We can do that - a comprehensive recalculation of the durability of APs based on capacity. This would be consistent.
We can't go to 500 or 1000 points per ship - but we can make them in the league they should be in - right up there with smaller carriers and large cruisers. This means they will also be harder to sink: VP = durability points. But that too is correct. The Italian liner I referred to above was the Conte Verde. There are a number of true Japanese liners that should also be so rated. And probably the Yamatama Maru should be harder to sink but cost a lot more VP when lost.
But Yamatama Maru is an AK - so big we cannot even give her the correct capacity in the game! [80,000 tons anyone?]

Messing with durability = vp is a good solution. BigB has done some work on that for warships and I have redone all of my "A" types (AP, AK, AV, yadda yadda). BigB uses 1 durability point for every 200 tons of 'standard' displacement (I think). That's very close to Matrix values except where there are errors.

I use 1 point for every 500 tons of 'standard', Plimsol SNA loaded displacement for the rest; I also adjust the factors upward or downward, depending on whether the ship is a straight P, a P&C, or a straight C (differences in compartmentalization).

BTW the biggest Japanese liners were the Izumo and Kashiwara Marus (27,000 grt)(converted to Hiyo and Junyo), next biggest were the Asama, Tatsuta and Chichibu Marus (17,000 grt). Scharnhorst, Aramis & Conte Verde were in the (16-18,000 grt range).

Yamatama Maru was a type-1B war standard of 4,500 - 5,000 gross tons., about 367 feet, of the Bingo Maru class, operated by NYKK.
