Edited - maker as SPi.  My brother and I played it in HS.  We set it up in my basement a fe years ago before my ex and I separated.  Got to Feb 42 before calling it.  Just a time commitment thing.   One thing I liked about ti was the players could control Air-To-Surface combat and Surface-To-Surface combat directly

the 3 T's To Long......TO much.......To Complex. I can remembergoing to the game convention in Ann Harbor Mich. in 77 and watching a group of guys set up the thing and play the first few turns. If I had bought it then and left it unplayed I could have sold it for a bunch. I thought at the time that there is a limit to what the human brain can deal with and the game pushed it a bit for me. I also found the maps to be a bit bland and to much info on them.

At one time I had two copies. Sadly, I now have none after some hurried moves and some water leakage problems years ago. I and my friend George played about 18 months into the war before I moved away. We had played about 90 full and about 120 partial games of War in Europe also by SPI. That was a long time ago. I think I was a lot younger then.
I knew one guy who mounted the map on a sheet metal and actually bought enough of those magnetic unit clips to set them up on the map. Playing that game was his hobby but to me it had almost 0 for single player. I think he had a guy from his company he owned that played with him. He had a qhole room in his big house that he called "The War Room" and it was very impresive to see that wall mounted map and all them production sheets laid out under clear plexaglass.

USN was a S&T magazine game. David and I played that game for a couple of years wearing out 3 different maps. Got me on my way to all things War in the Pacific.

I think that they're talking about SPI. Wasn't their monster named USN?
With Who? finding 2 guys that would be willing to play that monster would be almost impossible LOL

In 1985 Halsey and I (along with Mike Scholl and perhaps one or two others here) participated in a nine-day double blind moderated WitP marathon in Richmond VA. We had the entire floor of some old downtown hotel to ourselves, and there were two games going. Each game had three complete boards set up, one in a common room for the mods, and one each for the Allied and IJ teams in private rooms. Our game had a two-player IJ team going against the 6-7 man Allied team. Playing nearly around the clock and making weekly turns we got to 6/44. That was great fun.

Well, what was the status of each side at the end?

They organized the event. Halsey and I weren't actual members but managed to wrangle invites somehow or other, can't really remember some of the details after 23(!) years.

I do remember that in 9 nights I got a total of 25 hours sleep. Livin' on coffee and Vivarin....

I'd say our game ended with both sides feeling they had won. Since we didn't get to the end of the war, there is no way to say. In 6/44 the Allies had just taken Rota and had invaded Timor. Given that we had lost 4 US CVs by 2/42 (no respawning![;)]), we were feeling pretty good that we didn't just quit the first day!

Both sides felt victorious, can't ask for much more than that. That was a fun week.
