TW? You mean Total War? 'cause I don't remember being able to pause the battle to issue new orders...but it's been a while since I played it.

Yep Total War, the only way to Pause is to hit "P" on the key board. That hot key is actualy documneted in the manual. But I missed it for a while. Then someone else told me about it.

After CA's craptastic games after MTW

To an extent I will agree. The best of the lot is Shogun Warlord Editon. The strategy part gets progressively worse after that one. The battle about the same.

Anybody ever play "Ground Control"? prety good for the first few battles then way too manic once the oponent gets Lots of flyers and the only way to use your AAA is to dismount it from its carrier.
