"The Forgotten War"...your description fits my dim memory exactly. Surprised it hasn't shown up in the bargain bin like "Victory at Sea"

Turns out we were both wrong about the title but you were close. It was "The Unknown War". (It was released in the Soviet Union as "The Great Patriotic War". No surprise there.) Here's a link: http://unknown-war.com/

I believe "The Forgotten War" was a series about The Korean War.
