Bugger, and with one attack+pursuit my forces at Clarke Field are now trapped there. Sigh, sometimes I really hate the movement routines. Jagdfluger is using them for all they are worth by pinning my forces with small blocking units and then cutting them off etc. It hurts me at this stage of the war but later on it'll all even out as all of his non-base landings and blocking moves now mean that when the time comes for the counter-offensive all of these strategems will be on the table for my forces [:D]

Overall it looks as though 5 or 6 of my vessels may escape from Hawaii which isn't half bad considering what they faced. In addition I now can see a strongly escorted Japanese invasion force heading for Burma. I have organised the Royal Navy and it has sortied from Sri Lanka with orders to intercept. It is very weak aerially but very strong in terms of BBs, CAs etc.

I'm also going to bring in a few fighters to Rangoon and some of my US and British torpedo-bombers. I'm going to go out of my way to avoid letting Jadfluger see just how many Hurricanes and Spitfires I have in India. I'm sure he knows they are there but any uncertainty I can create helps me. Let's see how it goes.

Ah, I see a significant force is coming for Rangoon. I see 2 BBs, several CAs and about a dozen APs and AKs in a separate convoy. I also see a lot of fighters and bombers gathering in Thailand preparatory to basing in Moulmein probably. I think that I will significantly beef up Rangoon by flying in Vildebeest and B-26 units. I should have a solid core of 90 fighters and 70 torpedo bombers in place by tomorrow. With a bit of luck that will suffice. I also have several hundred level bombers standing by for long-range strikes from Calcutta as well as over 200 replacement fighters ready to rotate in as required.

I should have sufficient force to last for 3, perhaps even 4 days, over Rangoon... and the joker in the pack is the ultra-weak British CV TF ( 1 CV and 1 CVL mounting just over 20 fighters and about 25 torpedo-bombers) packed with BBs and CAs which I intend to send in the instant I know whether the Japanese are going for Moulmein or Rangoon ( I'm betting Moulmein ). With luck I can repulse the invasion and significantly reinforce Burma, making a landing at Calcutta less attractive and drawing the Japanese eye westward to Sri Lanka and Pangrim---- precisely where I want them to land.

So, out of the 10 BBs I think the Japanese began with I've sunk 3, heavily damaged 4 more and know the whereabouts of 2 others ( 1 at PH and the other aiding in the invasion of Java ). So, in terms of the battleline my naval forces at India now definitely have the advantage in throw weight. This will be important when the invasion comes, particularly in terms of surviving pre-invasion bombardments etc. The cost has been massive but the battle for India is being shaped nicely so far - well, nicely given just how massive the superiority of the Japanese over the Allies is... In this mod the Japanese are not just stronger than in stock but also stronger than in RHS-EOS so it provides a real challenge for the Allied player as opposed to the usual Sir Robin and come back with overwhelming force boredom we often see.

Today I ordered my British fleet eastward to a point just 240 miles from Rangoon. My intention was twofold:
1. Attrit the enemy surface fleet with torpedo-bomber strikes from the carriers.
2. Put my battleline in position to sprint in to Moulmein or Rangoon should the enemy try to land there.

Obviously I expected losses and was prepared to pay the necessary price but things didn't work out quite as planned.

A small raid from Calcutta makes for the enemy surface combat TF. It achieves little but the really key point here is that the enemy surface combat TF and transports made for Tavoy--- a base outside of the range of my Vildebeests but also one which is very poorly served by the road net in Burma. Either Jagdfluger will have to re-embark these troops at a later date and transport them to Moulmein once my fleet leaves or they will have a month's worth of marching to do. Either suits me fine as all I need is another week and Burma will be a much more difficult nut for the Japanese to crack.

Who would have thought it? Wirraways can't stand up to Zeroes [:D]. The point with these Wirraways isn't to do much but to simply force the deployment of a Zero Daitai at Rabaul. Why?
1. A Zero Daitai deployed to Rabaul is a Zero Daitai not deployed to India.
2. I will lose substantially in the A2A fights but expect to make up those losses somewhat in terms of Japanese operational losses.

Excellent. An unescorted Albacore strike breaks through what must be a low-quality Zero LRCAP and manages to hole AND SINK the new Japanese CA Mikuma. The morale of the Bettys was very low and despite the fact that 17 arrived in the area all but 5 turned back in the face of my CAP. The 5 which made it through managed to score three hits although this isn't as bad as it looks as the Anson is actually a Q Battleship mounting only a small number of 40mm and 20mm AAA. As such it serves only as a torpedo target in this fleet - and it has served well.

So, today Japanese and Allied aerial losses have been quite equal but Allied forces also lost 55 planes on the ground in Rangoon. I am going to abandon Rangoon again and bring my fleet away from Burma - with the enemy shipping landing at Tavoy it isn't needed any more - and back to port for repair.

So, in return for losing approximately 95 planes in the area over the past 2 days and moderate damage to a CV I have sunk 2 BBs and one of the IJN's most modern CAs as well as downing almost 40 planes, including 18 Zeroes. All in all that's a pretty good deal.

The British fleet is in retreat back to Sri Lanka while the Japanese take a base deep in the interior of Burma - it wasn't garrisoned and I left a corridor to it open as I was concentrating on protecting Rangoon and the Burma Road. A weird choice by Jagdfluger but I'll let it develop for a few days and see what he does.

Bombur, no need to apologise before asking a question [:D]. I'm not THAT scary [8D].
 
Well basically we are playing my own Empires Ablaze mod which features a MUCH strengthened Japan. It is based on RHS EOS. Basically I liked what RHS EOS had done in giving the US realistic replacement rates for their heavy bombers etc ( and preventing the usual B-17/24 blitz from March 1942 ) and giving the Japanese Army and Navy greater co-operation such that Army squadrons can fly navy fighters and bombers and vice versa BUT I felt it didn't go far enough in terms of:
 
1. Giving Japan the ability to really go fangs out in 1942 and
2. Giving Japan the ability to resist meaningfully in 1944-45 and
3. Giving Japan the option of creating a more CV-centric navy and a proper strategic bomber force.
 
 
So, what I did was I went through all the ship and plane databases with a view to saying "What would Japan have one if it knew what sort of war it was going to be fighting?" My answer was that it would have made more CVs at the expense of BBs, would have concentrated on putting much more AAA on cruisers and DDs specialised for CV escort and would have ensured it could free up fleet CVs from minor raiding actions by creating a small group ( half a dozen ) of almost unarmoured fast raiding CVLs with equally fast fleet oilers to accompany them. I also decided that Japan would have liked the option of creating a true four-engined strategic bomber and could have benefitted more from German technology exchange.
 
So, how did these philosophical changes play out?
 
1. CVs: Japan finishes the Yamato, Musashi and Shinano as CVAs ( Armoured Carriers ) with 150mm thick deck armour, massive armoured bulges for torpedo protection etc. They are significantly less armoured than the BBs but should be proof to anything less than 2,000lbers from torpedo-bombers and damage from 18 inch torpedo hits is minimal. Essentially if you want to kill these CVs you will need to get 4 or 5 torpedo hits just to stop flight operations. In addition they carry 42 Zeroes and 54 torpedo and dive-bombers as well as a half-dozen recon planes. I figure that these 3 CVAs should be a pretty fair match for 4 to 5 Essex class CVs. They also act as massive bomb magnets and tend to keep their escorts in the fight a lot longer which also helps Japan.
 
2. This also means Japan only has 10 BBs in-game and most of these are 14 inch jobs so the CVAs come at a serious cost. However if you keep these BBs safe then the Nagato, Kongo and Ise class all can be converted to CVs in January 1944.
 
3. Japan also builds the Kaitana class of CVLs. These are optimised for high cruising speed ( 21 knots... I think this is a characteristic of any succesful commerce raider ) and high sprint speed. Endurance is massive and sprint speed of 32 knots helps keep them out of trouble if spotted BUT with an aircraft compliment of only 27 planes, NO armour and a durability of only 25 a single hit is usually sufficient to put an end to flight operations with 2 or 3 hits guaranteeing a sinking.
 
4. The Sensei Maru AMC class has been built to accompany the Kaitana class CVLs in its raiding function. It has the same cruising and top speed but can carry 6,000 tons of fuel with it. It is also better armed than the average AO. Obviously if you choose not to use your Kaitana class as raiders you can just stop building the Sensei Maru class of AOs and incorporate the Kaitana class into your fleet as additional CAP carriers. Or you could just fold the Sensei Maru class into KB giving KB a fleet of oilers which can sprint with it and refuel all of KB at sea.
 
5. Samurai CLAAs ( named after well-known players e.g. PzB-san, Pauk-san, AndyMac-san, Zeta16-san etc ). These are light CLAAs and are basically slightly larger DDs than CLAAs. As such they are fast, manoeuvrable and even in 1942 can mount a AAA defence of about 400, rising to close to 1,000 following their 1944 refits. They are very poorly armoured and have low durability and in surface action their Long Lances can be effective but their guns are likely to be ineffective against anything that's armoured- against unarmoured opponents they are death incarnate due to their large number of medium AAA.
 
6. Nemo CLAAs ( yeah I know... this is a class of CAAA... Heavy anti-aircraft cruiser.... named after well-known modders, developers and me since I created the mod ). Basically these are CAs which got converted to CAAAs while on the building slip as Japan began to realise it needed a LOT more AA defence for its CVs and needed to focus more on survivability of its CV TFs. The Nemo class has a durability of 75, the same deck and side armour as the Shinano class of CVAs and can project a AAA power of about 1400 per ship if memory serves me correctly. It can be sunk and Japan only starts with one of them but it takes a LOT to sink it. In one test-game my opponent flung hordes of torpedo bombers at the Nemo-containing TF for several days before getting 5 or 6 torpedo hits and finally sinking it. I think though that it claimed about 1/3rd of all planes attacking it over the course of the battle. They are very effective but VERY expensive to build.
 
7. I also managed to give Japan a few hundred Kaiten class MTBs for use during 1944 and 45 for base defence purposes. I tried to make respawning MTBs but couldn't do so without crippling their combat power so giving a few hundred non-respawnable ones was the best compromise.
 
 
In the air Japan gets greater inter-service operability but, most crucially,
1. A proper twin-engined replacement for the G4M series in 1944. The G7M has armour, superior range and a better torpedo ( I switch most Japanese planes from 1944 from the Type 91 to the Type 91/7 which greatly increases armour penetration and explosive power and can actually damage US BBs once again.)
 
2. Proper strategic bomber options. If you are willing to invest in production and put up with some potentially crippling logistical complications ( Me-264s require so much supply that I used them in chutais of 9 to 12 planes to suck supply around the home islands to bases I wished to repair... A 10 plane chutai sucks about 20,000 tons of supply for a month's worth of operation. OUCH!!!!!! On the other hand it 3 Me-264s drop as many bombs on target as an entire sentai of Ki-48s or Sallies, they have far superior range ( 33 hexes normal, 43 extended), armour, strong defensive armament and high speed ( perfect for avoiding interception ).
 
In addition in mid-42 Japan gets an Me-264 version which carries radio-controlled bombs. This is an absolutely devastating version. I have used it in 1944 test games to use 120 Me-264s to destroy a CV TF of 4 US CVs operating with full CAP. The HS-293 will even penetrate the deck armour on some BBs so it can also be a BB-killer. Its main use, however, is to simply pound CV decks and damage them sufficiently that they can't fly CAP the next day... then you send the G9Ms in.
 
The G9M is a four-engined torpedo bomber. Would anyone have used 4-engined torpedo bombers? Well the Italians used 3-engined ones and the Allies initially invented skip-bombing with B-17s so I don't think it is unreasonable. I also think that if I was in Japan in January 1941 and had seen the difference in survivability of my Me-264s when compared to unarmoured Army bombers I would have gone --- hmm, if its nice to have armour in an army bomber wouldn't it be nice to have an ultra-long-range torpedo bomber with armour? Hence the G9M was born. It mounts a modified Long Lance torpedo --- and so can easily kill BBs --- has a range of 33 hexes and has armour. A lot of them die during attacks but they score more hits than Betties and when they hit they devastate enemy units. In addition by virtue of the fact that they have a range of 33 hexes they can usually hit Allied shipping well in the rear which helps force the Allies to properly escort convoys.
 
 
3. Japan also gets the Ki-44 III in January 1943. This is a fighter with a top speed of 394mph, armour, excellent manoeuvrability and 4 cannons. It is carrier-capable ( having been a KI-44 II version which was, in real life, designed for navy use ) and can be used by both the army and navy. I expect the Ki-44 III to be the premier Japanese fighter well into mid-44. It isn't quite a match for Corsairs but eats Hellcats alive.
 
4. Japan also get the Ki-219 Uhu ( instead of a myriad of crap night fighters it gets one which actually deserves the title and gets things done) and the Ki-109 Mike, a copy of the Bf-109 E. Of note Japan DID actually receive 3 Me-109s and jigs to produce them before the war began so this is not at all unrealistic. In this game it looks like Jagdfluger is building about 150 Zeroes and 150 Mikes per month ( with production aiming to rise to 300 of each ) so as you can see he is building Zeroes for long-range strikes and Mikes for base defence. They are far superior to the Zeroes ( and have armour ) but have a range of only 2 hexes so are really only good for base defence.
 
5. As 1944 rolls around Japan gets a new generation of twin-engined fighter-bombers. These aren't really enhanced for fighter duties but rather for bomber-interception and, importantly, FlAK suppression. I've tested these out and if you send in 48 of these fighters with your torpedo bombers you can massively reduce your losses and really cripple the enemy escorts in terms of AA defence. I think it is reasonable to believe that a Japan which realised the shipborne FlAK was killing its planes would design a dedicated FlAK suppressor/bomber-interceptor. You start off with basic Ki-45 version with many MGs and a single cannon plus a backseater. As time goes by the twin-engined planes get faster, lose the back seater, move to an all-cannon armament and gradually increase that cannon from 20mm to 37mm and, finally, 57mm. In addition they go from one or two 100Kg bombs to a larger number of smaller bombs ( again, proven in tests to increase effectiveness as a FlAK suppressor as small bombs are enough to destroy gun tubs and the more bombs you throw the higher your chance of getting those hits). Eventually you end up with something which is FAR more devastating than an Il-2 Shturmovik and can really put a world of hurt on any US DD or CLAA.
 
 
6. As 1945 rolls in Japan gets its terminal upgrades.
It gets the Shinden early in 1945 - which is devastating even against Corsairs.
It also gets the J9M Stan which is a long-range twin-engined bomber interceptor but is blindingly fast and incredibly well-armed and can also FlAK suppress. It is also so fast that even on the deck and unescorted it has a good chance of breaking through an UeberCAP and causing some serious harm.
 
Most importantly though Japan gets the Ki-115 Sabre. This is a purpose-designed kamikaze plane Japan really did design. it was designed to be able to accomodate almost any engine in real life so through some technical trickery I've managed to allow its production without requiring any engines. It is also the terminal upgrade for most outdated Japanese planes. So, if Japan is no longer producing A6Ms but hasn't converted those factories then ALL of those hundreds of points of production auto-convert to Ki-115s. I would expect any Japanese player worth his salt to be getting 2 or 3,000 Ki-115s per month from January 1945.
 
They are slow, have a low ceiling, unmanoeuvrable and have a durability of only 8. They are unarmoured and generally get blasted apart in A2A and destroyed by even light FlAK BUT when you send in 1,000 of them SOME get through and when they do the fact that they carry an 800Kg AP round helps them do a lot of damage. So, they are a weapon of desperation but they do allow you to mob Allied UeberCAP and get through. They are short-ranged ( 3 hexes) so are only really a base defence weapon.
 
In terms of production a single Ki-115 costs 18 HI. To put it into perspective a fighter costs 36 and a twin-engined bomber costs 54. So the Ki-115 is really just a way to conduct a massive kamikaze campaign on the cheap.
 
 
 
UeberCAP:
I'm using a variation of the RHS A2A system which allows for a LOT more leakers. I've managed to get leakers through KB's ueberCAP several times in the past month and have managed to score hits on a BB and a CVL. This increase in the number of leakers is also evident in the recent strikes on Rangoon. In this mod the bombers do, almost always, get through. They may be massively disrupted and mightn't accomplish much but you aren't going to see too many raids in which everything is killed by UeberCAP.
 

Pilot training:
Japan gets 150 IJA and 216 IJN pilots per month ( based on a proposed training regime they had). The kicker is IJA pilots have 60 Exp and IJN pilots 65 Exp. For comparison USN pilots have 65 Exp and USMC etc pilots have 60 Exp so apart from Chinese and Soviet pilots the experience playing field is pretty level. The Allies still get triple the number of pilots though of course.
 

What do the Allies get to offset this?
Well they get non-respawnable CVs . Not sure if I'll keep this or not but in this game my CVs are non-respawnable. It certainly keeps things interesting and makes me more careful with them although, of course, with me careful is a very relative term.
 
Mostly the Allies get good upgrades for the Royal Navy in 1943/44, much earlier access to the P-51 ( they get 15 per month from september 1942 ramping up 30+ when the P-51 enters full production in september 1943 ) and access to Corsairs in January 1943. They get about 170 per month including 54 per month dedicated to their CVs. These Corsairs should be a match for the Ki-44 III entering Japanese service but, obviously unless the Allies keep the pressure on everywhere, the Japanese will be able to mass enough force along a single axis to blunt the power of a single service Allied advance ( which is what we are seeing in AndyMac's two current AARed games ).
 
Overall though the Allies don't get much more. They do get another USMC, a parachute division and an armoured division extra but the Japanese get a few extra divisions also. Mostly though I think that the Allies are so much stronger than Japan in 1944 that Japan needs all the help it can get, including overwhelming force in 1942.
 
 
I think the biggest constraint on the Japanese economy is probably the fact that I massively reduced auto-upgrading so that while the A6M2 will auto-upgrade to the A6M5 the D3A won't upgrade to the D4A and B5N won't upgrade to B6N or B7N. So, essentially throughout the war Japan is going to have to invest a LOT of supplies in creating its next generation of fighters and bombers and will, unless it does very well in 1942, find itself in serious logistical straits in 1944. There's very little point in knowing you could dominate the air with 300 Shindens if you don't have the 990,000 tons of supply it would take to create that production 330,000 to expand Shinden production and 660,000 to create 2 Kokusai factories for each Shinden airframe produced.
 
In addition since I have adopted the RHS policy of grading engines by horsepower you find that by 1944 nothing you are producing requires Mitsubishi or Nakajima engines and so the 500,000 tons of supply you poured into those engines in 1942 to produce engines for your 1942 fighters avails you nothing in 1944. By the same token you don't need to produce any Kokusai engines until late 1944 as nothing you have requires such high-powered engines.
 
I adopted this limited auto-upgrade policy as I felt it was both realistic and a historically reasonable way to force the Japanese player to burn supply if he wants massive fighter and bomber numbers in 1944. I wanted to allow a Japanese player who played well to benefit from his good play ( if he has enough supply he can build hundreds of the best fighters and be ready to upgrade to the next generation the second it becomes available ) BUT also be penalised if things were going badly. If you have lost oil, resources and supply by 1944 you simply may not have enough supply to produce the next generation of fighter and might be forced to continue producing 2nd-line fighters because you can't afford to invest in producing the better ones. This is what happened in Japan in 1944 and I have always felt that the game didn't create the same situations in-game --- and suffered for it.
 
I expect Japan to run rampant until September 1942. I expect the Allies to gain ground from then until January 1943. From January 1943 to July I expect there to be parity. From August to December 43 I expect Allied superiority. In January 1944 I expect Japan to gain a major bonus from all the BB conversions and a new generation of fighters and bombers and to be able to contest things more freely until the middle of the year. From mid-44 to 45 the Allies will be superior again ( but massively so ) before being pegged back by the sudden appearance of swarms of cheap MTBs and kamikaze planes.
 
Another point about the Ki-115...
Since factories don't upgrade the player is going to be left with loads of D3A, B5N, Ki-43, Ki-109 etc factories which aren't producing anything in 1945. Well all of those factories will switch to producing the Ki-115 ( which can also equip floatplane squadrons for those interested in hitting Allied forces which sail close to bases with 100% damaged runways . I the Allies bomb the base again and destroy 10 Ki-115s its no big deal since you are probably making 100 a day... This changes the whole calculus of the game and means the Allies can't just rely on a 100% damaged runway rendering a base unusable.)

So let's assume that you produce 3,000 Ki-115s per month ( quite possible when you count up the 100 to 200 Zeroes, Sallies, Ki-48s etc which were being produced in early years but are no longer needed ). That will cost a total of 54,000 HI - or 1,800 HI per day. Since Japan will be running an industry of about 13,000 HI ( or more ) at that stage you can see that those 1,800 HI aren't really all that much, especially since you won't be producing many ships by that stage of the war.It is also a production-neutral boost to Japanese capabilities and is a bit of a gift to a Japanese player who has managed his airplane production well. Manage it poorly and upgrade factories unnecessarily and you won't get many free Ki-115s. Manage it well and you can get several thousand per month.
 
 
About the only other major change is that I have made all resources and supply production be on-map ( except for map edge bases like Karachi and CONUSA which are off limits to invasion ) so strategic bombing is really devastating now - especially in China.
 
 
This is my 2nd test-game with Jagdfluger. In the first one I felt Japan might be too strong in some areas and the Allies in others and was going to tone them down a bit. Jagdfluger felt differently ( he was Allied ) and so we decided to swap and see how things looked in mid-42. Once we reach that point I'll probably go through the mod updating production numbers etc based on our experience.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/25/42

A very interesting day. It looks like the Japanese little SNLF at the size 3 base in northern Burma is being reinforced with flown-in reinforcements ( the unit count went up from 1 to 4 today ). Obviously only a small amount of troops can have been brought in so far so I'll concentrate on bombing the base's supply levels and airfield back into the stone age. I expect that there will be a LOT of fighter present there so I'm going to be very aggressive and have ordered my stock of MiG-3s, P-40Es and P-40Bs to conduct a sweep while my precious Spitfires and expendable ROC P-43 Lancers ( with experience levels of 30 or so ) will be tasked with providing raid escort to the 400 level bombers I am committing from Calcutta. I am betting that even if he shoots down 60 or 70 bombers the rest will be sufficient to get through and blast his runway back into the stone age. With that done he will find that his railway line has been cut and any fighter and bomber squadrons there will be cut off-along with their experienced pilots.

This will either work well or result in the loss of a sizeable portion of my bomber force... It isn't going in today though, today was just spent flying the bombers into Calcutta and getting ready for the strike.

Below you can see just how close to PH my CV TF has been lurking. So far it hasn't been spotted and I'm getting thoughts of commerce raiding. These are bad, evil thoughts which will lead to the loss of a carrier so I'm trying to fight them. It is, however, difficult. Really though I should send this force to India via the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. I'm afraid that if they leave now they will simply arrive too late but since I need India to survive I think I'll send them there and just have them sprint all the way there.

Are you certain he is going for India - he doesnt have the advantage of a quiet Soviet does he ? So he cannot strip all his forces the way you were doing against me (numbskull me for agreeing to that HR [:D][:D])
 
If the mod is as I remember it then you have seriously dented his seapower - even your designer class CAAA's and Yamato wont be enough to keep him safe.
 
It appears unless I am missing something that China is quiet so with a quiet China and a Soviet hammer to fall does he have the troops to attack you ?
 
I remember (vaguely) you had about 26 or 7 Divisions heading to India against me can he muster anything close to that sized force - it just appears from the AAR that he is scattergunning a little.
 
Against me you went all out for 2 Objectives and concentrated everything on India and Pearl it just doesnt feel like he is doing that early enough.
 
Leave India alone for two months and its a tough nut to crack - 3 and arguably impossible in this mod if the allied player plays it sensibly.
 
Is it possible that he is actually going for NZ or Australia instead and playing the long game in India ?
 
p.s. I was looking at the mod the other day that half build BB the allies get has an upgrade defined to turn it into an 'extra' full KGV class.

Andy, I think it is entirely possible that he's going to invade Australia - which is fine, I can win without Australia but I can't win without India and the Brits. If he is smart he'll go for India first as it becomes far more impregnable the longer it is left alone and with India in my hands I can definitely launch amphibious invasions against Java in '43 and bomber offensives against most of the valuable items in Thailand, Burma and western China.
 
China is very quiet as I am concentratin on building defences along the Changsha, Liuchow line and sending as many troops as possible across the Burma trails into Burma for bolstering up my Indian and Burmese defences. I have approximately 3,000AV on the way there ( 1,000 AV there, 2,000 AV on the trails ).

In the Soviet Union I'm just bottling up in defensive positions and biding my time. If I manage to hold India then I will be able to shuttle B-24s and B-17s in and carry out bomber raids against the Home Islands soon enough from my safe bases deep in the Soviet interior. It is quiet but Jagdfluger knows that if he weakens his forces much I'll mass a mobile force and move over to the offensive. So far we are just really shadow-boxing except for my abandonment of Vladivostok.
 
I think I had 19 divisions in total, maybe another 2 armoured ones... Jagdfluger can make 19 divisions by my count --- and the Japs can usually make a couple more from Bdes and Regts they have lying around. If he manages to land everything he is bringing then I am well and truly screwed. My plan is to sink a few divisions of troops before they can land and then try and take things from there. I doubt he has much CV cover available to cover this landing as Yamato is near Noumea and I've ID'ed the 6 CVs of his Pearl strike force still around Hawaii along with a couple of CVLs and CVEs. Even if they move now they won't be in place to support an invasion until the end of February which is the same time I think his troops might be ready. Overall therefore I think I won't see an invasion before mid-March by which time I will have another 1,000 AV on hand ( so about 5,000 AV ) + more of my Chinese troops and another 200 or so first-line fighters and 400 or more additional front-line bombers.
 
Even with all of KB ( about 300 Zeroes ) I just can't see him surviving against close to 2,500 planes unless he tries to hug the Burmese coast and land at Diamond Harbour or Calcutta ( but I have close to 6,000 mines in both these locations ). Sri Lanka has 500+ AV in each base, will have level 9 forts by then and close to 100% preparation as well as LOTS of supply - but almost no fuel as I'm shuttling the fuel out.
 
Yeah if Anson survives to September 42 it becomes a full KGV. Of course by September 1942 India's fate will be decided and if it is lost an extra KVG won't do me much good .

Your mod seems to be very interesting. How do you think this A2A engine compares to stock, NM and RHS? How did you deal with Uber CAP?

Bombur,
I think this A2A model will guarantee more leakers in almost all situations. I have changed the range of all aircraft weapons. In stock they can all fire out to 6 but in this mod anything under 20mm has a range of 1, anything from 20 to 35mm has a range of 2 and anything greater than 36mm has a range of 3.

What this means is that most fighters on both sides actually get into firing positions much less often than previously. In fighter vs fighter combat where they both try to be agressive you get uite a few firing passes but against bombers you get far fewer effective firing passes. You still can't overcome the underlying base code entirely but it ameliorates it significantly. I think the biggest benefit is that if you mass a lot of bombers you get exponentially greater numbers of leakers.

Its funny that you asked this at this time since today saw the first Allied 250+ bomber raid. My bomber experience still isn't massive ( I've increased it to be in the 60s now and hope to get it into the high 70s/low 80s by the time the Japanese fleet approaches India) so they weren't massively effective BUT when push came to shove 25 Zeroes managed to shoot down just 5 bombers. Admittedly I cheated a little by distracting a lot of the fighters with some high-flying Pe-2s ( which fly above the A6M2s combat ceiling and tend to draw a disproportionate number of fighters up after them and out of position to attack the low-flying level bombers... a trick which I feel probably halved my losses ) but even without that I am certain I wouldn't have lost more than a dozen.

In 1942 this benefits the Allies - I have gotten dive-bombers through KB's CAP several times already - an in 1944 and 45 it benefits the Japanese as they will find it easier to break through UeberCAP - not easy but easier.

Hmm, another 6 to 1 exchange rate. At this rate KB's Zeroes will be able to totally butcher every fighter I have in no time. So, all in all a quietish day. The enemy also has 3 transports in action at Moulmein and is unloading his invasion force from Moulmein ( initially he was unloading them but now he has begun loading again ). I, personally, am enjoying the fact that I've managed to force his forces out of Burma at the end of January 1942. He'll be back if he wants to go for Calcutta but it'll cost him time and in a month's time I get 30 Wellingtons a month and 40 Kittyhawk Is ( P-40Es) and that's going to aid my defence immeasurably--- and the additional 700 AV of ground troops won't hurt either. India is really beginning to fill up nicely at this stage.

The Japanese managed to pull out most of their troops by ship over the past two days. Still I am now going to be able to strongly garrison Rangoon and Moulmein against naval invasion and I think this is bound to force the Japanese fleet to consider landing in Western India/Sri Lanka as opposed to landing at Chittagong or Diamond Harbour.

Best of all the four units at Magwe weren't annihilated and I'm rushing P-43 and Pe-2 units forward with a view to engaging in pilot training ( my ROC P-43 pilot experience is only in the 30s but one month of training can bring this up to the 60s which would be sufficient to let them act as second-echelon bomber defence).

In other news I've finally gotten a nice barrier set up along the Malaysian coast with some 15 Allied submarines ( almost all K or O class boats ) along the main routes of advance. This should give me some warning and attrition of the Japanese attack.


Below you can see the defences I'm building up. As you can see I'm aiming for 500 AV + Level 9 forts in each possible landing base. Also I've taken pains to try to build my defensive lines in swamps, urban terrain, woods or mountains --- so you can triple any bonus I am getting. All units are fully prepared and most even have Hs co-located with them for further bonuses. Japan WILL get ashore wherever it lands and it will take whatever base it lands at from me but I am hoping to delay them enough to bring a ready reaction force to bear ( this force is being built up to a total of some 2,000 AV at present and might even exceed 3,000 AV by the time the Japanese land if I can delay such landings by about a month.

In other news I have begun airlifting in my 4th Chinese division and have ordered yet more Chinese forces out of China this turn... Basically I now have a much better read of how many support points I have available and am removing armies until such time as the forces present are equal to the support capacities of the HQs. I see no point in putting 4,000 infantry AV in a hex which can only support 3,000./ Better to leave 3,000 there and have them operate at full efficiency while the other 1,000 makes its way to Burma and then India where I will soon have large amounts of excess support.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/29/42

February 1942 brings Spitfires [:D] and in March I get the Kittyhawk I. That'll give me 80 P-40E equivalents, 26 Spits and roughly the same number of Hurricanes. I can't wait to get the Kittyhawk Is as that will really give me better endurance when the fight comes.

Timtom; in the question lies the answer. Simply got tired of those who don't BSing about those who do and took a break. Then VSWG dropped me a PM and so after 5 months I checked back and decided to re-up with the AAR.

[8D] I'm reading every line of this AAR.

How will you deal with a Japanese strategic bombing campaign? IIRC the Japanese player will soon be able to field a large number of Me-264s. They can reach the West Coast from Pearl Harbor, right?

Well I've dealt with the threat of strategic bombing against CONUSA as follows:
1. I've tried to hunt his AKs - This is RHS-based so there are fewer AKs and APs for Japan in-game. Why AKs? Simple, I plan to hit his resources hard throughout 1942. He won't run out of oil, there's enough of it in RHS' economic model, but he can run out of resources and supply.
 
2. Me-264s use huge numbers of supplies so basing 100 of them at PH is going to require 100,000+ tons of supply per month ( that's a massive diversion of resources ). Anything which tightens his number of AKs helps make it more difficult for him to base out of PH.
 
3. I have about 800 fighters already based at the West Coast. If he comes for me with Me-264s the cost is going to be prohibitive to him in return for the hits I have to take.
 
4. If I were going to mount a Japanese strategic bombing campaign as Japan I would choose to take Sri Lanka and just bomb India into dust rather than take on CONUSA.
 
 
I think Jagdfluger will go for India and Oz rather than spreading his resources too widely by investing heavily in strategic bombers. He seem to have reached the conclusion that I invested too heavily in bombers in my game as Japan vs him. Since this mod contains the Ki-48 II ( which is armoured ) he may just be going for a Ki-48 II and Ki-49 bomber mix with a few Me-264s to give him a limited strategic capability. He is certainly investing VERY heavily in fighters ( he is aiming for productio of slightly over 300 Zeroes and 300 Mikes per month ) and I think that is because he wants to create an impenetrable shield when he hits India and then plans to use low-tempo operations to take Oz later --- betting in increased CAP to lessen his bomber losses.
