3D isometric view?
I much prefer the standard view of Steel Panthers. I don't think 3D anything will add anything to the game, except take up additional time in trying to create 3D models. And often, the 3D models don't look as nice, and they will up the game requirement.

The 3D views of Campaign Series and Squad Battles aren't really 3D, they're just 2D sprites that look 3D-ish...

I'm not so sure!
I really liked the isometric view display in the old campaign series, and with a "top down" view opition if the player prefers, it would cater to both new and old school SP players. IMO, isometric isn't realy "3D" as such ... is it that much of a drain on systems?
It would also add some of the "eye candy" factor to draw new players that are put off by the old school board-game style of SP.
However, I can see it being a lot of extra work to put in the game. [:(]

Really, I think that the intricacies of the SPWaW combat model preclude any attempt to render it in 3D or even pseudo 3D. It's not needed. The top-down view is fine. This is NOT an eye-candy game. The eye-candy is provided by the encyclopedia pictures. This game is about tactics, nothing more, nothing less.

I could go for isometric like HPS games do it. Plus the infantry in SPWAW are hard to see and make out the way they are all bunched up and the color of the terrain. That was my 2nd biggest gripe about SPWAW, the first of course is as with all games the AI is never intelligent enough. (I bet you thought my first gripe would be price or buggy ctd flawed out of the box issues, well those are pet peaves not 1sies and 2sies lol).

I thought that the Enhanced did a pretty good job with the infantry issue.

You mean the thing Shrapnel put out or have I missed a version somewhere? Shrapnel's version wasn't any better on my eyes than the origional.

Enhanced was built by myself, Alby and many others, both here and at the SPWAW Depot. It includes new graphics (including updated infantry and vehicle icons, as well as terrain), sounds, encyclopaedia and picture entries, and updated and reworked OOBs. Many unit errors have been corrected, new formations added, and the OOBs in general have been "scrubbed" to comply with the game's data parameters (many of which had been ignored by previous OOB teams due to ignorance of the game code). We expanded many of the "minor" nations such as Netherlands, Philippines, Belgium, Greece and Czechoslovakia. The Dominion nations (UK, Canada, India, ANZAC) saw vast revisions of their units and formations. The US and USMC have been brought as close to the wartime TO&Es as is possible in the game structure. The DV (Decisive Version) set of OOBs makes extensive use of "native" language names for units, while the DVRN (Decisive Version Regular Name) is mainly English with a sprinkling of "native" names for flavour. The Experience and Morale ratings were bumped up to a more reasonable framework, allowing the use of "minor" nations that don't "break and run" at the first sign of combat. A few other changes were made to the
mech.exe, including the removal of "casualty reports" for out-of-LOS enemy units (mostly during artillery barrages).
