No major Ai needed for the ideas I have mentioned.
It is primarily an interface issue allowing another way for the player to use current game mechanics to plan and manage TFs to support supply, fuel, oil and resource movement. The only additional mechanics necessary would be to track assign a label to currnet locations as sources and hubs, ability to tranlsate orders from the interface to current game mechanics (the AI if you will), and ability to set waypoints (and remember them for resue).
Given it may be outside the scope of a patch, but it would not require a major rewrite of the underlying mechanics to implement.

they are good ideas, but would require a major if not completely re-written routine and AI routine. Hence thats why it was never implemented. perhaps in a future game, with a bigger budget one might see such a setup which would also allow an AI to follow such a script.

Actually it would require a rewrite. Discussions of this sort, involving the items you cited have been discussed in the past.

Drop the piece aboute setting the actual convoy routes/making waypoints and make it informational. That would not require any changes to the game mechanics. It would be a matter of designing an interface to bring the required information together.
Step 1 if you will.

I wanted to know if anyone could recommend a good book that tells about the logistics aspect of the war (particularly in the Pacific)?
Thanks in advance,
Bill
I don't know if this is exactly what you are looking for, but this one is a SOPAC mandatory.
"Amphibious Operations in the South Pacific in World War II" William L. McGee, BMC Publications, Santa Barbara, CA, 2002.
Bill is an ex Navy CPO who served in tha Alligator Navy in War II, but is not a credentialed historian. However, I find him in the professional's bibliographies and they quote him as though he were Moses. It's a 3-volume set, about $40.00 per volume.
Bill has been-there-done-that. He's also a prince of a man who deserves his royalty checks. I was an Operational Analysist in govt. service for 11 years, doing just these kinds of studies. I learned more from Bill, across evenings of rum and sunset watching at Santa Barbara Yacht Club than I did in all my years of professional service.
Bill's contact info is on the back cover of the book. He loves to chat. Personal contact is preferred.

Logistics at Iwo Jima
This link is to a chapter of an online book about Iwo Jima. The entire chapter is devoted to the logistics of that invasion.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. I've already started perusing Beans, Bullets and Black Oil as well as The Big 'L'. I'll also take a look at the Logistics at Iwo Jima too and Amazon.com and Abebooks.com for the Amphibious Operations books.
Even though I am in a freight-related position with regards to work, my military background is Army and I'm learning about the Navy stuff from scratch! I have to say that I am envious and impressed of all the knowledge in this forum![&o]
Next on my list is the Japanese side!
Thanks again to everyone!

My favorite book, though not about logistics alone, is Geoffrey Perret's, There's a War to Be Won. If I remember correctly, John Ellis's, Brute Force was pretty good on the subject too. I thought a lot of the early part of Pacific War by John Costello was good on this aspect of the war, but it's been quite awhile since I read it.
