What are values based on? What was he known for?: short background here... With Bill Busch as pilot, Jack Setzekorn was flying as gunner on a photo-recon? mission. Returning to the carrier, they crash landed in a ball of flame into the hanger deck. About an hour after the landing, the Capt came to sick bay to see the men. The commendation was oral, not written, but upon telling, was consistent for 50 years.

While the men stood at attention in underwear and bandages, with eyes forward, the Captain informed them " By refusing a wave-off and crashing into the hanger deck, you two idiots did what the entire Japanese Navy and the entire Japanese Air Force could not do - put this carrier out of commission for three days. You have destroyed 7 planes and caused over a million dollars in damage to this ship. You two are Japanese Aces."

At this point, Setze would pause, take a drink of Crown Royal and water, and as an aside, say that he and Busch had met with the Captain several times - and he thought that, relatively speaking, things were not going too bad at that point. But the Capt had stopped speaking, and Busch said "Well, my Father will pay for it."
For a few minutes, Setze said, he thought the Capt was really going to have them sewn into a bag with a 5' shell and tossed overboard.

He said on Sept 2 1945, they were outside Tokyo Bay - starting at 1 hour before sunrise, sitting in the cockpit of their fighters until after the surrender was signed.

Background: Cadet Lay's solo flight crash lands in cornfield in CA. Inquiry faults carburetor. Redo of solo scheduled after move to HI. A ruptured appendix and then Pearl Harbor interrupts. Army discovers a need for ferry pilots. Later transferred to Jimmy Stewart’s (the famous actor) squadron with 8th AAF. Assigned clerical duties and checking aborted bombers for mechanical problems by flying to Scotland and back.

Famous for ferrying candy and smokes to Aberdeen and Scotch back to England on mechanical tests. Volunteered to pilot one real raid (for a combat ribbon) on a supposed milk run to Pad du Calais just over the coast and unexpectedly met a renowned JG. Saved from emergency infantry replacement duty by Hap Arnold who kept all pre-war volunteers out of infantry replacement pool. Participated (clerk) in debrief of pilots on both sides (including after the war) remembered with great interest stories of the fo-fighters. Assigned to first USAAF jet unit as Sgt. Typed up his own discharge papers and left the USAAF the day enlistments were frozen by presidential order at the beginning of the Korean Conflict. Some of his friends were overrun in Korea.

They don't make men like my father any more in the free world. Maybe the Aussies still do? God I hope someone does. It won't be to long before the grim reaper seeks another blood sacrifice at the alter of freedom. I'd feel better about it all if the greatest generation were not leaving us.

Clive Robertson Caldwell, DSO, DFC and Bar (28 July 1910–5 August 1994) was the leading Australian air ace of World War II. He is officially credited with shooting down 28.5 enemy aircraft, in over 300 operational sorties. In addition to his official score, he has been ascribed three shared victories, six probables and 15 damaged.[1][2] Caldwell flew Curtiss P-40 Tomahawks and Kittyhawks in the North African Campaign and Supermarine Spitfires in the South West Pacific Theatre. He was the highest-scoring P-40 pilot from any air force and the highest-scoring Allied pilot in North Africa.[3][4]...
On 23 November [1941], Caldwell shot down an Experte, Hauptmann Wolfgang Lippert, commander of Staffel II./JG 27, who bailed out uninjured. For this action he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.[13] Caldwell claimed five Junkers Ju 87 (Stuka) dive bombers in a matter of minutes on 5 December.

On the evening of 19 January 1943 Crombie intercepted a formation of four Japanese bombers near Calcutta. Enemy fire set his Beaufighter's starboard motor ablaze, but he persisted with the attack and shot down one plane. When flames from the burning motor swept back, he ordered his navigator to parachute to safety and pressed on alone. Crombie destroyed a second bomber and damaged a third, then his fuel tank exploded and he was forced to bale out with his clothing alight. His typically modest and laconic account of the combat in a letter to his wife made no mention of his success, merely relating that he had been shot down and had 'landed in the most God awful swamp'. For his courage and determination in this 'magnificent lone-hand action', he won the Distinguished Service Order; a Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded in May, recognized the leadership and fighting spirit which he had displayed in earlier engagements. At the end of his operational tour he had been credited with the destruction of twelve enemy aircraft and probably an additional four.

Fate IRL:
Repatriated on 27 September 1943, Crombie was promoted temporary flight lieutenant in October and acting squadron leader in November. He was posted in December to No.5 Operational Training Unit, based at Tocumwal, New South Wales. During a test flight on 26 August 1945 he was killed when his Beaufighter crashed at Williamtown.

This pilot is probably pilot number 4498 but if so he is in the wrong unit.

I am still preparing an excel file with 383 dutch pilots (MLD/MLKNIL)

This file contains every MLD/MLKNIL pilot who saw action in the Pacifc War.
Two pilots Flight Officers G.J. Ahrends and B.H. Klaassens flew with the Vk.A.3, but i couldn't figure out in which flight.
Since Vk.A.3 operated only in flights during the Java campaign, these pilots are left out of the list.

What are values based on? What was he known for?:
Andy is my father in law.  He passed June 3, 2006.  He was on his way to Australia when the war ended.  He was a B-25 pilot.  I do not know if he was going to a unit, deploying with a unit or going to a pool.  He remained in the air force after the war and rose to the rank of Lt Col.  Shortly before Vietnam, his eyesight deteriorated enough to keep him from flying.  He then worked and maintained ELINT equipment till his retirement.  After he retired, he became a high school math teacher.  I met and married my wife late in life and did not get to meet him till a couple years before he died.  His mental faculties were deteriorating be the time I met him and I did not get to see him at his best.
