My understanding was that the CAF was created by a group of southerners (who were all considered Colonels) and the name was chosen because it was irreverent, like "Swiss Navy". It was meant to be some what tongue in cheak. I don't think they ever thought anyone would take them as a serious coment on the Civil war. Which just goes to show that PC people have no sense of humor. (And therefore , not much of a life). [:D]

Being a Yankee I was never fond of the name Confederate Air Force -
1) The Confederates didnt have an Air Force. Let alone one flying WW2 aircraft - wrong time period...you want to name a reenactment group for the Confederacy, then I have no problem, but make it historically appropriate to the Civil War time period.
2) HEY YOU LOST THE WAR! WE YANKEES WON...LIFE SUCKS (I'm a Jet Fan please I know about losing -many more losing seasons then winning seasons)

Correct on all counts, but some of us are of an age to remember the origins of the CAF...[8|]......[;)]

I don't think Wild Bill was carrier certified. "Certified" for sure but not carrier certified. [:D]
Wild Bill could land a plane anywhere...and often did. [:D]

Confederate AF -
Please read their history before making some assumptions on why they named themselves "The Confederate Air Force". Frankly, I never knew why the called themselves that, but frankly I didn't care why they named themselves that either. I also accepted it as bowing to the PC police for changing their name (which I also accpet as "prudent" given the fact that they are driven by donations, it does reflect the prevelant (PC) attitude.
But I did find it interesting that they were founded at "Rebel Air Field" in Texas. So it makes perfect sense that the Confederate Air Force would be based at Rebel Field (I actually think it's quite clever). But don't make critisize their choice of name before asking why first.
All that being said, given the fact that:
Regardless of whether -I- might think that it is sheer ignorance when someone finds any reference to the Confederacy offensive - it doesn't change the fact that the CAF is dependent upon donations from across the country and across the globe. And at present, there are many more potential donators who are willing to give $100 towards the upkeep a B-17 if their name is Commemorative Air Force; but $0 if their name is Confederate Air Force.
So I've got to side with those that "caved to the PC police", and happily take the money. Otherwise, I'm guessing there would be far fewer classics available for all us to enjoy.
