm lucky and/or in passive posture.

sometime the AI prefers to no synch her forces, ie one arrives and get mauled, and then the second force arrives and finish the job. In some rare circumstances (the first force still being in the region), it is even possible to get back the first force into fight.

Red: assault: same as orange posture (offensive) but you also assault towns you encounter.

About this 5% rule, there is a trick that you can do: use cavalry or irregulars in advance of your army, to convert to 5% of military control, so that in the same turn (but some days later) your main army can enter in defensive and establish itself in the small amount of land controlled.

Ok, this would be like a Cavalry vanguard doing some reco for the main army corp.
Fair enough.

However, why don't you give more difference between assault and attack stance?

I would imagine that an army with assault stance would get some malus in range fight but woudl get a bonus in close quarter. This would simulate an army boldly charging the ennemy lines (thus the two stance effects would be different even in open field battles).

Thoughts?

It's not that rare under 1.11b. In fact, this happens to me often; a smaller army -- 2-4 regiments -- defending a beseiged fort can easily turn into a death trap for these units; I can't get them safely out w/o getting mauled, and if they stay, I will probably lose both them and their officers in the AI's assault(s).

Lose/lose situation = frustration

Well yes, on the other hand, historically troops surrounded in a fort could hardly get away with it without the help of an external force.

The game features military control, so if you enter (shall I say invade) enemy territory you are expected to be on the offensive, as you want to take control of it... so you are auto switched to offensive. There is no place to hide or run, you must fight!

But what happened to skirmish ability, i.e., fight (hit) and then run, before you get wiped-out?

Or boats. Like at Fort Washington in 1776 or Fort Ticonderoga in 1777. In both cases the defenders managed to slip out and outrun their pursuers.

Try going anywhere in BoA's "bateux."

embarking back to ships is still something to be done, right.

When the fort is on the coast, I can sometimes afford to have the JP squadron in port, ready to evac threatened troops; but this squadron has limited transport capacity and can only move a small army w/o any cannon or wagons.

And should you leave port, there's the Brit fleet(s) to deal with; the only safe way to travel by water is to wait for the French fleet to arrive.
