I recall being very upset with the first edition of TAOW when the Japanese invasion fleet sailed right THROUGH a peninsula in order to land in Lingayen Gulf!

I have. I enjoy it some times, but it's not really a war game. It's more of a game of politics and economics with some warfare added in.

The Close Combat series should definately be on the list. Although somewhat aged it has more than decent graphics for the job, a great and active community/modder scene, simply put big fun. The AI is of course not very challenging, but there are means to play online against a human opponent, single battles and whole campaigns (babysitting your battle groups and such).
Oh, btw it is not turn based and you may suffer from adrenaline rushes trying to fgure out from where your troops came under fire. Great game really. [8D]

HPS Simulations are the makers of Aide de Camp which came out in the early '90s. You were able to create your own counters and maps and put board games on the computer. No AI or any thing, but was set up fro PBEM. Since then, they have recreated a number of board games for computer....AI included.
The Panzer Campaign series has created a number of board games I grew up with such as:
The Longest Day and
Hell's Highway

Thanks for the heads up Mistmatz and Charbroiled. Will check those out also. Though I would consider close combat to be more of a tactical game. Havnt played that one for years [:D]
