Is there any way to have both these counter symbols and a set of NATO symbols in the editor at the same time so one could assign the German ones to German units and the standard symbols to Allied ones?

By putting the German counters in a scenario-specific folder in the Graphics folder. That method overrules/replaces the standard icons used.

Thanks Silvanksi

But how would I make it so just the "new" icons display just for player one's units, while player two's units keep the original icons.

I suppose making these "new" icons replace icons I am not likely to use in a scenario would work then re-assign the symbols in the editor. If I did this, I should be careful though because some icons have special abilities tied to them right? For example the ski and airborne units...are there more?

I prefer the flag-size indicator on the left as well. Is not that more accurate?

Look which colors are used by the German force, and replace those... usually grey and black counters but it varies per scenario of course.

I don't think you can mix and match the sizes, though.

The modded counters will need to be on the same unit type on the unit BMP, and the size symbols on the numbers.bmp... that will work right?

awesome!!!!

Is there any way to have both these counter symbols and a set of NATO symbols in the editor at the same time so one could assign the German ones to German units and the standard symbols to Allied ones?

Also, is there a cheat sheet available somewhere (I am only partially familiar with these symbols but would love to learn them)?

Lastly, did the Germans use these symbols to represent division and corps sized units?

Thanks, again nice work!!!

I don't intend to do ALL the countersheets with these symbols, only the most commonly used by the germans, like all the grey ones, or black ones. And yes, my idea was to have german symbols for germans only, no point using them for allied units as well (like they did in The Longest Day boardgame, complete nonsense)

A complete manual will be provided with explainations on symbols and how to use them

The major trouble I'm having is with size indicators. These symbols were used for units from platoon to division mostly, not for Korps and higher. Still looking into the best solution atm.

Yes, this mod will require both a modded countersheet and a modded numbers.bmp file for size, but that's not a problem. Telu is right though, the flag size-indicators are generally in the middle, I put them on the left for practical resons (turns out quite good actually, but I'm still working on it, nothing's fixed for now)

Too bad you can't get the number/type of vehicles/guns etc on the counter. I think the Germans did that so they would know what the unit was capable of. Guess we just have to do the unit info key. Thanks looks great.

Yes, some ccompromises will have to be made. TOAW counters are only 31x31 pixels so you don't have much room to do what you'd like [:D]

Anybody knows what determines the sound a unit makes when it moves? is it the counter icon or its main equipment?

Here's the almost complete set of icons, still need to do the airborne and glider troops, can't seem to find the symbols the germans were suing for those. I think I'll keep the size flags on the left, works OK so far.

Wow, just had a flash back to Avalon Hill's "The Longest Day" which used the german symbology. Was that one monster of a monster game?!

That looks very good! I like the size flag on the left, looks better than in the middle, no matter if it would be a bit ahistorical.
Regarding airborne troops i have found this:

And this, but nothing on airborne artillery, anti-tank, gliders and such:

I think for the Fallschirmjager units I'll use the normal infantry icon coupled with the little parachute symbol.

They have Tessin's "Verbände und Truppen der deutschen Wehrmacht und Waffen-SS im Zweiten Weltkrieg 1939 – 1945" at the university bibliotheque here in Tübingen. I can have a look tomorrow (can't promise, otherwise on monday) at the volume with the "Taktische Zeichen und Gliederungen" (or so) and send you something or post it here.

Thanks mate, try to look for the symbol for glider in particular, I have absolutely no idea what they look like. I'm using this book but it doesn't have anything on luftwaffe units:

I just remembered I have a couple of thick books on the german OOB during WW2 with taktische zeichen and all, gonna try to dig'em out. Also, I've tried to do the icons for airborne troops, they might not be 100% historical but looks ok:

Thanks for the link Cap'n, I'm using Niehorster's pages a lot already, but he doesn't have anything on Fallschirm units.

Bad news, Boonie. Tessin's book has no symbols for Fallschirm and glider units. [:(]
They had their own symbols, but they were abolished in 43 for unification purposes (mentioned in the book) and Tessin's book has no Luftwaffe symbols that date pre 43. (The only thing i found was that Luftwaffe Feld divisions and the Hermann Göring division were marked with a L, respectively HG on the right side of the symbol.)
Looks like you'll have to look for pre 43 Luftwaffe symbols.

I have seen that there are several empty icons still, if you tell me which you would need i can look again at the start of the next week. I've seen symbols for railroad artillery, armoured trains and reserve/Ersatz units.

Is this correct: the unit size flags would not be able to be used at the same time as the NATO symbol size.

If this is the case can we get a shot of what these German graphics would look like with say Division or Corps symbols?

Thanks.

Again, nice effort many thanks!
