I tried setting the display to 1024x768 but got the same error message. It appears that the game is not auto switching to 1024x768. Any other ideas or am I out of luck?

Have you successfully been able to run other games at 1024x768 full screen, it might be a problem with your display drivers?
Anyhow there should be a workaround and that is to make the game run in windowed mode. This is normally done inside the game and saved until next time you start the game, but there is a file where you can set it manually.

in the file below, change the WINDOWED_MODE 0 to WINDOWED_MODE 1 instead which means windowed mode is true instead of false. so,

settings.txt
WINDOWED_MODE 1

Unfortunately that didnt work either. There was no Windowed code in the setting.txt file. I had to add it. I do have other programs that run fine at 1024x768. GOA is one that comes to mind.

It seems to be that you are running an old version of the game where the windowed mode does not exist in settings.tx, adding it into the file wont help since the support for it is not there.

Do you run the latest patch?

Success at last! I applied the 1.04 patch and changed the windowed_mode to 1. All appears normal both in native and 1024x768 resolution. Many thanks for your patience and help.
