In the game Shortland can be a problem as the Japanese get it to rather large size, which makes it tougher to hit Rabaul unless you rid of it first. Not sure what human players do with it though.

In one of my games, my opponent has elected to not increase GC and increase Shortland. That may prove to be a great move.
With a size one airfield on GC, the Allies can not use it right away for another other than CAP. While Shortland and Rabaul can work together to bomb the crap out of GC and naval attack.
I think Shortland maybe very important. Will tell you in a few months.

If BOB ever goes beyond 30 days you will learn this[:D]
[:'(]
No HQs in danger (yet) in BOB...
But another thing in evacuating units - your opponent does NOT get points for destroyed units if you get them out first.
Unfortunately, the game always pulls your BEST units out first, so evacuating people from someplace under siege is a pain, so it is best sometimes to evac an entire unit that has been beat up since you can't just evacuate casualties.

Hope you are not doing it in our game Historiker [X(] I don't mind evacuating pieces of units but do it by APs and AKs, using subs for this is totally ridiculous and gamey

Well it was done IRL by both sides... so it is not so ridiculous. As for being gamey, the only thing that bothered me is that Dutch and Philipino reinforcement continue to be available once DEI and PI are under Japanese control, so evacuating any of these units is gamey for me (or you turn replacement off). No problems with UK/US units.

Just like recon teams were sent by subs in WW2 but I also find this kind of practice gamey in WITP. I know it's easier to sacrifice few soldiers instead of sending recon aircrafts for weeks (which will btw alert your enemy) but let's not make a rule out of few exceptions.
The idea of taking 3 officers from a brigade, loading them on subs so they can teach brigade's spirit to new recruits and thanks to those lectures rebuilt brigade comes back with experience 85 is ridiculous but that's game's mechanics.
So in my games, if you want to save a unit, please pay the price of sailing through my air zones.

They dont. As you draw replacements the experience drops. The more replacements you draw, the lower the experience will drop.

Right - this was fixed a while back. Interestingly, everyone agreed at the time that if it was fixed, they wouldn't really have much objection about the practice.
Since it was fixed, though, people gripe about just as much (it seems), even after the "fix" is pointed out.

I am not sure that I would totally agree that it is gamey.
1. The monthly build rate for DEI and Philly troops is so low that it is silly.
2. The ENG for those theaters units also suck up the INF. Leaving less for the Assualt units.
3. The XP for those new INF units is so bad they are basically worthless anyways.
The game has built in some mechanics that really limit the effectiveness of the DEI or Philly assualt units having any value, even if you pull them out.

Good points guys. I didn't know unit's experience decreases when obtaining replacements.

Oh, as for your air zones: A single ship can often do it. I had one AP in a CHS game recently make 3 trips between Bataan and China off loading troops before it was finally sent to Pearl Harbor (and yes, it made it - just south of Formosa, through Iwo Jima, past the KB and around the north side of Midway). I had 3 others that made 2 trips each.

I'm not saying that's I would sink every ship (though I would love to).
I'm simply limited in my capabilities to sink ANY sub leaving Malaya. With AKs, APs I have my chances.
It doesn't matter anyway because KPAX convinced me that there's nothing wrong in sub evac.
