Ike,
Do you forget that the Japanese player has all sorts of ships, LCUs and planes that arrive in the 1st 2 months of the game.  PM isn't about throwing lots of force into it, it's about how to supply the forces that are there.  The Japanese have a superior position and can interdict supplies from Rabul, or other bases in range, with Bettys and Nells.  Japanese CVs can roam the area virtually immune to Allied attack under a 100+ plane CAP and ruin your supply TFs.  Do you really believe that people who've been playing PBEM UV for ages don't know the game's quirks and you do within a couple of months.  It's time for a reality check here, play the Allies and try to hang on to PM.  Maybe your opponent will love seeing your resources going into PM while he takes Luganville and gets an auto victory because the Americal Division can't hold Luganville and EPV without help.  Once a Japanese player of any competance takes those 2 bases in force the Allied player is virtually doomed as bombers tend to only fly the occasional mission without escort (no range) fighters until the P-38s arrive.  The Lightning starts production in 10/42 so you've got less time than you think to take EPV, a must, and Luganville.  If Luganville has supplies and adequate force the Allies lose.  PM is not, repeat not an important base in the game.  If the Japanese take it the the Allied player can hit PM and/or GG with his bombers, which is great for training purposes.  In '43 try to stop a good Allied player from retaking PM.  Why lose forces, unless it's as a speed bump, that you don't have to for a base that easily retaken later?   This is a game and not a historical recreation of history.  The game has things in it that don't work like history so play the game and enjoy the game for what it is.

Todd if you look under the war room you'll find some threads on there from some very good players who have moved onto WITP who say exactly the same thing.

The Japanese only have the 144Rgt at Rabaul with 144 assault points. That's all they have.

Until turn 42 the Japanese do not have the assault points to get even close to a 2-1 advantage to take Port Moresby should the Allied player choose to defend it. It's simple numbers. Not on scenario 17 at 100% commitment.

Much less he can't move enough material down from Truk to sustain anything because he is carrying down the divisions.

If you don't believe me and would like your Port Moresby reality checked send me your first Japanese turn, we'll play for 3 months, no houserules and I'll show you.

And don't quit the game before 3 months is up when you start seeing I'm right.

OK, now I remember your previous post; if you don't have a computer virus, then it could be a minor compatibility issue w/UV, assuming you're running XP.

Or is your system so new you're running Vista? Haven't heard good things re Vista and games.

In any event, I seem to recall having some minor running problems w/UV on XP, so I ran it as Win '98; or was it Win 2000?.

It's been a while, but I think I did this by R-clicking the UV exe file via the Start/Programs approach, which, if memory still serves me, gives the user retro-compatibility options when running the game, i.e., run this program as .....

Wow!  You mean to tell me that 6 weeks out of 1 1/2 years of game time means that the Japanese are to weak to take PM in the game if they want to?  Time for a reality check!  What I said was that if the Japanese player wants to take PM he will be able to do so and if the Japanese player wants to interdict supplies to PM he can.  Does the Allied player have the manpower to spare for PM defense and guard aginst attacks aginst the NHs early on?  Does the Allied player have the naval strength to stand toe to toe with the KB early in the game?  I'm exercising my right to not believe in the gospel of UV as preached by Ike and there's nothing that'll change my mind about this as I've played enough to know about PM, it's relative value and it's overall importance to the Allied and Japanese player.  Is PM important to the Japanese defense scheme?  Yes!  Is PM important to the Allies as a base that's the key to NG?  Yes! Can the Japanese hold NG against a determined Allied attack in late ,42 or early,43?  Almost always the answer is no.  Can the Allied player win the game without PM?  Yes!  So my question is why risk the loss of units for a base that can't be held as the Allied side in early '42 when those units are more valuable elsewhere and can be used later?

I will try the Win98 compatibility. I have tried about everything else. I have two new video cards coming this week so maybe that will speed it up, but I think it is some hidden incompatibility. Some stupid one I have not found... yet. [;)]

The Allies can't keep PM supplied? And why not? They have submarines, fast transport, c47's along with regular transports to do it with.

Interdict the supplies with Nells and Bettys? You have one group of Bettys and 2 of Nells to do it with until month FOUR. Both of whom fall completely apart at just the sight of an AA gun. Both of whom will not intercept one fast transport going into PM, subs or C47's. Oh but your going to park the KB between PM and Cooktown for 2 months to starve them out?[:D] Yes, we'll see how long that last.

Taking Port Moresby if defended by the Allies is not nearly as easy to take as you think it is and if you get sloppy you won't take it at all.

OOooh but Port Moresby is not an important base?[8|] Your can just skip it and go to Luganville and EPV?? Port Moresby is priority one Todd for the Japanese. If you don't get PM your dreaming of going to Luganville and EPV and keeping them.

Still waiting on your Japanese turn one to our 3 month experiment Todd so you can show me how easy it is for the Japanese to take Port Moresby when the Allied player chooses to defend it.

Ike,

Forgive me, but I just can't deal with this ego thing where you always know best and everybody else is wrong.  You're right, PM is the most important base on the map and auto victory bases pale in importance to PM.  I'll take your advice about keeping a base in supply by sub, fast transport and C-47s only and ignore how fast the supplies dwindle, especially in combat, because lift capacity isn't important.  You're right as usual and anyone who diagrees is wrong.  "Nough said.....

Would you believe that I have an Associates in Computer Info Systems, and it finally paid off!

XP is a very stable system, etc., but apparently UV wasn't really made w/NTFS in mind.

Well, at least we're pleased w/ourselves; compare that w/Ike & tocaff, who are @ war over a war game in this very post!

Did Ike say he was having the same trouble as you, but w/WitP? Maybe he needs to dial that back to Win 2000 after he and tocaff have had enough.

Forgive me, but I just can't deal with this ego thing where you always know best and everybody else is wrong.

I'm not saying I know best and not everyone disagrees with me Todd. I do know this. Port Moresby is not near as easy to take as you think it is and if you don't capture it the Japanese are going to have big problems really fast. Not an important base for the Japanese to capture? Skip it over and see how fast it becomes VERY IMPORTANT.

And your pipe dream of skipping Port Moresby and throwing everything down in Luganville & EPV and winning the game come January 1st? If that were possible or so easy as you make it sound it would have been discovered a long time ago and everyone one would be doing it don't you think?

And as far as my ego? I'm not the one who threw down my crayons like a dirty diapered little baby and quit a PBEM game after suffering a setback trying to recapture, speak of the devil...Port Moresby...eh. Wasn't as easy as you thought it was going to be eh Todd?

Naturally you invented an excuse about CAP not showing up and supplies dissapearing, or maybe you made a mistake? Not that it mattered because as soon as you tried to land your fleet and supplies it was going to be blown out of the water anyways and you realised that.

No Todd, the Japanese have an advantage to take Port Moresby not a guarantee on scenario 17 as well the Allies have an good advantage to win scenario 17 not a gurantee. I think maybe your confused with scenario 19. I offered to show you in PBEM but of course you don't want to accept. Everyone take note of how his majesty defends the crap he says on the forum.

Or maybe your just smoking something up there in Brazil we don't have down here in Argentina. If so, mail me some.

I just got done trying UV out some more and it is fast now! Excellent fix! Here I had looked at the shortcut for anything extra on the command line and I looked at the Compatibility tab, then ignored it. I guess you are correct, UV is not taking advantage of XP like it could. It still loads a lot into memory as I watch the hard drive LED and wait. Not like before though!

Your degree is working. [;)] Thanks for the idea. [&o]

I avoid online wars. I have been in too many in the past and my motto now is to keep the peace, even if I am wrong and have to bow out, I will. I remember staying awake at night while the wife slept deep, thinking "did I offend so and so? Was I wrong or right? Should I have NOT said what I did?" I am 52 and I have had my share of fights. I hate them. Pride can be a terrible thing when it is over produced. [X(] [:@] [8D] Testosterone is even worse! [;)]

However, I DO read all of the posts I can (too many) and I enjoy seeing who gives in, who was right, and sometimes the best friendships evolve from a good online fight.

I'm sure after getting your game to work Larry, and now after reading this your wondering if this is such a good thing to jump into! [:D][:D][:D]

No really though...I'm not trying to insult Todd and I don't mind him disagreeing with me on the game, I offered him to show me in PBEM.

But he is saying how ¨I think I know it all¨ and all this stuff. Sound kinda close to personal attacks against me to make me look stupid and I will fire right back as showed.

But...now that your game is working. Take Japan in scenario 17 and capture PM against just the the A.I. and form your own opinion.

I have read some of the posts above and I do have an opinion, but I have not read enough to form a valid one. My personal opinion on PM is that I had better not lose it or I will have trouble winning the scenario.

You said you are from Argentina. I used to talk to a lot of Hams down there on Amature Radio. Brazil too. You know any Hams down there?

I will go now to scenario #17 and start playing it, but I don't like playing as Japan. Matter of fact, I've never played anything other than Allies. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger said "I'll be back!" [;)]

Ike,

Excuse me, but the LRCAP didn't fly and with the loss of the transports that I couldn't replace and being tired of dealing with your huge doses of ego I did pack in the game.  I've never given up so easily, as any other person I've ever played against will testify to, but I had enough of your bragging about anything you did and and downplaying anything that went wrong for you turn by turn.  A little humility would actually make you a good opponent along with some flexibilty.  If you'd like to discuss this further you've got my email and privacy would be appreciated.  As to calling me a liar and baby again if you need to flame go ahead, but backwater won't offend others.  Enough of this pissing match.

Todd, I'm not in a pissing match with you. I'm not calling you a liar, maybe your CAP didn't show and your supplies dissapeared. Regardless, you still wouldn't have been able to land your force much less keep it supplied.

So now your saying you quit because my ego and not what happened in the game? Ahhh..I see. Is that right?

If that's right, why did you immediatley offer me another game when you quit that one?[&:][&:]

Come on Todd.

And as far as me thinking I know it all and PM is a sure deal for the Allies...look in the war room for these very reputable players comments who AGREE with me and not you.
Apollo11-

IMHO, taking of Port Moresby should never be considered "sure thing" and "done
deal" for Japanese player in scenarios #17 and #19.

Sheer numbers don't mean anything... what counts is actual strategy, tactics
and, of course, luck.

I believe that Port Moresby can be taken and that it can be held.

It all depends on specific situation and every PBEM is another story...

pasternakski-

Whoa. I don't think it's all that cut-and-dried. For one thing, it depends on the scenario. I have to assume that this discussion is about the full campaign scenarios, 17 and 19. In sc. 19, it's probably true, as this is the "maximum Japanese effort in the South Pacific" setting. Still, the odd early disaster to Japanese carrier air supremacy or Allied LBA catching an unprotected transport force can turn things around very quickly.

This is even more true in sc. 17, where the Japanese have only one advantage at the beginning: a shortage of American carrier fighters. If you are crafty enough, and if the gods are willing and your IJN opponent slips up, you can give the Japanese a bloody nose in the "Coral Sea period," where the Japanese are short on everything from ground forces to surface combatants.

If you go to Spooky's UV site you can read the help folder and even Mogami says a real attempt to take PM cannot be taken until the end of July if defended.

Thank you Todd.

Exactly...you offered me a Scenario 19 game in the same email you forfieted our game.

You said you wanted the committments levels turn up because you like a faster paced game.

As you know I like it historical [:D] and at the time I wan't sure about starting a new game with you when you had just quit the previous game after one setback.

Case closed.
